Back to training, LVG is a big fan, we could be waiting for him after all.

Would you take the risk?

Yes, he will eventually recover in a few months and would be a big strengthening.

His still a long way away from full fitness so most likely next summer.

Even if we get Vidal this summer, I'd love to see Strootman come in January. Feck me, what a midfield we would have.

Despite not seeing him play much for PSV, I'm ashamed to say I was firmly in the 'he's not good enough for United' camp. Last season at Roma (and I caught him a few times for Holland where he played well), he convinced me that he's a great talent. Would fit in here brilliantly.

Didn't realize he's already training again, in which case I could see Van Gaal buying him before the end the window.

In my opinion he's Carrick's replacement

Would Roma sell in January if they're still in the Champions League.

By the looks of it, Roma are building a seriously good team, could be difficult to land him if Roma are doing well.

We should have got him last summer, why on earth we didn't i don't know. 8m euros i think he went for.

€18m and most people on here didn't rate him back then from what I remember. Hindsight is a beautiful thing but very few predicted he'd come this good at Roma.

I appear to have pulled that figure out of my arse then, apologies.

I rated him, and i think a fair few others said we'd live to regret not signing him. I was in the newbs at the time.

Roma are stocked in midfield though, they could sell Strootman and they'd still have Pjanic, Naingollan and De Rossi as well as newly acquired Keita. The impact of this transfer wouldn't be that severe and if we gave them €35m - €40m they'd have made a 100% profit that could be spent on players in different areas. They have a very good team over there, probably needing a striker to complete it.

Strootman wont be ready until November so January we could make a move for him if we dont get anyone else in the mean time.

Roma have spent 37m euros so far and sold 5m euros worth of players. Still makes me wonder if we've got a deal done with Strootman, might be optimistic, but Roma are still going after more players and with Benatia now staying, seems like the only other prized asset they could sell for big money is Strootman.

Having said that, I don't know enough about Romas finances, but they're spending a massive amount of cash so far this Summer for an Italian club.

Roma have some money I think. They made more than €60m last season on departures - Lamela, Bradley and Osvaldo mainly.

Ah, did they not reinvest last summer? Didn't pay any attention to them.

I think they spent some. Strootman alone was €18m, Naingollan was €5m (completed this year though), Gervinho was around €12m too I think. Oh, and they got €32m for Marquinhos last year which I have forgotten but only spend around €13.4m on Benatia. They made a €45m profit last year.

One of the players that I would like to replace Carrick and partner Herrera in our midfield. His defensive attributes complement his offensive ability efficiently, so he will not be a player that just breakup plays in ourr midfield. Moreover, it is good to have another leader on the pitch that will keep our players motivated.

I haven't watched him since he moved to Roma.. how good is he now? Who is he similar to in style?

Roma aren't poor. However I seriously doubt that they can or will resist a good offer from Manchester United.

No. Carrick is out for 3 months already. We don't need another midfielder who could be an injury risk.

Buy someone that is ready to start the first game of the season.

I have never seen him play. Not even once. Watched a youtube video once when he was at PSV, looked like a left footed Carrick.

Great at Roma. Rudy Garcia calls him 'the washing machine' because he cleans everything up. A bit like Carrick in position, but his first thought is about stopping attacks with interceptions or tackles, and recycling possession to his team mates. Straight up DM really, but with easily enough passing ability to play for a forward thinking team.

So perfect for us...

If Roma are involved in a push for the title they probably won't be looking to sell him in January.
I think if they survive without him until November they might take a gamble on selling him in January if the price is right.

Strootman partnering Herrera, with Mata the most advanced might be a good midfield come January.

If his relationship with Van Gaal is what we are led to believe id be inclined to believe he will push for it - title push or not.

I think Strootman's best qualities are his passing abilities. He is a bit of a physical unit and breaks play very well, but his passing range has always impressed me. Would work really well beside Ander, it's a shame he did get injured when he did.

If he didn't get injured he'd likely be a United player now. Feck sake I still can't believe Moyes vetoed him last summer when he would have costed only 18M now we'll have to pay double.

Don't think we can take a risk on him in this window, needs time to get back to full fitness and prove he has recovered properly from the injury. Not convinced we will be able to sign him in January so safest bet would be to get a different player in now and then move for strootman in either of the next two transfer windows.

Also their owner is pretty loaded.

Strootman is training with the team, which means that his reeducation is over, by the end of august he will be playing with Roma.

I'd like Srtootman even if we sign Vidal. The midfield needs a bit of an overhaul and having 3 quality CMs + Carrick would be a good place to start. Also makes sense for matches where we might use a midfield trio.
