Jose Mourinho | Sacked by Roma

I remember liking the Roma team around the turn of the century under Capello, and being very happy when they won the Scudetto in the 2001 (I think that was the final season that Serie A games were televised on Channel 4).

I didn’t imagine at that time, they in the next 20 years their only silverware would be 2 Coppa
Italias. It’s nice to see them winning a trophy again. We’ll see what happens going forward, but Mourinho seems very suited to life in Serie A, plus the fact that the expectations on him are lower at Roma compared to most of his previous clubs where he was expected to deliver league titles quickly.
Well to be fair while Roma are one of the most popular teams in Italy courtesy of being located in their capital and home to some truly world class players through the years they've never been one of italy's premier trophy winning teams like the big three.

Thats just their level a few titles here and there and if they're lucky a Scudetto every 20 years, not unlike their rivals and dear neighbors Lazio who themselves won the scudetto one year before Roma with a truly outside team and gone on to do feck all.
Although to be fair Roma has been rather unlucky as well as they got very close to winning it again and only lost it by hair thin margins.

I really hope one day the juvenile acolytes/cultists/haters nonsense stops on this forum. It plagues every discussion about managers

Nah it's only really true and funny with Jose, he's the reason the division started and still does. People claiming Murtough has a cult meant the whole thing became a very very silly nonsense.

Off topic, but go ahead and look up the squad Lazio had back then. They were far from being an outside team.

Do you mean in the UCL or in Europe? Didn’t we reach a European final last season? True we didn’t win it but we were a missed pen from the gk away from winning it.

We’re not RM in Europe, far from it, but how can you say we’re (I quote) absolute shit? You don’t need hate from oppo’s when our own fans think this way.

Hope I’m wrong but it looks like many on this thread would actually love to have Mourinho back at Utd. Totally baffling to me.

We reached a Europe League final, after getting KOed from CL group stage. That's like the bare minimum I will expect from a CL team getting embarrassingly dropping to the 2nd tier competition.

We are shit in Europe indeed. Ever since our last final in CL in 2011 we have nothing worthy to be noted in Europe bar winning Europe League once. We haven't even reached CL semi final since then and the best result was QF twice. We have become a 2nd tier team happy to reach Europe League final despite losing it, says it all I guess. A club of our statue and money invested in it and it couldn't even win EL more than once during this period despite dropping in it several times. Meanwhile Seville have won it 4 times during that period.

I don't want Mourinho back and he deserved to get sacked but this press conference is overhated and he only said the brutal truth in it (and still, he didn't say the club sucks, just that the current lot has been awful last few years in comparison to other competitors). Getting annoyed by it is more of being delusional rather than anything.

Is it possible to have a conversation about him without cultists or no cultists stuff.

Anyway won a 3rd European competition and 5th European trophy overall. Only manager to win 5 along with Trapattoni and only manager to win a European trophy with 4 different clubs. Tottenham only club he didnt win anything with. :D

He seems to enjoy it at Roma and they love him there for good reason. They havent won a thing in Europe since 1961.

One more "he speaks the truth". If he spoke truth he would have said how shit he was for the club. All he did was blame everyone and took 0 responsibility.

You are saying "he gets lot of hate", likewise he gets more love than anyone else too and it's baffling to see why. He is a nobody at ManUtd, at least Chelsea fans loving him makes sense as he is a legend for them.

Winning trophies makes zero sense to you? A "nobody". Jose causes as much polarisation as Boris.

Yeah I know, thats why I said done feck all as you expect that team to accumulate maybe a few more titles.

What a team that was though.

I think Roma have finished 2nd in Serie A something like 7 times since their 2001 Scudetto win, finishing 2nd in an exciting 3 horse race with Juve and Inter the next season, being edged out by Mancini's Inter in 2008 and Mourinho's Inter in 2010, finishing with impressive points totals but coming up against the Juve juggernaut under Conte / Allegri etc. Plus there was a period in which they lost in quite a lot of Coppa Italia finals either side of their 2 wins in 2007 and 2008, so for quite a long period they were the bridesmaids of Italian football.

I don't think that Lazio had a particularly illustrious history before their huge spending Sergio Cragnotti era (City's pre-Sheikh Mansour was probably better). But then they became a real force during the late 90s. I remember them narrowly missing out on winning the Scudetto in 1999 (in fact they were top for most of the season before Milan leapfrogged them near the end), but they won the final ever edition of the Cup Winners' Cup, and then edged out Juve the next season following the debacle in the rain in Perugia. That Lazio team had Nesta, Veron, Nedved, Salas, Simeone, Mihajlovic etc. and so was incredibly strong and star studded. Then the following summer, they spend huge money again on Crespo, Claudio Lopez, Fiore, Peruzzi etc.

Didn't the Roma hierarchy say that Mourinho's only job this season was to consolidate and build, and I gather that they didn't even put pressure on him to finish in the top 4. It's a still a hugely demanding job in terms of expectations from crazy fans, wall to wall media coverage and intrusion etc. in the city. But the fact that he has been left to get on with his job without specific targets re finishing into the top 4, challenging for the Scudetto etc., must have helped a lot.

Every time I see this clip, blood boils. He should’ve been sacked there and then on the spot. Edit: I was actually thinking of the one straight after Sevilla one which was worse. He’s still a bellend in this one mind

i don't know how else to describe this thread.
he failed with united miserably. the team was in freefall. he failed absolutely with spurs, the team was in freefall. with roma he's had an above-average season on the back of massive investment.
and you open the thread, and it's all about how he was right, comparing him with pep/klopp, would have got his spurs to beat city, "never said a bad word about us", etc. i thought this delusion ended after his spell with spurs.

