That was a hockey score. And he should've taken his players off the pitch because they defended poorly!

His words, not mine.

Think he'd do well in international tournaments where there is less emphasis on coaching. He can stink the place up and nick a 1-0 win on his way to a tournament win. He's done and has been done as a top level coach at club level though. The days of those kinds of managers are done and he simply wasn't able to reinvent himself/get with the times.

Even that does not work for him anymore. His teams are not great defensively.

To be fair, his options in defence are Davies, Aurier, Doherty, Sanchez, a washed Alderweireld and an average Dier.

I'd be depressed just looking at that.

Back to Portugal and one of the big 3.

Atletico Madrid is only major euro team left I can see him managing and even that is doubtful as Simeone is in no rush to move and they can make big push for champions league in next 18 months.

Not sure how long Santos has left on his Portugal contract but feels like time is right now for him to give that a go for a couple of tournaments given he's nearly 60 now.

How crazy is football, 2 months ago he was reborn and back as a master.

Now he's a deadman walking.

Truth be told he's been done for a fair while, his methods don't work anymore and I'm not convinced he can convince the modern footballer to be happy playing in such a way anymore.

I like the man but this is all so very predictable. He is done at the top level. I think Wolves might be his next job.

He will win the league cup, be in 6th or 7th place with about 4 games to go, bust up with Levy and leave the job. Then in the aftermath, he will claim to be one of Spurs’ greatest ever managers for bringing back a trophy. That league cup final is absolutely huge now for his own ego and brand.

He refuses to evolve with the game. Defensive football has been found out years ago.

The best way to be defensive now is to keep the ball, which City are doing. Keep the ball and the other teams can't hurt you. Jose doesn't like his teams doing that.

The standard of defenders has gone down over the past decade, and teams now put more emphasis on fullbacks attacking, so that's more players joining the attack which means it's going to be harder if you just content with being defensive and hitting teams on the counter.

Jose needs to adapt, I thought he would with us but he didn't and he certainly has not with Spurs. He doesn't have Terry, Carvalho, Lucio or Samuel. He needs to come up with a better plan because having your team absorbing pressure is not going to win the big trophies. It's why he's looked hopeless in the champions league the last few times he's been there. Against PSG who had 10 men, Atletico, Sevila and RB Leipzig he just set up defensively in all those games. I remember his peak, where didn't he smash Barca at home with both Chelsea and Inter. Now all he seems to be concerned with is sticking to his defensive masterclass persona.

I want to say they've been shit because the players have lost faith but even that doesn't seem to be the case.

Kane / Son are the stars of the team and their whole game is to play Son through, so Son's still bought in to the system it looks like. Keeps making those runs non-stop through out the game. Kane is a bit like Rooney - too professional a player to simply give up, I think he's still out there working for the team. Hojbjerg is his lieutenant and I think he's been doing well. Lamela too looks like he has a point to prove whenever he's given a chance.

It's hard to judge defenders but just from the eye test, Aurier is still showing the desire. Don't know about CBs / LB

Who else? If there are any coasters, it'd have to be between Sissoko, Winks, Ndombele, Bergwijn, Bale. (2x CM, 1x RW from that).

He refuses to evolve with the game. Defensive football has been found out years ago.

Simeone, Allegri and Conte have been very successful in this decade with defensive football. I don't believe thats the issue, the issue is Mourinho himself, who has bought into his own image where he can do no wrong, but everyone around him does. He's living in his past glory and therefor does nothing wrong since he was so successful, for him whats wrong is his personel, sporting director, lack of spending, players making mistakes, poor signings, etc. its nothing to do with his tactics, man management, calling his club out, calling players out in public he believes thats all perfect.

Loath as I am to urge City on to more domestic dominance I would love for Guardiola to absolutely dick him in the final. 5-0.

Why does Jose bother you now ? The guy is finished he can have his league cup, I hope they beat City.

Spurs’ goalkeeper is much more poorer than DDG has been over last two years, when the shoot comes from narrow angle.
Everton scored two from right side. He couldn’t save any. Basically same as DDG, staying on the line and hope they shoot directly onto him.

Are any of our resident Spurs fans still believers or are most waiting for him to go? I guess still in the top four race although not sure how much people care about the league cup - it's just the style that kills you.

This had disaster written on it from the start. When results don’t go his way, the only way he can possibly fix it is by spending and with all clubs hurting and Tottenham not typically being huge spenders, that’s not an option. If I was a Spurs fan I’d be praying to lose the league cup because he will ruin a squad that has a decent group of players given a transfer window with even a modest budget.

Is he intentionally playing to concede multiple goals now, so he can claim a victory against "open" football? I mean, it's more likely he's just lost it, but still..

This. And he will go hard in the Europa.

Spurs have City next. City are due a win against them, but they've been on a winning run and it would be most Spurs like to get something when no one expects them to.

Think it is the opposite. Teams are better defensively than they were a decade ago.
Modern teams make less unforced errors than in the past. This is Mourinho's nightmare. His football is all about the opponent making unforced errors. Without that, he's fecked because he will never take the risk of trying to force those errors for fear of his team making them.

From the stats of the game (missed the game), it seems he didn't play defensively (57% possession, 29 attempted shots 12 on target, etc...), he had Lamela, Moura, Berwijn & Son as his attackers, and Ndombele & Hojbjerg as his double pivot (this combination is not as defensive as the one that includes Sissoko instead of Ndombele), he also started Doherty, who's an attacking fullback.. so I would say this game Mourinho attempted to play positively, though its only FA cup which he might be willing to be open minded about, did he play like this in league?

“see I told you, it was better to defend, rather than all out attack”. You can see he’s readying his retort.

he’s actually pretty thin skinned, and can be pretty reactionary to the press.

I enjoy sticking it in as much as the next person but individual errors let him down more than anything last night. Probably be the end of attacking football for Mourinho at Spurs though, he's given it a try twice now and after the West Ham 3-3 game and now this I don't think he's likely to play risky again.

Spurs have won one trophy this millennium, the League Cup.

It’s been 30 years since they’ve won anything that isn’t the League Cup.

Mourinho is a League Cup specialist.

If Spurs beat City in the final you can’t really argue that on some level Mourinho won’t have delivered what they brought him in for. When you go with him you sell your soul for trophies. It sort of worked for us.

Or he done it knowing it will lead to a basketball game alas giving him a free excuse to justify playing as defensively as he pleases for the rest of the season. Even if they won he'd have likely pointed it to not being sustainable.

If he sets up like San Marino at The Ethiad and gets questioned about it he will now simply say "i tried it the other way and look what happened".
