Kostas Manolas

Wasn't he the defender Wenger was after before he moved to Roma?

Ok I have watched Manolas for many years. More or less people are spot on, he is strong, fast and a bit crazy. I have been impressed by his evolution because I was always rating Papastathopoulos (the Dortmund defender) as a better cb but not so suitable for pl because he is not that strong. Also, at least in the past, he was a massive cnut, dont know if he still is, and in his first years at AEK I remembered that he seemed to get booked alot. IMO, he is definitely an upgrade to Blind but that doesnt say alot for me. I do think also that he is more experienced and more complete, at least for the next 2 years, than Stones for example. At Roma he had the task to replace Benatia and I dont think he has failed at all. IRC Arsenal were linked to him even before the transfer to Roma.

“Manchester United? I know nothing, my agent tells me nothing,” the 24-year-old told Sky in Italy.

“I have to be focused on Roma, I still have three years on my contract.
“After the end of the season we will look at things together with Roma.”

Good big solid no thrills defender. Personally (bar the last month or so) I think Smalling has finally showed his quality this season. What we really need in my opinion is a quality ball playing defender like danny Blind, but a Danny Blind that can actually run, defend crosses, flick ons and defend his box. The obvious choices are Marquinhos, Varane and Stones who all seem a bit over hyped for me but all of which have enormous potential

United meet the entourage of Manolas. Ready 40 million euros.

Di Marzio on the case, probably means it got some legs

Anyone ever seen him? I have never seen him but I will start unzipping to a few youtube vids.

Smalling and Manolas wil be a very fast & strong pairing, would be good business I think

I would rather have him than Stones. Good defender, but there is a problem, he usually plays as a RCB. I believe we need to keep Smalling on the RCB and buy a defender who is comfortable more to the left side.
For CBs it's not the major issue of course some players can change from RCB to LCB, but still it's something to consider.

Sounds a bit too brawl and not brain. It could basically result in a physical wall having he and Smalling at the back, but I think we need somebody with a bit more poise to their game.

Maybe he is not impressed by Smalling and will buy a LCB as well. Jones could be on his way, Rojo might be on his way. Who knows what the one who cannot be named is thinking.

I hope we buy 2 CBs. Get rid of Rojo and Jones

Manolas
Smalling
?
Blind/Mensa

People in this thread seems to think he's in the mould of Jones. What I would like, personally, to see with regards to getting a new CB, is having someone more in the Blind, but being an "actual" defender, as well. Smalling does not carry the ball out of the back too well, and we need a new Rio.

Stones, Marquinhos or Varane seem to fit this mold, wouldn't you agree? They are more exciting prospects than this player, whom I to be honest don't know anything about. Exciting doesn't necessarily mean better, though!

EDIT: And yes, rid of Jones and Rojo. I fancied Rojo during his first season, but he has been shocking after his injury.

May be. But i believe our focus should be bring in LCB, a partner for Samlling.
I don;t think Rojo and Jones factor in much, if we sell them, surely we need to sign someone who is comfortable being a cover, not a Manolas or Stones.

If it's for the purpose of cover, there isn't much point. The only reason to sign two CBs would be to replace Smalling too, which would be silly unless we can guarantee a better player.

I agree...I just didn't want to upset any Smalling fans by suggesting he gets knocked out the team.

If it was up to me I would go for Manolas and Varane or Marquinhos (apparently wants to leave). They can be the first choice pairing and Smalling can try to break into it. With injuries I think there will be game time for all 3. Blind can be a last resort.

If Smalling's passing is as poor as it is with his right foot, I don't even want to imagine him being pressed with the ball on his left foot. We'd lead the league in losing possession in our own half.

If it's true and he's a Jose signing then I see this guy being our John Terry, except Manolas has some pace about him. He's also a good age, i'm not against signing him at all. Smalling and Manolas may not be the most ball-playing of partnerships, but it's big and strong and pacy.

I don't and if smb does i wonder how exactly he is similar to Jones. i don't see any similarities.
Manolas is a more of your typical CB, he does not rush into challenges and so on.

Well Manolas is certainly not that. But i think we need to bin this concept entirely. We need midfielders to organize our play.

ED we also need normal full back, not darmians or rojos. If Shaw is ok and fit great, get the god RB and we will have to problem getting the ball from defence.

Yes, i agree if Manolas and Smalling will be our new pairing i would expect Manolas to be changing the side rather than Smalling.
