Youve completely missed the context. The guy asked for an example of a young player from a minor league who came straight in and led the line for United. There was no reference to how highly we do or dont rate the respective player.
Aguero and Sterling are both much shorter than a centre back too, as are Owen, Salah, Mane and a fair whack of other strikers who arent target men. Youre beating the drum for irational heightism now. Did your wife run off with a circus midget or something?
I doubt anyone watched him regularly (except maybe couple of posters here) to make informed post on him. I doubt we are looking at him to make instant impact, if anything this looks like one to sign for the future like so many clubs have done. 21 is not old either.
Also going by transfermarkt, he has played 5763 mins which is around 64 full games, he has 61 goals + assists in those games, looks good for 21 year old player.
Anyways when most didn't watch him play, it's better to wait and see, go with what club scouts think about him who would have watched so many games.

I said that I can't think of any main striker who made the immediate jump from River Plate to United. You're correct in mentioning Chica. However things need to be taken into context as well
A- Football had changed since then. Teams are defending deep and in numbers making it harder for strikers to do well
B- Hernandez was 23 when he joined United as opposed to Alvarez (21).
C- Hernandez limited skillset and natural eye for goal made it impossible to play him elsewhere. That's not the case with Alvarez
D- Hernandez didn't had to contend with Ronaldo, Greenwood and Cavani

Chicharito (22 years 1 month) was 2 months older than Alvarez (21 years 11 months) is now when we signed him, and we signed him directly after a WC where he stood out for Mexico.

I don't see these sort of deals as risky at all. Sure there is a higher failure rate due to the gap between SA football and EPL + the cultural difference. Another aspect that frustrates even the best of scouts is how random these signings can be. For example Inter had some of the finest South American scouts in the world back in the day and they were very positive that out of their 1995 bulk buying signings (Carlos, Zanetti, Caio and Rambert), the last name was the biggest star. Turned out that the latest two (Caio was the most expensive and Rambert the most rated) failed big time while Zanetti and Roberto Carlos became WC players.
However that doesn't really matter. South American talent is usually come cheap (salary & fee) which means that if they fail then we'll probably recoup the money by selling them or loaning them across the world. While there's a higher failure rate due to the gap between the two leagues and culture difference, it takes just 1 successful talent to make it worth while.

Vickery is one of the journalists I most rate for judging a player. Very good at doing it in the South American context and then in the context of European football. He’s occasionally got it wrong, but far most often he’s right over the 15 years I’ve listened to him. If he thinks Alvarez is that good, it’s a pretty safe bet he is.
Surely we’re due a good Argentinean at United? With the exception of Romero, they either underwhelm or they turncoat us.

If we were interested it would presumably be because both Martial & Cavani will be gone by the end of the summer (or sooner) and Ronaldo will be a 37 year old past-his-best poacher with little time here left. It's not that much of a leap to think we'll need to improve in that position as well.
It's not like it's either/or and that signing this guy would take preference over signing a midfielder. But he could be available in January while the midfielder we want isn't.
