No chance I can include Phillips in that these days. It’s been 3 years since he was an impact player.
The point is Phillips and Rice at the ONLY ones with the skill set. Yet Phillips hardly plays at club level so isn't match fit when in the squad. Now jusfast Imagine a scenario Rice gets injured and out of practice Phillps plays and gets suspended as a result. England would be beyond being down to bare bones in the role.

A reason why If a Mainoo for example develops steadily over the next half season. I'd wager he has a huge chance of making the Euros ahead of even a more experienced Angel Gomes.

Foden isn't a natural in deep areas and doesn't have the defensive nous for that, he's an attacker. Mainoo is good defensively, physically strong, but his press resistance and intelligence of how to play in deep areas to open up and receive a pass, keep the play ticking along/progress the ball is not something that any England midfielder has had since Scholes.

England have Curtis Jones, Rico Lewis, Lewis Miley, Alex Scott, who have some of these chareteristics, Mainoo will eventually be an England regular but don’t think will be this summer, England are producing more midfielders of his ilk, I can’t think of a teenager has accomplished as him at this moment but there are a couple at an older age and ages below.

Eventually in next couple years I see him being a mainstay in and around the England first team, don’t think Southgate will take the risk of taking him to Euros though, will be out of him Alex Scott Rico Lewis and Gomes and Jones I feel for next midfielders to step up and I think he’d go with the players who have played u21 football first and foremost, unless Mainoo has a Fabregas Wilshere like impact from now till the end of the season.

None of them are the same profile as Mainoo at all, not saying I believe he'll make the squad but he's different to those players you mentioned.

Yes more of a defensive midfielder, the rest are 8’s but they for example Rico Lewis and Jones could play as a roaming 6.

I think Lewis will get the nod beccause he’s been through the system and played under Pep, I rate Mainoo has having more potential though but that will be for the next World Cup I think.

Beyond? Modric won a Ballon d’Or, you mean Mainoo has higher potential than that even? :)
Getting a bit ahead of ourselves. Modric peak level was on another planet. His offensive awareness much better. Also different type of players.

To be fair it won't do Mainoo any harm missing out on the Euros, United players are always the first to be scapegoated when something inevitably goes wrong for the National team.

It wasn’t really discussed but I’m sure he was blocked off for the Villa 2nd goal.

Yeah agree with this

Great to see one of our midfielders that actually values possession and can play the simple game really well and looks physically equipped at a young age to cope with the Premier League.
If I have reservations about him it may be that he does not look that quick which can be exposed in England more than any other league but he looks like he has really good positional sense so it may not be an issue.

He won't be going to the Euros.

Don't think he didn't anything with the ball yesterday. But he did the Fred role of breaking up well, and won 7 or 8 headers which is bizarre and incredible?
But we know what he can do with the ball so it was really refreshing to see him showcasing other aspects of his game. Looks to be a real gem.

There aren't two or three games a week though.

If a teenager is to be introduced the second half of this season is perfect.
We're on one game a week until the end of the season, he should be fine.
Not sure how common it is for youngsters to show those physical leaps during an active campaign as opposed to over the summer and pre-season where there's usually those 'spurts' that see them come back levelled up (truth being that 3 months+ is a massive chunk of developmental time).

Currently, we have Hojlund, Garnacho and Mainoo in this bracket who can't handle a full, high octane match in the adult game yet - by May, we'll see if that's still the case and how each of them gets on in terms of recovery for a concerted level output in subsequent games. The run-in, in particular, with its upped intensity, will showcase where each one of them are at come May.

Hopefully, injuries are few and far between and we get to revisit this after seeing the organic process. I doubt any of the three them starts every game between now and then, which should also be helpful.

For the life of me I can't understand why we make those short passes to the guy right in front of the goalkeeper, the player almost always looks under massive pressure, and it often ends up back with the goalkeeper, it seems very high risk for minimal gain.

It's to move opponent players around and open up other lanes to pass the ball.

Nothing to do with his performances, which have been excellent if not astonishing, but it appears the correct pronunciation of his name is MAN-OO, not MAY-NOO.

And definutely not MAN-YOO!

None of those players are being tasked with being the first receiver from CB's to the midfield into open play, and especially not as a single pivot essentially depended upon to initialise and dictate those primary actions. We have a manager who is madcap enough to not only deploy Mainoo there from the outset, but also provide him with the least amount of support for the role, which means we get to see an extensive showcasing of what he's about and how he thinks and adapts to the problems at hand. As things currently stand, the majority of the players you've listed would be played in a supporting role in the same midfield as Mainoo - not challenging him for his spot - expected to progress the ball after he's given it to them.

He's being compared to FDJ so often because it's such an infrequent occurrence for one central midfielder to be asked to do so much from deep to get the team going. It's also why it's so difficult to scour the market and get anything close to like for likes on FDJ.

For me, ultimately Mainoo is an #8 and in direct competition with the players you've mentioned (sans Rico), but his obvious USP is that he's been brought into the team as a driving #6 with the burden of progressing a whole team forward by the very nature of what we (the fans) have said is suicidal, isolative system where an 18-year old is being given so much responsibility and trust that it actually beggars belief and is testament to what ten Hag thinks of him (absolute trust and belief he can do that job). It's also not just on the ball that Mainoo has a niche, it's off it in intrinsically knowing where to stand, what to do to be contingent and superfluous; it's not just get the ball and drive, drive, drive. Mainoo selects his actions so soundly and seamlessly that he looks like he's been playing the role for years and not just 5 games at the level.

I'd expect there to be growth rather than decline or levelling out as this season progresses and for Mainoo to be seen as an undeniable asset for what he brings to the table and the tactical flexibility he contributes to by being so adept in two roles and the way he understands what he should do when nominally a #6 to how he approaches the game when nominally an #8.

He shouldn’t play the lone pivot. This 433 isn’t working, back to 4231.

I think he was physically getting dominated, I don't really mind the sub instead of just letting him get battered by Yates and Gibbs-white.

Thought he was fine. Everything in front of him was shambolic.

Could have used his discipline in the second.

He was getting bullied physically. But that could have been predicted before the game.

No real need to change it.

He was really quiet for all the rage, 10/12 passes. 18, missed a lot of the season, busy schedule.
Yep he was pretty quiet the whole half so I’m not going to blame EtH for trying something different.

For all the hate, McT had much better numbers in terms of passing and tackles won

This is why I said we need to make the change at HT, he was being swamped all game and barely had any effect.
We should have gone to a 4-2-3-1 and got someone to help him not put in a wanderer who can't sniff danger at critical moments.

He was getting over run first half. Needed help, not taken off. The problem was, there was no one to put on to help him..

As toothless as we were in the first half, we lost control completely after the change. He would have been much more likely to sniff out the danger for their two goals. Ridiculous how much space they had to pick their spot.

A little like Michael Carrick in that sense.

Taken off at half time because he played three games in a short space of time and was lacking energy the reason given. The problem he was replaced by a chap with zero positional sense or defensive understanding

That's great but we conceded two goals when he was on the pitch in areas where a competent dm might well have been stood.

Anybody who has watch mct knows he is a piss poor dm, and anybody who has watched United this season knows the single pivot has been a disaster

The answer was to offer mainoo more support bot replace him with mct
