McGinn is a box-to-box midfielder; of course his height isn't as big a concern as it would be for a centre-half.

As for Ben White, whilst he has performed well for Arsenal this season, I've heard plenty of people mention his aerial weaknesses as a cause for concern, and even then he is still taller than Timber.

Some of the best CB's in recent years have been 5"10 or less. Cannavaro, Puyol etc.

We haven’t had a ‘Rolls Royce’ defender like Timber since Rio graced the Old Trafford turf. Would be a great signing and signal ETH’s intent on turning us into a progressive passing side immediately

If you give him time and space he'll spray the occasional nice pass out wide but loads of centre backs have that in them. Overall he's not been good playing out from the back for us, he ponders too long on the ball putting us under pressure and makes just as many sloppy passes as the rest of our centre backs.

I’m all for getting rid of Maguire… I’ve criticised him as much as everyone els so I’m not defending him. I was just saying ten Hag might have faith in his ability to get the best out of Maguire. It’s obvious that a lot of our players are underperforming and that’s probably down to confidence aswell as a lot of changes happening at the club. We do defo need a new pacey cb though if we’re planning on playing possession and dominating football in the oppositions halve. Teams will just keep knocking it over Maguires head for fast attackers to run onto but even when we’re not playing an high line Maguire is constantly out of position and lunges into challenges which then leaves us with 1 at the back.

We'd be lucky to receive a fair fee for even one of those players listed.

Very difficult to move our high earners.
 
So the talk seems to be around de ligt, Antony, de jong and timber. Surely we won’t sign all his ex players, of those, which would you take?

It’s widely reported Palace want AWB and Newcastle want Henderson. There will be plenty of suitors for Bailly. So I disagree. Just because everyone on here has decided all our players are shit doesn’t make it so.

John McGinn is a centre back and Ben White is 6ft according to Wikipedia??

I was more alluding to the fact that nobody has even close to enough money to pay a decent fee for our players. Its been happening for numerous summers now, exacerbated by the pandemic of course. Why do you think the likes of dalot etc. are still here? Martial? Nobody has the money to pay and/or most clubs know they can try to lowball us.

We'd be selling for a cut price, which in that case why not just keep them on for depth instead. Furthermore, most of these players (see: Lingard) don't want to make a move because it will also mean a big paycut on their end.
 
Jurrien Timber would be a great buy for United, but everything he has said so far seems to point in the direction he will not leave Ajax this summer. He has already talked about being with Ajax next season, wanting to learn more and win more prizes, wanting to be Ajax player of the season next season (which went to his partner Lisandro Martinez this year, of whom far to little people are talking by the way and is way more likely to be sold this summer).

Ten Hag only said about Timber that many topclubs will have Timber on their radar, which is not suggesting he thinks he is likely to leave Ajax this summer.

Except teams have made big offers in the past for our players and we turned them down. Everton offered 25m for Rojo. Chelsea wanted Henderson. West Ham and Newcastle were willing to buy lingard. Spurs wanted martial. Dortmund wanted Dalot last season. The brains behind the protecting player’s value strategy in Woodward and Judge have gone. We will sell players this summer.

Not sure this supports the point you are trying to make unless you’re saying that being small is actually a bonus. Otherwise it just means that the only small centre backs that have thrived in competitive leagues are among the greatest in the modern era. You also have to factor in the possession dominance a club like Barcelona has when considering Puyol. These players are exceptions for very good reason. We’ve seen Lindelof exposed many times under a high ball and he’s well clear of 6’2.

Timber is a really exciting prospect but as much as my heart wants it, my head tells me that at this point in our cycle he’s the type of player you buy when all the other jigsaw pieces are in place. Have never wanted to be so wrong in all my life though because literally my only reservation is his physical limitations.

There’s a lot of sense in getting rid of players that are bringing standards down across the board or are actively toxic which at the minimum a non-negligible minority seem to be with all the leaks and Ted Lasso comments.

I agree, we always say so and so isnt worth jack due to there contracts. There are two leaving on frees this summer we could have sold for not far off of £100m in the last couple of seasons.

Will we get anywhere near what we paid, no. Ive even heard some seemingly respected youtubers talking of selling 15 players including the six frees and maybe getting £50m for the lot, ludicrous.

We do have a few that will be really hard to sell for any sort of decent fee with the wages they are on, but we have a few we could selll for £20-30m I feel and a couple of bigger names who even after embarrasingly poor seasons would probably be north of £50m.

We can certainly raise a decent amount of money from sales this summer with a bit of ruthlessnes but the £50m players are going nowhere I feel even though personally for anything approaching those fees I would kick them straight out the door

A big difference between him and Lindelof is that Timber is physically really strong, fast, aggressive. It's only the height. Lindelof isn't strong/fast or dominant in the air.

With Timber, I'd imagine he would start off as our RB where I have 0 issues with his height and then transition into being our CB over time and when we sort out other positions and he needs to replace Varane or Maguire. As long as his partner has the height then it's fine.

If Timber has the abilities to play as a fullback for a moment, I would definitely have no issues with him. But if he plays at CB, then it could be a problem against most PL clubs using big guys as their CFs. Unless Timber grows into a new Thiago Silva (who is one inch taller than Timber), it would be difficult for him to play as a CB straight away.
 
Ruben Dias won just 59.6% of his aerial duels in the league this season, 26th percentile among CBs in Europe's big 5 leagues. Yet that hasn't stopped City from having the best defence in the league this season.There's more than one way to skin a cat.

And as it stands our squad is the tallest and most aerially dominant in the league. Of the many things we lack, height isn't one.
 
He plays centre half every week. I’d rather he was not signed to play RB. Yes, he’s short. But if you are so concerned that he is too short, then don’t sign him, because he is a centre half.

Yup, tuned in for first 10 mins and he was just chatting shite about nothing in particular. Not even about football but I did learn he drinks lots, does exercise and has an injury/illness.

I think that’s his point. The fact you have to go straight to one of the best legends at CB to justify Timber’s height. It highlights how rare it is for a CB to be successful who is short. You will always have exceptions to every rule who are on the extreme ends.

Really don't think it'll be that hard to sell most of those players. Remember we have different people on the recruitment department now who(hopefully) are more competent than their predecessors
AWB- Palace will happily take him back but yeah I do think it'll be tough to sell for a good fee. If the manager doesn't want him however we should just sell for a cut price fee zero point keeping a systematic misfit even for "depth"
Bailly- Almost joined AC Milan in January and has suitors in Spain and other Italian teams as well. Like AWB zero sense keeping him even for "depth" as he's always injured, unhappy at the club and a tactical misfit.
Axel- One year left on his deal and a low earner(20k a week) at 25 we can get a good fee for him since wages aren't an issue like others. Hasn't earned a new deal so sell
Jones- Like AWB will be tough to sell but he'd be at Bordeaux if he had bigger guarantees on game time. Personally think he either leaves for squat or sees out his deal which is the same thing
Henderson- Chelsea offered £50m in 2020. Newcastle have him as their top GK target. With their oil money we could very easily fetch at least £20m. They pay a 32yr old Trippier over £100k a week Henderson's wages won't be an issue there at all.

Baresi is probably the best CB of all time... it's rare but if your smart enough it's fine to be small.

Daley Blind didn't really have an issue with it for us. i remember him pocketing Benteke and Lukaku :lol:

Exactly. Between Henderson, AVB, Bailey and Tzunzabe there is nearly 100m in sales.
