Different level of intensity for him today, hell learn from it, but still was better than many others.
He looked a bit off the pace today physically but it's his first week of first team football with 3 tough away days after a lengthy lay off and no pre-season so he's bound to be a bit leggy. I reckon he'll be fine, he just met a very physical and hardworking unit today that I'm sure he'll learn from.Tough game for him next to McTominay. I must say, I’m a little concerned how slow he looked. He might be the slowest player in the squad and I fear that’s going to hold him back.
He was fine (at least from what I saw, minus a few minutes after 2nd half kick-off ). You could have stuck any 'top young midfielder' darling of the Tifo class in there, whether Gavi or the PSG kid or Newcastle's Miley, and they wouldn't have done much better, all else being the same.Missed the game tonight, which sounds like it may have been a blessing. How did Kobbie get on?
Ok, thanks for that.He was fine (at least from what I saw, minus a few minutes after 2nd half kick-off ). Yes. It looked like he was running in sand. I am hoping its just heavy legs after what must have been an exhausting week, and coming back from a rather long injury, but feck me he looked glacial today.Tough game for him next to McTominay. I must say, I’m a little concerned how slow he looked. He might be the slowest player in the squad and I fear that’s going to hold him back.
Yup he looks even slower than Eriksen.Tough game for him next to McTominay. I must say, I’m a little concerned how slow he looked. He might be the slowest player in the squad and I fear that’s going to hold him back.
Glad to see these comments highlighting both that he was hung out to dry by the manager and awareness that you cannot do it alone, unless you're some kind of superhero midfielder in the mould of Robbo, Matthaeus and the like.
This is the point in the season where ten Hag's bumbling and stubbornness becomes a real concern because it is negligent to put a youngster into the hardest area of the pitch and literally not facilitate him. There'll be no time at all to be supporting a coach when a sole midfielder who is a gem of a player is given no partner when it's one of our own. I do wish to sound precious because it's a different kettle of fish to one of his failed signings. This kid is one of few breaths of fresh air to come out of this season no matter what happens and he needs to be nurtured and protected as such.
Newcastle have the most aggressive and athletic midfield in the league and I had serious concerns about how we were going to handle that before the game kicked off. Turns out, we weren't going to handle it at all, instead having them run amok and tearing us to smithereens leaving Kobbie with far too much work to do. Even in a 50-50 contest with out best midfield, set up properly, there's no assurances we could win that battle, so to have the shambles we did was setting the kid up to fail. His game revolves around passing and moving and recycling the ball and he had nobody to do that with and Joelinton and Bruno G thundering around like a rabid pairing backed up by anyone else in the vicinity. Howe recognised the foibles of our pathetic midfield setup and absolutely nailed it, and the manager made no adjustments to that leaving Mainoo in quicksand. It's not good. Not good at all and that cannot be allowed to happen throughout these upcoming games. Bayern and Liverpool will do the exact same and again, Kobbie runs the risk of being an island.
We had players being hung out to dry by others on the pitch across the team: AWB by Rashford; Garnacho by Dalot, but worst of all was Kobbie, and that's saying something after the 1/10 performance from Rashford that left AWB all out at sea. Those meme-worthy position maps that are going around showing the massive gap between the deep midfielder and everyone else on the other side of the ball tell the story. It's an absolute joke and it needs to end or the sack must come sooner rather than later. I don't know which part of this is Dutch or Ajax, because a primary tenet of both schools of football is the connective tissue through the spine of the team and particularly the midfield. ten Hag should know better than practically any coach of any nationality bar Spanish, the importance of the midfield being able to link up with one another. I hope this is the final nail in the coffin of abandoning the #6 for him, even more so because it's an 18-yr old with not even a handful of games under his belt he's now leaving up shit's creek.

I've said it time and time again that a)he isn't out savior and b)he's not quite ready yet to be a starter, and here we are.
Newcastle played through Unitedss Midfield like a hot knife through butter, easy and did it time and time again.
He isn't ready quite simply and paired with McT it just isn't going to work.
An absolute fantastic player and will be amazing or sure next season, but this season is to soon for him.
He's been good but not the saviour thst ETH's cult said he'd be.
Mainoo needs midfield players to pass the ball to (and receive passes from), as well as to share defensive burden with. But he has McTominay insteadHe's been good but not the saviour thst ETH's cult said he'd be. Not even Mainoo can save this awful system.

I like McT and he definitely has his uses, but playing him alongside Mainoo is almost suicidal.I think Mctominay is a bigger issue then Mainoo.