Weird cult, like I said at lest Chelsea fans doing this makes lot of sense as he is Chelsea legend, won 2 PL titles and had lot of history with them.

3 actually, but yes, it's bizarre. Kind of reminds me of the cult surrounding Trump, where people love and support him despite him behaving like a brazen, bullying, narcissistic dickhead who clearly couldn't give two shits about them.

Woulda coulda shoulda
He was fired because he was not good enough. Results showed this with Conte.
He is a park-the-bus manager, not ideal for clubs with normal attacking mentality that chase league titles and not a league cup or a 3rd division European title like conference.

He should have been sacked no doubt. But should have been sacked after the final and not before that.

Sorry it wasn't terribly clear.

I can't understand how Jose is being described as a nobody despite being the last man to win us trophies (will be minimum 6 years by next summer)

At ManUtd he is a noboday, just like Van Gaal and Moyes.

At Roma he isn't.

Yeah 3. Typo mistake.

Last few pages are just

Mourinho downed tools?! That’s news to me, and I say that as someone who watched every game that season up to that meaningless but symbolic 2-1 loss to Valencia when a win would have seen us top the league. He tried his best, but players like Shaw, Pogba, Martial and Rashford who he has been proven right about now let him down and downed tools themselves.
From all the behind the scenes stories that came out at the time, it was pretty clear Mourinho had given up. He behaved horribly on the pre season tour in America. He threw a tantrum in a hotel lobby at like 2am when he was told by Woodward he wasn't going to get a centre back. Disrespected the young lads we took. The mood was just absolutely toxic around the club.

Agree, i find myself spending less and less time on this forum because i always leave getting wound up by all the constant arguing everywhere. I just wanted to congratulate him on winning the final but seems i can't do that without being labeled a "cultist".

I wasn't a particularly big fan of Jose, i didn't like his football but i respect him for the trophies he won here. That being said i didn't like how he talked about us sometimes and at the time i didn't like how he treated some of the players but the last few years have shown he might of had a point about them.

Fans respect him for those two trophies but let's not pretend like he wasn't a disappointment. Mourinho wasn't hired to win us a Europa League and League Cup. He was hired to take us back to the top and deliver a league title.

We knew what we were getting in Mourinho. We knew it would most likely end in tears and we would be in a bit of a mess but we thought it would be worth it if he delivered major silverware. He failed at that.

Imagine the Mourinho at Chelsea seeing what he's turned into - crying at winning a made up Europa trophy for teams that can't reach the main competitions

He'd have been disgusted with himself.

He was a disappointment. He failed to deliver the PL or CL. His third season was a clusterfeck. But he won us two trophies. Until ETH wins something Jose is going to be the most successful after SAF retired. Which isn't saying much.

This trophy doesn’t count, it isn’t an «European title», it’s a cup created to give some minnows from Norway, Bulgaria and Albania some sort of international fun and income. Him celebrating like it’s 2010 and it being «legacy» is just very sad for him; after an otherwise disasterous season with Roma where they failed in the league and failed in the Europa League - which indeed is a European title to brag about for a club such as Roma.

Bit harsh to say he failed in the Europa League considering they didn’t compete in it.
Really weird post all around, they won a European Trophy, we’ve won nothing for five years, let them enjoy it.

 That's a good one.
This is also sad from a United view. Spurs have finished in the Top4 more times (5) than United (3) in the last 7 years. We have had 4 managers (including Ragnick) during that time. Ole can be blamed for a lot of things but he really got us decent league finishes and semi-final / final appearances. Not excusing him by the way, it was clear we were not going to ever win a major trophy under him.

Manager who won stuff in club is not nobody for that club. That is just not true.
Especially in his case because by winning EL we became one of only 5 clubs in Europe who have all Uefa competions.
Trophies make club great. That is the truth. Yes, we can talk about way of play, tradition, history, youth development, fans etc...but at the end, number of trophies divide clubs. Ffs, we all "supported" bloody City this year just to stay at top in PL titles. And we all were scared of Pool's quadruple.
When Liverpool United comparism starts (who is bigger club) then all trophies are counted including Fa cup, LC, World super cup etc....

You like the fact that we are the only one who won treble, right? You know that in that treble is "minor" FA cup?

All the fluff piece, trophies are great. When domestic cup is added to league title, it's awesome. League cup alone is ok season.

Yes, he is a nobody at this club, one more manager who spent shit loads of money but failed to win league title or even challenge for league title, and this was before City and Liverpool became super clubs that they are today.

I don't understand why this competition is being played down. Yeah if you're a huge club who have won titles and CL's in our lifetimes, then it may seem a little pointless but not every club has enjoyed a trophy filled successful period like the select few giant clubs at the top of the European pyramid.

I was just a child when Chelsea won the CWC but I was and still am damn proud of that achievement. It won't mean the same if Chelsea won the same competition in 2022 but in the 90's, well it was huge for us. Roma have won 3 trophies in 30 years. This is huge for them.

Shitcoat as he may be, he has always been a winner and a whiner all rolled into one.

He was celebrating like crazy when Spurs finished 6th. Yeah it's safe to say his standards have dropped in recent years.
