Joshua Kimmich — free agent in the summer, Bayern withdraw renewal offer

Real, City or Barca then

Do not want. Will be another Casemiro or worse Schweinsteiger type with his best years behind him. Nobody we sign should be 30 or older

Looks like a Barcelona type signing.
I can see them being interested, Madrid and Pool are also quoted as potential destinations. But I have no idea about the level of his game currently - few years ago I was convinced he's among the best players in the world in his position/positions, super versatile, smart, brilliant on the ball. But his stock went down a fair bit, didn't it?

I don't watch Bayern much, has he reached the heights that were expected of him? Or is he seen as someone that fell short?

it's a different kind of risk to buy a 30 yo past his peak for 70m, like we did with Casemiro, and a different risk to bring a 30 yo past his peak on a free, even on a healthy salary.

I think we'll need our Bavarian residents for this, I also wonder what's the opinion on him. And why Bayern would backtrack on their renewal proposal.

It is but it's still a risk. Schweinsteiger was on a free too and that didn't work out.

Not a good idea. No doubt on high wages, achieved lots at Bayern and won't have the fire and ambition we desperately need to rebuild the squad with.

Isn't he a bit of an oddball also?

Even on a free I’d steer clear. He’s been at the top for 10 years, plenty of miles on the clock and the hunger inside him is probably dying by the day. Ed Woodward would’ve been on the first flight to Munich before you can say ‘pre-retirement payday’. Hopefully INEOS see it differently.

Difficult to say. I think he never became that incredible worldclass player many hoped for. But he is still very, very good and could play for basically any team in the world.
The reason we’re letting him leave isn’t really related to his performances. He’s still really good and considering his incredible fitness, will likely continue to be so for a while. He’s just asking for too much money and the relationship with the club is damaged, ever since he refused to get vaccinated during Covid and missed time because of it. And as the relationship isn’t that great, both sides, but especially Kimmich, played hardball in the negotiations and we seem to have had enough of that.

There have been reports that he offered himself to other clubs, but their offers were nowhere near what we offered. Shortly afterwards, we have taken our offer from the table.
I would not rule out an extension. But now it would have to come from his initiative and he’d have to accept a team friendly deal. I’d be fine with that, but could live with his departure, too.

If United were to be interested, he could be a really good player for you. As long as you don’t overpay. Other than the Covid drama, he’s been a model professional, leaves everything he has on the pitch and wants to lead his team.

ahhh now I remember all the drama about him not wanting the vaccine. But he took it after all and later admitted he should've done it earlier, right?

Personally think he's always been vastly over rated. Bayern don't usually let players leave without good reason if they still have a use for them.

I'd be steering well clear.

He took it later. But ever since, it was pretty clear that he was pissed because the club pressured him to do it. The whole saga was incredibly confusing and it didn’t make him look good. Especially since he partnered up with Goretzka to create a charitable initiative that provided vaccines he himself refused.
He’s a bit of an odd fella.

No thanks. Had enough of players who have peaked elsewhere deciding to move to United for a final payday.

Pep is going to be all over this, I remember him being really fond of him when he was there.

Wouldn't mind this tbh, especially on a free, as long as we're being resonable with the wages. Getting rid of Eriksen and Case, would be good to get some experience in, he's so versatile too.

I don’t think it’s about the money for him. I think it’s really because he feels mistreated and disrespected by the club.

No thanks - we need players who aren't coming for a payday and want to improve and challenge themselves. If Amorim wants him thats different but I imagine he wants more younger players who are willing to listen and develop - not one who has won everything possible and thinks he doesn't need to be told how to play

However, if he wanted to come in and be a useful player and mentor the younger players like Mainoo and others we sign then I'm all for it

I wasn’t aware of that part. An oddball indeed!

That's what I was thinking, too. With Casemiro and Eriksen gone we have very little experience in the midfield and we're in a bit dire financial situation so might need to look at 'deals' like this one.

United were speculated to look into free transfers more often now but we're also clearly looking to bring in players with the right age profile, which seems to be anyone over 27 is a complete no go.

Madrid seems like an ideal destination for him? They do lack a high-volume passer in the middle and Perez loves his free signings… I’m surprised that there haven’t been many links.

As for us — Kimmich had been pretty outspoken about his unwillingness to sign for any “project” club as at this point he doesn’t want to waste his time on something that can not happen. I think it’s pretty much a certainty that he won’t consider the idea of signing for a bottom half (currently) PL club in order to get them back to glory.

Yup. He’s also very religious and I have heard, but don’t know for a fact, that he’s a member of some free church. Which would explain his hesitance to get the vaccine, as that was quite common within these communities.
What is also a little strange about all this is, that he just built a new home in Munich for his family (four children) which makes his refusal to sign a new contract even weirder.

On a free transfer with a short-ish contract, he'd be a good addition. But I doubt very much that's what he's after, even ignoring our lack of CL football, and we shouldnt offer more than that, so I don't think he's United bound. Shame though, a player I really like.

Please, no. Really good player no doubt, but these are the mistakes that bite us in the ass in two years time when their performance levels drop and we're stuck with a big contract we can't shift. We need to focus resources on younger players to build a longer term spine.

No chance of us actually getting him but we should definitely try. It's dumb to spend 70m on old players to bring in. It absolutely isn't a bad idea to get them on frees when they have good fitness records and they fill a need.

The exact time when you do take the chance on older players is when they are on free transfers. Yes will need big wages, but he fills a position of need and can play either as a deeper playmaker or a right back and be a huge improvement. Can replace Ugarte or play alongside him which is good as we fall apart without Ugarte currently. So in terms of midfield signings, this would be an incredible bit of business. Save the budget for the CF and #10.

The mistakes that bite us in the ass are spending big money on these players, not getting them on frees. We spend big which limits our future spending as it has a big impact on our FFP/PSR stuff. If he's on a free then as long as it's wages that are representative of his level then it's fine. We are able to have big wage players, it just has to make sense. If you have too many older players it's a problem, but we're going to lose a few older players and high earners so there will be space for that, and he fits a need.

Not a chance anyway, City seem the most realistic option.

If Bayern aren't keen to renew it tells you all you need to know. Clubs like Real or Bayern don't let players who are still in their peak leave (usually)
