Jose Fonte

IF we get Fonte, let's hope we're not up against someone with Zlatan in the box. Fonte looked like a junior.

I love the fact that like Sky said these leaks that we're interested was just to unsettle him... Jose has made us right orrible cnuts again

Puel questioned the timing of the rumours in his conference yesterday. When Mourinho was asked, he said "I don't care."

Got skinned by Martial as well.

Van Dijk looks more impressive right now, but for what we need and everything considered I can see why Fonte is being linked with us.

Don't see why we need him at all unless at least 2 are leaving tbh.

He's not that great and we have better depth at cb than most teams around.

Good to see this deal is still on, we will be glad of him during the African tournament

Fonte would be good quality depth, but I just don't see how you get adequate playing time to Smalling, Blind, Bailly, and Fonte. Throw in Jones and Rojo and clearly some of those players aren't in first team plans in the long run. None of those players will be happy being in the FA Cup / Euro squad on a regular basis.

Four CBs for two positions with Blind being also the first backup choice for the left back position. 50+ games per season, throw there the African Cup this year which means that Bailly misses a month or more during the season, consider our injuries, and I think that there are plenty of games for all four of them.

Rojo and Jones hopefully will get shifted. Rojo is shit with Jones even worse, and I don't think that Mourinho much likes them.

Rojo and Jones are rather poor. Not enough reason for not signing someone.

Didn't say don't sign Fonte.

Just said getting playing time for 6 CB's won't be easy.

So like I said. A one or two will probably look to be sold or marginalized to the point where a sale happens by the next summer transfer window.

I dont mind if Jones or particularly Rojo leave, but we should only sign Fonte if one of them does. I want TFM to also get some game time later in the season.

There's actually an English version at West Ham.

You mean A.Carroll? Carrol is not even close to what Ibra is.
And as a MUFC fan, I am actually offended by the comparison.

Agreed.

Chill out. I think he is making a joke as someone else actually did make that comparison.

Rojo should definitely be sold, I think we all agree on that. But Jones should not be moved on permanently. He's only 24, which is young for a CB, and has a ton of bad luck with injuries. I also don't care what anyone says, he's absolutely top quality on his day - and with a run of games over a couple of seasons, could become a beast. Maybe his body just isn't made for football, and he won't make it here; but it won't be because of a lack of talent or a lack of heart. I hope we send him on loan and he manages to get a full season in.

As for Fonte, I am all for signing him as a short term experienced CB. For my tastes, Smalling and Bailly cover for each other, and Blind and Fonte do the same. I'd be more than happy with any one of Smalling+Blind - Smalling+Fonte - Bailly+Blind - Bailly+Fonte. Smalling+Bailly just isn't good enough on the ball, and both attack the ball and could pose real problems. While Blind+Fonte is lacking too much pace.

Long term, we still need a world class centre-back, a world class defensive midfielder, and a world class striker.

It would be a massive statement if we sign Fonte. All the youngsters will know they've got zero game time to look forward to.

Actually no. If we buy Fonte we will probably get rid of either Jones and Rojo (hopefully both). Fonte has 1-2 good years of top quality football left in him. That means that someone like CBJ would be able to leave on loan knowing that he will return and fight for a first team place

Heart is all that Jones has. He has a lack of talent and has no business being in our team. Anderson MK2. Injuries are a big problem, on his 5 seasons here he has played only 5 more matches than Anderson did on his first 5 seasons here.

I actually think that Smalling + Bailly might work and will be our main partnership in the difficult matches, if not overall. Put Blind/Herrera or maybe even Carrick as DMF next to them, and we have the most athletic defense ever while also the DMF can spread the ball and compensate for Smalling's lack of ball skills. Bailly is okayish in the ball and both of them can be terrific defenders. Imagine those two in defense, with Fellaini and Pogba in midfield and Ibra in attack. We can physically destroy the other teams.

Valencia
Fosu-Mensah
Bailly
Smalling
Fonte
Blind
Shaw

Wouldn't surprise me if that's our defence after window closes. Could possibly do with another body though imo.

I don't think so, I'd say there is enough there, you've got to consider we've got u21's who can step up if needed.

Rojo will stay on as backup LB

Oh no you didn't...:nono:

You're the second person to have had a go about this. Suit yourselves then. Hopefully Fonte will find it much easier in aerial challenges with Carroll than he did with Zlatan. I somehow doubt it though.

Are you saying we should buy a defender who is over 6'5 just so he can out jump Andy Carroll?

No, I am saying that a statement that reads 'If we sign Fonte, I hope we are not up against someone like Zlatan in the box. He made him look like a junior', appears to forget that West Ham have one who can do the exact same thing that happened to him. Simple. If everyone wants to cry outrage, they clearly haven't seen Andy Carroll play before. He is not inferior to Zlatan in the air in any way. In fact, he's better.
