He's also been our best player in some matches, with some notable big matches against Juventus and Leicester (the last match of the season that we had to win to get top four). He's not great, but he's also not as bad as you and some others make out.
That’s like me saying lingard was better than people thought because he was good in several big matches.

Wonder where he would have played if we signed him? Also, would we have still signed Martinez?

Having watched him a few times, I'm convinced he'll go onto be one of the greats of his generation - he's that good! However, I still think we need a left footed centre back and right back next season, which would give us two strong options in each position and wouldn't play with the balance if/when Martinez is out.

Left Back - Malacia/Shaw
Left Centre Back - Martinez/Badiashile
Right Centre Back - Varane/Lindelof
Right Back - Dalot/? (ten Hag could also use Lindelof right back. Though he looked really assured when he moved over there against Sociedad)

Or, we could also get Timber and play him centre back and right back.

The likes of Badiashile and Pau Torres won't come here to warm the bench while Martínez plays 50 games a season... We don't need more than 3 very good centre backs since the others will get limited game time.

I don't like all central defenders but nothing next to a Martinez.
Varane does, the rest is firewood.
Really stupid when you buy such players for so much money.
If you want to be a trendsetter you should play with a strong defensive midfielder and a Martinez and Timber in the back.
Everything revolves around position changes, the total football principle.

That your resume can also play well as a left or right back and can even constructively play in midfield.
Think of it as futsal, you don't put a 90 kilo bear of 1.90 cm there either.
You could be so dominant in possession, but let Ajax train the players and ManUtd pay them.
Football knowledge is so low there..
While they pretend they know it all very well, all the former internationals.
It's laughable how she announced tenHag.
How she criticized Martinez.
Every top club will want to buy Timber in the summer of 2023.

Thankfully I dont wear glasses. Lindelof has struggled in certain situations in the PL, he isnt good enough for a title challenging side but he is a good centre back, he isnt great, and thats why I never mentioned he should be starting for us, but it doesnt make him shite. He has limitations, but no need to get carried away. I think he is better than Maguire too but thats not saying much.
We’ve had 6 years of finding out that he’s not a “genuinely good centre back”. He lacks most of the basics of being a centre back and shouldn’t be anywhere near the level of Manchester United

Except the part that he’s good at isn’t actually defending.

He’s great at backing down and letting attackers take shots from outside the box which makes him look good because the stats says he wasn’t beaten by an
pponent .

Great at picking only winnable headers which makes his aerial stats look much better than he actually is.

His way of defending is basically to pray for the opponent to feck it up instead of actually trying to stop them.

There’s a reason why our defensive record has been so poor ever since he’s been part of the starting lineup.
Consecutive contrasting posts about Lindelof featuring 4 different posters.

Sums up Lindelof as a defender at united to be honest. He can stay for another 6 years and I’m sure it will be the same then too. Conflicting mess of a player.

Possibly. The other alternative is getting a left footed centre back, who can also play as a left back and moving Shaw on.

Lindelof is better than Maguire. Easily good enough to be a 4th choice CB at United, not sure the same can be said for Maguire at this point.

I disagree. He was bad last season but in other seasons he was better than Lindelof and he at least isn’t afraid to try and get stuck into a physical attacker. Lindelof is too passive for this league. However, I’d sell the 2 of them as quick as I could

He had one good season for us. He's trash.

Nah. The only thing he's good at is being quiet on the bench, that what makes him worth keeping more than him.

If we had this guy, we could play him as a rotation CB and RB. Theoretically we could sell AWB and Maguire and replace with Timber.

Yeah.. Thats how you convince on of the biggest defensive prospects around to join your club...

"We dont really know how and where to use you as you are not a first choice on a fixed position and neither are we grooming you to become an important player on a fixed position, buttttt if we got you we could rotate you wherever we need you on a specific spot, moreover it will allow us to move on two expensive players as you will fill the gaps they would leave.."

