He's in fantastic form. Long may it continue, love the little guy.

Nice goal. He occupied the striker position as Zlatan dropped off. Made a few nice runs. He had a subdued 1st half but started to take hold off the game after the 2nd half as Rooney started interchanging with him. Overall good game.

But, some on here, I feel, are waiting to pounce as soon as he doesn't get a goal/assist.

What's the opinion of him in Spain? @Vato @jojojo etc..

His NT record is almost identical to his domestic one- 10 goals in 41 games vs 109 goals in 426 - and he scored in the 2012 final, so he's presumably thought of as a dependable option, at the very least?

Basically feck Spain and their ridiculous midfield options.

He's in the best form of all our players imo.

Has to start every game whether it's no.10 or on the right.

Top, top player. Seems to be involved in all of our goals.

He's so good and I'm glad the caf is finally beginning to see it.

The attempted chip would of been ridiculous if it had went in.

Always been a big fan, he's in great form, but I still don't think he's the long term option on the right. I don't think Mourinho will either.

The only way it's possible is if we find an incredible right back.

I love that we're finally letting players like Mata express themselves creatively again. They're not scared of losing possession under LVG, they're trying long range efforts, fancy flicks and lovely stuff like Mata's chip.

That chip attempt was so good. Had that been a goal, would have ranked as among the greatest goals in our club's recent history

Been a long time since we saw one of those go in, I can only think back to Rooney in the cup in 2007 - surely there's been others since then?

No idea mate seeing as I live in Belgium. :D

This is also the only football board I read and the occasional article on Marca.

I was weary how his situation would turn out with Mourinho coming in, nothing to worry about now as he took everything in stride and let his quality shine through. More than his technique, which I've always highly rated, I'm impressed with the way he puts a shift in and this goes back to his time before Mourinho. He came to United determined to dispel the notion he was lazy and a defensive liability, it's safe to say that notion was BS like most of the shite we read these days :)

Ironically enough, he's better under Mourinho than any manager at United.

Having said all that, I still hope Mourinho doesn't replace him. Although he's playing really well, I can't help but think Mourinho still sees faults in him. It would be a real shame to see him leave United cause he's earned the right to start regularly here.

Another goal yesterday, definitely our player of the season so far. The special Juan!

To be honest I also have that niggling feeling he's not safe despite all he has done so far, I would be very disappointed if Mou sold him after all.

He has to start all must win games. (which is basically every game) :P

Its kinda underrated how much he helps move us up the pitch as well as his pressing / getting into a position to help us when we dont have the ball. Also dont think he should ever be subbed unless were winning by 2 goals.

It's a matter of where to fit Mata, Micky and Rooney in the team. For me, the former two must be guaranteed as starters.

Micky hasnt yet done enough on a consistent basis to be considered a guaranteed starter. He had a really good game against Feynord but needs a run of them to be considered a guaranteed starter

Granted but with Zlatan the designated #9, Mata is the most productive and Micky would add a bit of pace and direct play or else is just a bunch of slow players

Lingard is pacy and can do that job until Miky is fully up to speed. What Im concerned with is making sure he gets enough time to settle properly and get all his confidence back.

Good that we played a fluid front as I believe he should not be stuck to the right wing. He's in great form and should be our first attacking player on the team sheet!

If zlatan was playing half as well as mata we would have threads demanding to rename old trafford after him

Yet poor old Juan continues to be under appreciated by many.

On another note... how many times has he scored when he was just about to be subbed? Maybe Jose should just prepare fake substitutions every 10 mins or so

I'm not in Spain now. In the Del Bosque era, Mata was always the reliable squad player, who didn't kick up a fuss and could be trusted to do a job when called on. I think as Spain declined, he was looked on by the media/fans as being part of the old generation, not the new one. A bit harsh on a 28 year old, but there we go. Lopetegui is still experimenting I think, in particular he's leaving out players who aren't in form for their clubs and using ones who are, so Mata's Spain career very much relies on his United form.

Surprised at the praise. Goal aside and a few good moments here and there, I thought he was quite poor for my standards.

He doesn't affect the game enough as an individual imo.

Hear me out here, I know and appreciate all the good stuff like linking up play, incisive passes and keeping the game ticking in the final third but in games like yesterday and for years now, we've lacked genuine ball carriers and individual offensive threats.

He's not a natural right winger and he has great output there but it's a testament to Valencia's engine that he's able to make that right wing look 'good' i.e offer width and not getting overrun because he can more than hold his own against one or even two players attacking down his side.

In an ideal world, Miki would be on the right, an on form Martial on the left and Pogba as the 10/left attacking mid (in front of Herrera + DM).

Mata still has to offer more for me. Better hold up play, more ball carrying, more runs off the ball etc. Basically Lingard's athleticism but Mata's brain. I think we have that in Miki and it's up to Martial/Rashford to take the left wing place for me.

It's a conundrum because obviously there are other areas and things to address and the things I am criticising him is not solely his fault. He offers us great output but at the same time, when we have Zlatan and Rooney (these two having their own problems in this team too), there's not enough movement or penetration down the channels or the middle.

Criticising Mata's movement seems weird to me given how often he makes clever runs off the ball.
