Journalist Grant Wahl has passed away in Qatar

So why the hell did he open his mouth to suggest something so inflammatory in the first place with zero evidence? Absolutely ridiculous.

he'd just found out his brother had died, was upset and angry and wanted someone to blame

it's understandable

Good for the family to get clarity of what happened. It was a natural cause, their hearts should find it easier to accept.

Christ, grief hits different people differently. Kudos to him for posting a categorical retraction.

It's commendable that he posted this. Hopefully they will find some peace, it must be awful to experience the relatively sudden death of a relative while they are supposed to be momentarily away.
Going through the brother's feed - he posted a lot of misinformation and lies about Grant's death which made a tragic situation even more desperate - for example, he said there were no defibrillators at the stadium (there were), he said his brother didn't go to hospital in an ambulance (he did), there was someone following him around (there wasn't).

But obviously if you find out your family member dies unexpectedly abroad your mind doesn't work the way it should. It's one of the ills of social media I guess that a lie/misrepresentation can travel so widely in such a short space of time.

I remembered one of the "virtual news" in GTA V, with its tongue in cheek, when I read about this. Over facts implying corruption, Percival Mayweather responded "this is coincidence masquerading as incrimination".

Guess it was just an emotional reaction to losing a close family member, he shouldn't have made the video in the heat of the moment though.

Can't blame him for the video considering the circumstances and his emotion at the time.

Anywho - I don't know a lot about Grant Wahl but from further reading it sounds like he was a giant of US soccer reporting, and an excellent principled sports journalist. Sad that he's gone at such a young age.

I didn't like the way he went about it nor did I liked the way many people including in this thread went about it. But in his case, I could understand the distress and the inability to think straight which is why I like the fact that he didn't go radio silent and used the same platform.

A pretty good long-form journalist, he is definitely a loss for journalism.

Its not understandable at all. Its normal to be angry at the sudden loss of a loved one. It is not normal to immediately broadcast on social media something for which you have zero evidence just because you are emotional.

He needs to learn to grieve differently. He's a grown man. Sewing further division amongst people and heightening tensions without evidence should not be excused in the name of "grief."

You've either never suffered that kind of grief or have a severe lack of empathy. In either case this is a toxic mindset.

People immediately and emotionally broadcast on social media literally thousands of times every minute. The vast majority of which will be massively flawed, or even outright wrong, and will be regretted once actual facts are known.

Whilst he shouldn’t have done so, what’s done is now done and can’t be changed. I can understand him reacting in that manner, it’s totally different from John Doe on the street pushing that narrative.

It is toxic to accuse others of murder without any evidence and further inflame racial tensions in the process just because you've lost someone. When normal people lose people close to them they don't go around accusing peoole of murder because that is totally immature and is a very serious accusation to make. There's a billion more ways to grieve than throwing around murder accusations.

Why don’t you go kill off a few more of his family members to give him some practice?

Most people don't publicly see the same person detained for wearing a shirt and see the chief executive of the tournament callously dismiss death as a "natural part of life" about another death in the days before their brother died. Of course he shouldn't have said it but you're expecting way too much of someone who has just shockingly lost their sibling at the other end of the world, that's the sort of moment that you're allowed some empathy and understanding for being irrational. But you're right, a simple "RIP Grant" and then going back to business would have been the mature approach.

That's just it, normal people do not act "normally" when they are in the depths of extreme grief. People act differently. Some shut down, some lash out, some attack themselves, etc. etc, but the common thread is that their view shrinks down to a narrow spec of awareness. They don't give a flying feck about anything else. That is what grief is.

He was very overzealous but he has also seen his brother detained at the WC for wearing a rainbow shirt (for his brother I might add).

He will also already have been very worried about his brother going to a country that claims his (the brother's) sexual orientation is immoral and punishable by years in jail. I can see why he leapt to that conclusion in such a shocked state of fear and grief.

That is the first thing people should think about when a family member unexpectedly dies.

as I mentioned in an earlier post. The brother acting out should have been understood. You lose a family member like that you’re searching for answers.

it’s on the people who took that further and made something off of it. Not the family members

his family and brother seem like genuine nice folk. They’re not interested in spreading propaganda they just wanted answers for a lost loved one

Not quite a billion...

Wouldn't have doubled down on such an idiotic earlier post, but you did with this one. Impressive in a way.

Once again the issue is misinformation of Qatar by media outlet for years especially around this World Cup. You can’t blame his brother for suspecting something even in a “normal” state let alone someone grieving.

The portrayal of Qatar in the west is not his fault

From his wife (an MD) from her moving tribute on Grant's substack:
A note from Grant's wife, Céline Gounder (substack.com)
An autopsy was performed by the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office. Grant died from the rupture of a slowly growing, undetected ascending aortic aneurysm with hemopericardium. The chest pressure he experienced shortly before his death may have represented the initial symptoms. No amount of CPR or shocks would have saved him. His death was unrelated to COVID. His death was unrelated to vaccination status. There was nothing nefarious about his death.

What happened in lay speak? A part of his aorta burst or was blocked?

An aneurysm is when an artery expands to become much wider than normal. That can ends in a rupture, which will usually kill you. There can be many years between the aneurysm forming and bursting.

There’s a type of aneurysm in the upper aorta called a dissecting aneurysm where it doesn’t actually burst but bleeds into the aorta lining and shears it away from the main part of the artery. Usually with the same outcome. Dunno if that’s what he had, mind you.

People are being harsh on his brother. Throwing out foul play theories may not be right, but he was clearly in shock; shock that his apparently healthy brother had just died under, at the time, unexplained circumstances. He was probably also feeling a sense of guilt, knowing that his brother received death threats following him speaking up for LGBT rights and wearing a rainbow shirt, partially driven by himself (the brother) being gay. It's not unlikely he felt responsible for his brother wearing a rainbow shirt and receiving death threats as a result.

Grieving people don't always act rationally, and often look for reasons why something unexpected happened. And as far as irrational behaviour goes, knowing of death threats leading up to such a sudden death certainly doesn't help in reacting rationally.

2 things could be true at once:
What his brother did was understandable and the fact he retracted it immigration commendable but it was a pretty dumb thing to do to begin with.

Not too hard is it.

Posters here only too happy to pour petrol on wholly-preposterous claims of ‘murder’ need to have a look at themselves. As others have alluded to, peddling those unsubstantiated rumours so thoughtlessly bordered on bigotry, plain and simple.

The Qataris have put on a fantastic tournament but certain folk want to derail this global football success by highlighting any perceived-to-be-negative story, patently false or otherwise.

In the days before, he was talking about having a tight chest. I'm not sure if that was on a podcast or just in print? Either way, I think it's fair to guess that was a symptom of this. From the sounds of it maybe even going to get it checked wouldn't have saved him?

Anyway, Rip Grant. Gone way too young.

Most likely not.

One scenario I can see where he could have made it is, if he just traveled back and went to an ED in USA, he would have had a CT scan of chest with contrast to rule out blood clot (due to travel) and that would have found the aneurysm. However on day to day like, some shortness of breath and chest tightness won't always get you a CT of the chest (although it's being done so much more commonly nowadays)

The fact the first thing that even came to their minds was murder shows the type of people they are. It’s been a great World Cup, I was in Qatar and had an amazing time with the family. Back in Dubai now and this World Cup has done wonders to show how amazing it is in these parts but some can’t wait to find any little thing to paint a dreary picture.

Who is / was actively drumming up the murder angle in this thread?

You nutter who think Qatar have murdered him also think Covid was a hoax and the vaccine is the cause for heart attacks? Tin foil hat loons.
