Jose Fonte

What are you talking about ? Ronny Johnsen was a brilliant defender who was a regular with Jaap Stam when United won the treble - unfortunately he was injured a lot. But he was a regular for 3 seasons - however due to his injuries - he only played about 75 matches in those 3 seasons.
I know he was a brilliant defender. That is what i am stating. I was comparing the stature of berg and johnsen before joining united to that of fonte to show that sometimes a cheap and non exciting signing can turn out to be a very good on. Ronny was very good and when he played he was solid and you never really had to worry about his performance, which might be same for fonte but is most definitely not same for rojo

I really can't see Soton wanting to go from having one of the world's most reliable / solid CBs in Fonte to one of the flakiest in Rojo".

Rojo is now considered a LB, he plays there at united and in the national team

We all, rightly, consider rojo an average player, but he is good rated by other clubs

Fonte could be the 4th CB, but without Rojo we don't have a LB back up.

As LB back up, on the market at this moment, there are availables Charlie Taylor and Andrew Robertson.
CBJ and Blind can be our LB backups.

With Fonte we would have 4 good CBs.

Real interest or not, never wrong to tap up one of the oppositions best players. Hope his head is elsewhere tomorrow.

Well I'd loan CBJ as he needs first team football. Blind and Darmian would be the cover LB options. Darmian and TFM can also cover RB, so we're well covered, even if we sell Rojo in terms of the full backs.

It's a Jose signing. A fill out that should be playing first team football. I think it's a good idea. Fonte is extremely good on corners in the opposition box.

You could call it gamesmanship but I think we should have more class than that. We've the World's most expensive player making his debut that night, I don't think we should need to try distract a much smaller team's captain before they come here.

Mourinho's response to Puel questioning us leaking these stories to the press?

Mourinho was also asked about Southampton's issues re timing of Jose Fonte speculation. "I don't care," he replied.

So? Why should he?

 great response

Hopefully he says the same when Wenger tries his mind games before our match. We don't need him getting tangled up in B level feuds

Just in relation to Fonte talking about us. Puel has accused us of instigating this by leaking rumours to the press with the intention of distracting the player in an attempt to destabilize Southampton before we play them.

Does that sound like something Josè would do? Quite frankly it does to me, although he often repeats that he doesn't want to speak about other club's players when asked in press conferences etc.
Yes it does. He is the Prince of the dark arts.

If he's available for the £8 million as speculated, he'd be a great signing in the short term. Slap bang in the middle of his prime, in the form of his life and cheap. Well worth a pinch.

Love it!

Imagine the headlines.

"Jose says Jose says he wants to join United..."

I think our interest is real.

There's no evidence that United had any part in the reports. They're linked to a ridiculous number of players every transfer window and rarely comment on any of them. This is no different and the fact Everton were also named as being interested in the same reports suggests there's no leak from United.

You seem to be twisting things to fit your agenda. He was asked how he'd feel if one of his players was linked to another club before United play them and he said, "I don't comment on Fonte" - as in he's not said anything about Fonte to the press and he's still not. "I don't care" - if the same happens with one of his players. "The market is open but I keep saying I'm happy with who I have" - suggesting he's open to making changes but not too concerned about it.

i "think" we will sign him, the game we are playing is we dont need him that much and he doesnt want to stay with you. Its a position of strength we are showing for negotiation. I also think we will sign him even if we dont sell a defender. This should move forward after our game. Fonte i think will not play tomorrow.

Much better.

Even makes average defenders like Lovren look good around him.
He does play for a second rate team though, you see "good" players turn average when they move to a big club. If it happens it will be interesting to see if he can cut it. I remember a lot of people talking up Lovren before he moved to scouse world.

On the other hand Alderweireld looked a much better player last season when he wasn't playing with Fonte.

There's so many other factors involved, I don't think anyone can give a centre back credit for the other centre backs performances.

When. Lovren moved from Lyon to Southampton ,they really couldn't believe their luck.

That he was actually decent enough to earn a move to Liverpool is amazing. Other than that he has been generally abysmal.

Good read this.

How Liverpool got duped into that one is just Liverpool being Liverpool.

We need a experienced centre back, I hope we sign him. Was very impressed by him in the Euros.
