Jose Mourinho | Spurs manager

At every club he's been at since 2002, Mourinho has won trophies. Will he win one at Spurs?

As funny as it is, i feel it's a very risky move by Mourinho. He's in a bit of a slump and will definitely not get the same amount of money he had at other clubs. He'd have to win something big to refresh his status in the game. With Liverpool and City, the league is very hard to see happening.

what I asked for and you gave it here , an opinion as you lot (maybe not you) but you're fan base spend yrs reminding us while he was here, all we got was a cheque book manager and a park the bus specialist and now you have that with a chairman not knowing for flashing the cash

He is a cheque book manager, that's the odd bit for me.

Think the players might suit him better. As @Inigo Montoya said in another thread, Kane and Son could suit his counter attacking style down to the ground. Toby and Jan a big defenders that he will like. They can also be dirty and he will like that as well. Our lot could be a bit too nice for Jose.

Other problem with our lot: most of our players already accomplished something big in their careers, and Jose finds it difficult to motivate this type of players.
Pogba won Serie A and titles for France. A lot of our squad players won several titles under our shirt and same for the incoming players, with the exception of Lukaku who just got fatish.

It is very hard to convince a whole group to play the way Jose likes to play, because in the end of the day the common footballer loves to have the ball, loves to dominate other teams.
And spending most of the time closing up space and patiently waiting for a vertical counter to exploit a positioning gap it can become frustrating to players with certain types of personality.

We didn't even get that! He was miserable from day one.
To be fair he was fairly upbeat at the start, the first year I can't remember a huge amount to moan at.

We all know how this ends up anyway. He will get Spurs hard to beat and grind out results, they'll eventually start doing badly and then it'll become "me and not us".

Unless Levy gives him everything he wants it'll fail just like the others.

Good point by Holt. Underdogs suits him.

Is that how Spurs fans see themselves? Is that how Levy and the club see themselves? I know Spurs aren't United or Liverpool, etc., but i thought their whole thing was to be seen as that.

I think he’ll do well. They have a strong squad with maturity and leadership. He should have more than enough material to come out swinging, if he can get the players on his side.

That's his real problem. Some of his better players want out and will be off on a free transfer, they probably give zero fecks.

This is such a good post. So true. He won’t be able to motivate this spurs squad to play the way he wants to. And that’s the only way he can play.

My brothers a spurs fan, He's not one bit pleased with the sacking of Poch at all, and even less about Jose taking over.

I think its universally agreed, Jose manages to reinvigorate clubs and bring a new lease of life, but after about 1.5 - 2 years in, the cracks start to show, and within a year or so from then he's burned the place down from the inside and leaves a trail of carnage. Thats simply what happens when you plan for short term only and happen to such a volatile character like Jose

Its funny, I couldnt stand him before he took over at United, didnt really like him whilst at OT, just wanted rid of him towards the end... But have had a bit more admiration for him since he left and started the punditry. Ill give him a few weeks at spurs and no doubt ill be back at square one, hating him all over again

I think he will fail. Although the attack is good and he can probably improve the defense.

Wouldn't it be sweeter if he got into position to squash, Liverpool dreams again.

That's a very good point actually I didn't think of it in that angle.

I do however feel a lot of that may go out the window in a world cup semi and final in ways it wouldn't in club football purely because unlike the trophy's at club level, you don't dive straight in for another shot if you fail. There's another four years until another chance to win the trophy comes about and you may not get selected the next time round.

Yes, it will mainly work at national teams level as you very well said. But if it is almost the same generation defending a title, that might not work because the players know they still have credit, unless the press does a "good job" of criticizing the players so he can instill the war on them.

Christ, mate, this is such a minor point to pick at. You're just coming across as insecure. You followed me around in the summer when I said Maguire was a massive risk to spend £80m on when you had bigger problems in other areas and I think I've turned out to be right about that. Let me have this one, eh?
In what way has it turned out to be a massive risk proven right? Maguire for Smalling has been a fantastic upgrade. The issue is that we didn't replace Lukaku/Sanchez. If it's a case of either or (which it might well be, to be fair) then yeah you'd be right (had Martial stayed fit then we probably wouldn't be discussing it).

This lot haven't won anything so he might be on a winner if he can convince them his way is the way to win trophies.

How long will it take before the WAR starts with Levy. He won't be handed buckets of cash like he was in other jobs. I can't see him lasting the full 3 years tbh.

