Manchester United have clinched the signing of top French defender Julien Escude in a £4.3 million deal with Rennes.
JULIEN ESCUDE
The 22-year-old left-back has agreed to join United and is ready to finalise his move once Sir Alex Ferguson and his stars return from Budapest where they take on Hungarian side Zalaegerszeg in the first leg of their Champions League pre-qualifier next Wednesday.
Final details are still to be thrashed out between United and Rennes, but it's understood the deal has been done in principal and will be completed well before the Champions League transfer deadline of August 31.
However, while it's unlikely Escude will be signed in time for the start of United's bid to re-claim the Premiership title from Arsenal, Fergie has clearly won his battle to persuade his board to release more cash after smashing the British transfer record last month with the £30 million capture of Rio Ferdinand from Leeds.
Fergie's persuit of Escude - aided by United's new Under-17 coach Brazilian coach Fernando Filiho who worked with the youngster at the French Academy - is another clear sign that he intends to fight main challengers Arsenal and Liverpool every step of the way this season.
Ferguson has been concerned at the lack of defensive numbers in his squad after letting Ronny Johnsen, Denis Iriwn and Ronnie Wallwork all leave at the end of the season.
But Escude, capped at Under-21 level with France, won't simply be cover - and that will place pressure on fellow Frenchman Mikael Silvestre who will find himself fighting for his place.
