Julen Lopetegui watch

Seems like a bad move and will fall out with Sullivan in no time.

In what parallel universe do I live in which I read that a manager would rather go to West Ham than mighty Bayern.
Seems silly but there are likely to be other factors if that’s the case

I also think this is a great appointment. I really rate him. Id have had him ahead of Potter, De Zerbi and co

Money and knowing where you are wanted. He'd be publicly known as the guy that was 5th, maybe 6th choice manager at Bayern and I'm sure they would have no issue firing him if thing went badly at the start.

I think the way Nuno was appointed at Spurs had a similar fate to it.

It's not only Lopetegui/West Ham....

The first three are confirmed interests of Bayern, the rest are rumours I've read:
Alonso: Prefers to stay in Leverkusen
Nagelsmann: Prefers to stay with Germany
Rangnick: Prefers to stay with Austria
Emery: Extented contract with Aston Villa
Hoeneß: Extented contract with Stuttgart
Xavi: Extented contract with Barca
Tuchel: Confirmed that he is definitely leaving
Rose: Confirmed that he will stay in Leipzig

And for the bonus round:
Heynckes: Presumably run off into the forest without any communication devices after ripping out his landline and laying landmines around his house so that his good friend Uli definitely can't get through to him.

Wolves were bottom of the table when he took over last season (10 points from 15 games). Finished the season 13th with 41 points so he won 31 points out of 69 available. That sounds decent. Left in August due to club's financial situation.

The first three I've also read so there must be semblance of truth to those, the rest I'm not so sure about (I cannot reconcile Xavi's relentless moaning with the German media landscape).

There should be some serious soul searching going on in Bayern. Can't they give Uli and Rummenige a gag order to make the job more palatable?

Or can they just give Uli and Rummenigge the manager job and a bigger microphone?

The first three were actually confirmed by Hoeneß himself in an interview. The rest... yes, I am also not sure which were a real interest and which were pure media speculation. But I also don't care because it's just fun to watch that disaster unfold and laugh about it. The more names appear on the "rejected Bayern" list, the more fun it is

Didn’t he behaved like a cnut on the touchlines when we went away to play his Wolves side? I think Ole was still our manager that time?

The “be careful what you wish for” brigade are gonna be proven right on this one

Why do teams keep going for this guy. I don’t rate him at all.

Better league and bigger challenge. Although I’d be quite interested in managing Bayern and re capturing the title of Leverkusen.

They are having a tough time finding a new one. Everyone is declining their offers, apparently.

Tbf I think the expectation between Bayern and West Ham is very differnt. The Bayern job is a bit of a poisoned chalice, even if you do alright you can end up being sacked. Think he would probably get paid more at West Ham too.

Don't think Ten Hag will (stubborn, slightly weird guy though he appears to be). Even with Leverkusen and potential Dortmund resurgence etc, right now it's much closer to an 'Ajax in Holland' situation than 'United in the PL' in terms of likelihood for challenging for trophies. His overload style with its physical demands upon the CMs would probably work better with that squad too, even though there are generally huge issues with the risk/reward calculation IMO.

It was under ten Hag, last day of 2022, Rashford scored and we won 1-0.

He won them 31 out of possible 69 points to survive comfortably after being bottom of the table when he took over (15 games in). However, his Wolves side played boring football so surely he's capable of better than that otherwise replacing Moyes with Lopetegui seems pointless.

The CMs all over the place only work if the defenders are clever (and fast) enough to read the game and position themselves accordingly. Unfortunately those kind of tactical ideas sometimes create ambiguities and suddenly we are again in a situation where our defender have no midfield cover whatsoever and are facing opposition players 1 on 1.

Bizarre appointment. The fella is Moyes adjacent in terms of how he plays football. He’s hardly one of footballs great entertainers.

The career of a manager really depends on perspective. At Portuguese league he was named Flopetegui, since he had the most expensive Porto's squad ever and won zero titles during his two seasons ahead of them.
Yeah, they had a lot of possession, but they created few clear chances.

Never rated him, so in that sense I suppose he is a good fit for that club. But their squad isn't too terrible, so it will be interesting to see what he does. I hope he fails.

Was crap at Wolves too. A manager who is overhyped for being Spanish and because he briefly managed Real Madrid once.

I don't really get what they're trying to do.

My understanding of Lopetegui's approach was low tempo, possession heavy, suffocating football. Relatively low scoring and defensively solid, but through a heavy emphasis on keeping possession, playing from the back, not sitting deep in a low block, attacking fullbacks providing the width, etc.

But as far as I can see the players they brought in this summer don't really fit that possession-focused approach, apart from possibly Todibo. So is Lopetegui trying to do something different or have they recruited players who don't really fit? I don't get it.