Spurs sack Poch and replace him with his polar opposite Jose Mourinho less than 24 hours later. If that's not bad enough, Levy rubs salt in the wounds by doubling Jose's salary.

Ruthless.

very interesting this.
Maybe Levy reckons this Spurs squad is as good as its ever going to be under his tenure and he needs a trophy to show for it. Say what you want about Mou but he wins trophies. Even if it all falls apart in a year or two at least this "golden generation" would have won a FA cup (or anything really) which would be great for the club and their fans.

It is a gamble because with the spine of this team leaving Spurs need to start re-building and Mou is the last manager you want for that. They could be in a real mess in two or three years time

A bit generalistic and no where close to the truth if were looking back over 9 months I am afraid, we have been playing shite football for some time.

Honestly dont see something special happening here. Maybe they will win a Fa cup and thats it.

How are the Spurs fans reacting to the Jose appointment?

Mixed I would say 50/50. He wouldn't have been my choice given his time at United, but having said that it could be the start of Levy starting to loosen the purse strings. No way Jose would come in and operate how Poch was happy to at the start. I support him until he turns into the massive cock we all no he can be.

I find my interest of football reinvigorated as Mourinho is back. Don't get me wrong, he deserved to be sacked from our club, but it's very amusing to see him somewhere else.

Jesus, I didn't even hear about Pochettino getting fired so this is all quite surrealistic.

As for Mourinho, I don't think he's over the hill as a manager, results were pretty good at United until he deliberately sabotaged the start of his third season because he didn't get the transfers he wanted.

It's just that with his personality things can get toxic so quick, if I were advising him I'd have been adamant that he had to take a nice sabatical on a tropical island until the summer of 2020 before even thinking to get back into management. Maybe even wait until 2021, have a fresh start in Italy or something.

Somehow I don't feel he will even last three years at Spurs.

Is this the first time that Jose has joined a club mid-season? If it is then it is a completely new experience and challenge for him. He will need to motivate and convince a tired group of players that he is still a great manager and that his tactics (no matter how dour) will be a success. A bridge too far for him in my opinion.

Time will tell, again wouldn't have been my first choice given what happened at United.

Has there been word about a presser? There’s not much info on Spurs’ website as of yet. Probably because it all happened very fast I imagine.

Id say sometime today, but haven't heard anything. It would be odd to have his first press conference a match day one.

How long until the Spurs fans get tired of seeing 2 DM's, and a compact back line. A creative masterpiece of Sissoko and Dier midfield all the players rigidly sitting in their compact holding roles without the ball.

No adventurous fullback play, long balls, route one to Kane. No pressing, maybe the occasional counter attack. And that is it. Fun times ahead for Spurs, I await the game where Jose lines up with a midfield three of Dier, Foyth, Sissoko, backed by Alderweireld and Vertonghen. With the full backs told not to venture out of their own half.

He looks like a new man. Full of energy. A fully motivated Mourinho is a dangerous one. I think next season will be his best for Spurs, making top 4 and maybe winning the FA Cup or Carabao cup, after that things will go downwards because Levy won't spend big.

Shhh, don't tell Poch fans that. Some of them even think he plays a 4-3-3 formation.

I'm not saying United were an underdog when Mourinho took over, I'm just saying they were more of one than Spurs currently are. In the three seasons before Mourinho's appointment United finished 7th, 4th, 5th and won the FA Cup. In the last three seasons under Poch, Spurs have finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and reached the Champions League final. The level of expectation at Spurs might not be the same as at United but Spurs are still currently better placed to succeed than United were in 2016.

Anyway, this is getting away from the point, which is that this is a horrible appointment by Spurs and just about the worst decision Levy could have made to patch the team back together after a difficult spell. We know how this is going to go: Mourinho will probably win one of the domestic cups in the next two seasons but will leave them considerably worse off in almost every department, before leaving under a cloud with a massive payout. He's done the same thing at every club he's been at since forever - why would this go any differently?
It's really not that simple. Playing for a traditionally prestigious club throws up its own set of pressures that don't exist elsewhere except at other similarly large clubs. For example Mourinho was constantly under pressure to deliver a certain style of football at United despite whatever troubles we may have. We were expected to challenge from a position of 5th because we had big pockets. These things don't have happen at Spurs to the same extent even if they finish above us a few years.
