Julio Cesar

The Brazilian goalkeeper's transfer from Inter Milan will be finalised once he has received international clearance and been granted a visa, and he is already relishing the challenge.

He is excited about the club's ambitious plans and feels confident Mark Hughes' men can gradually become a major force in English football.

"I have many dreams at QPR," he told the Daily Mail.

"To play well for the fans, the manager, the chairman and myself. And eventually finish in the top four and qualify for the Champions League and then one day win the Premier League.

"It is possible. A few years ago nobody believed Manchester City would ever win the Premier League. So we have to dream. When you dream, things can happen. That's the reason I came here."

The 32-year-old added: "I'm very, very happy. It's a new experience for me and my family. The opportunity to play in the Premier League, the best football in the world. I can't wait to train, I can't wait to play."

Cesar will vie with fellow summer signing Robert Green to be first choice at Loftus Road and he knows QPR need to improve dramatically following a 5-0 thrashing by Swansea on the opening day.

"I saw the first game. Wow! It was terrible for them and they had some problems but these things happen in football," said Cesar.

"When I met the coach I asked him what happened in the first game. But they drew away in the second game (1-1 at Norwich) and that's a good result.

"I hope to be the No.1, but I have to work hard. I have the ability but I know the Premier League is hard.

"My first game could be against my first coach in Europe. Roberto Mancini brought me to Inter. They have done well but we have to believe we can beat them."

Top four

Yeah, right. Considering our shambles in the first part of the season it wasn't to big an ask, though. Even a mammoth in a gooners' kit will know you need top defenders pronto.

That was when he was persisting with Al about 4 seasons ago.

I've never been convinced that Szczesny is much better. If you sign Cesar then it appears Wenger feels the same. I can't see him going there as a backup.

Even here in Poland, the consensus is Szczęsny hasn't ever been all that.

I'm willing to bet he won't became a top keeper. That's putting his hideous personality aside.

EDIT: Not for a prolonged span (see 3/4 years)

He's only 23, of course it'll be another 3/4 years before he matures (see De Gea too).

Except that De Gea has already comfortably leap frogged Chesney.

Also, conceding less than us after the first half of the season we had really is no achievement.

De Gea is at about the same level. Arsenal had the second least goals conceded in the league last season.

I meant he won't be a top keeper for a duration of 3 or 4 years, not IN 3/4 years' time. Didn't make myself clear, I suppose.

Either way I stick to my prediction.

Koscielny is a brilliant CB. Mertersacker had a solid season, he is a very smart player but his athleticism can let him down though. Vermaelen is coming into a make-or-break season.

Sagna's two broken leg injuries (and age) are catching up with him, but he was pretty good for most of the season bar a few bad performances. Jenkinson took an encouraging step, and will hopefully continue this development going into the new season.

Gibbs and Monreal are both great options, no worries here.

Personally I would be happy with a CB signing, even if it is a young player like Marquinhos or Zouma. If Sagna is sold then we would need to sign a quality replacement, who that would be defeats me though. I think we need a midfield reinforcement first, someone to wax and eventually take over from Arteta more than we need to spend on our defence.

And it would have been a lot more if not for DDG. His save percentage is comfortably better than Szczesny's. That was also the case last season.

United had 7 defenders with 15 games or more in the league. Arsenal had 5.

United were noticeably unstable at the back for major periods of the season. It only really got better when Vidic settled in after coming back. A shocking coincident.

Save percentage is critically dependent on the quantity and quality of chance conceded ie at least as much to do with the back 5 as the keeper alone.

Thought Chesney had a poor season, and promising though he is, there is no way he is as good as De Gea. I thought arsenal might sign Julio Cesar and he will strengthen them no doubt.

That's a good signing for Arsenal. Reminds me of when we signed Van Der Sar, to a lesser extent of course.

I've seen a lot from both of them and Szczesny hasn't begun to show as much as DDG. The save percentage I use as an added point. Not my main one. The DDG has loads of world class saves.
I also did bring up some back 5 facts. We've been saying now for two seasons in a row "hopefully the defense can stay injury free for the most part next season" but that still doesn't happen. Still way too much rotating with the center backs.

As if we've had no injuries? Sagna two broken legs, Gibbs string of problems, plus Vermaelen, Koscielny and Woj himself.

Not a chance. Off the top of my head i remember Lindegaard playing against Spurs, Reading and West Brom conceding 3, 3, and 5 respectively which helps to account for just over a quarter of the goals we conceded all season in the league. Quite ridiculous really.

Every team has injuries. Arsenal has had less in the last couple of years. Sagna played as much this season as Vidic did the last two seasons combined.
You would have been better off this season had Vermaelen not played at all.

PIG-Arse might be a decent keeper in time, but de Gea is easily in a different class. PFA team of the year to boot.