If Timber were to join United its because Ten Hag has a very clear path and plan for him immediately.. Not as a rotation player for two positions...

Lindelof gets away because he keeps a low profile. Captain on the other hand does everything in his power to rile up fans, own and opposition alike. They're both equally bad.

Neither Lindelof or Maguire are bad defenders. They're just flawed and those flaws got massively exposed last season.

The problem is you shouldn't be spending the time of money we did on Maguire, on a flawed player. You pay that kind of fee for a dead cert. Once you cost that kinda fee your leash is short and the expectations are rightly high. And he's failed to live up to them.

Lindelof is also flawed but his fee wasn't anywhere near as bad as Maguire's. He's got a slightly longer leash for that reason.

Would I go back and sign Lindelof for £40m in summer 2017? Probably not.

Would I go back and sign Maguire for £80m in summer 2019? Absolutely not.

Thats not how you spell certainly

Looks a great player but don't see that if we got him who out of him and Martinez would accept a bench role. We need someone without the aggression with reading of the game and the height to compliment him like Varane

Not really. In the grand scheme of things, Lindelof has been decent for most of his time here. He's been reliable fitness wise (compared to Bailly who cost the same amount), and has given a similar level of performance to our £80m defender.

I'm not sure who I would sign in summer 2017 for the same price who would've been that much better looking back.

How many CBs transferred in the summers of 2017/18 who would've cost the same or less than Lindelof, and would've done better for us?

Last off topic reply in this Timber thread for me, but your statement is just ludacris...

With all curreny knowledge still considering Lindelof for that amount of money in 17/18... Crazy..

You could have rather bought no one and divide his minutes over Blind/Bailly/Tuanzebe/ Smalling/others. If you are looking for alternatives Skriniar, Ake, Zouma, Rudiger, Sule, Ginter, Kjaer, Maguire himself all went for similar to (significantly) lower fees that summer..

A year later you could have gotten De Vrij on a free..

Not saying they are all top class players, but there is enough to argue they wouldnt have done less than Lindelof..

I think that's fair in hindsight. With the benefit of hindsight, all of those would've been better decisions for a more reasonable price. I still don't think it was anywhere near as bad of a punt as £80m on Maguire.

Financially maybe but there is also oppertunity cost. The club believed Lindelof was good enough for many seasons so he played many games and it hasnt been the case.

Maguire has been good for England and thats what got him the crazy fee in the first place. So he may retain some of the value if another club comes in for him

I think it would be easier for us to sell Lindelof than Maguire (wages being the key reason).

What kinda fee do you think we can fetch for either of them next summer?

I could ony see it working if we played a back three

...........Timber.....Varane.....Martinez.......
New RWB......Cesimiro....Erikson.....Malacia
...........Anthony....Rashford....Sancho......

Livramento, Dumfries, - anybody who could operate as an effective RWB

That said Im not aware Ten Hag has used a back three often so probably not going to happen but could imagine those three making a very solid back line

Dalot.....................................................Shaw
Think we would have enough cover

Not sure I can see it happening though - especilly as I just cant see a way Bruno gets in the team so most probably we stay with a back 4

Point of a squad and a system is where a player can cover their replacement from a style point of view and I think ability wise aside that's too different from a tactical point of view

But you are aware that he has used a back four often with Timber and Martinez as the centre halves so I don’t even think any complication is needed here. If Timber is signed, we can see where he will fit in.

A back three with a DM like Casemiro though. Overkill.

You can't sign every single player out there, you win some, you loose some.

He has gotten a lot of praise in Dutch media after the last two international games... About his role in the build up from the back, as well as how he was played Hazard against Belgium...

There are absolutely zero claims from whatever direction that either De Vrij or De Ligt should start ahead of him, which is saying a lot..

Yes and the clear path is for him to rotate in two positions while he adjusts to the game and eventually make one position his own over the next few years. I don’t see the issue. He is not Haaland or Mbappe.
