I think every solo project of Nas between Illmatic and the projects he's done with Hitboy (I'll make an exception for The Lost Tapes), has been held back to some extent by inconsistent production quality. He's such an alien on the mic that at times you don't notice, but as hard as it is to believe, he'd have more undeniable classics under his belt with the right production.
Again, if he's not dissing Jay-Z, I just cannot find a fit for that beat anywhere else on any project of his.
Catchy though, that bass.
I agree with most of that. I do think people sometimes lean into that a bit too much though. There’s not a single track on I am and Stillmatic, for example, where I felt the production was underwhelming. I sometimes feel Nas was so fecking great a lyricist and a storyteller that people didn’t give the beats/production the attention/respect they deserved.
