Jorge Mendes and Wolverhampton Wanderers

Just saw yesterday that Wolves spent 15.8M pounds on Rúben Neves from FC Porto which seems insane for a second division team. Looked into it a bit more and in the past year they've spent a combined 20M on Ivan Cavaleiro and Hélder Costa, as well Sílvio and João Teixeira having spells at the club. The former Valencia and Porto coach Nuno has also been appointed manager. Of course, all of these names are linked to Jorge Mendes who has a stake in the Chinese company which owns WWFC.

With this kind of outlay, are Wolves going to dominate the Championship or are they overpaying for average players to help line Mendes's pockets? Personally, I'd love to see them back in the Premier League.

Mendes has had a previous similar setup at Deportivo La Coruña - where he took the small talents (who didnt for at Porto for example) and had a frequent taker in Depor who was strapped for money, but could develop them.

Its sort of a similar setup this albeit a bit more expensive now than 10 years ago.

I think its just good business for him to have a solid partner in which he can generate some win/win and create some steady/safe income. Its an easy channel to ship a player to and England's got money. He's not Raiola who has few clients and ships them for gigantic fees.

Compared to how pressured Deportivo was with their economy it went quite well for them considering that it would probably be worse without Mendes - but it didnt take them back to the old heights or create a lot of superstars. Not sure they are Mendes clients but Filipe Luis and Andres Guardado made the step up and was sold.

Moutinho is shit but can't complain getting that kind of experience for £5m these days.

Think it's with Mendes.

There is Mendes too but I'm pretty sure that there is something with Moutinho. IIRC the move didn't went well from Sporting's side, he was the captain.

You are not realizing one thing: he's going to Wolves, not for a EPL title contender. He's more than good enough for a lower midtable EPL club.

I'm simply describing him, I did not qualify the move.

Doesn’t what you’ve said apply to every agent? If their player stops performing and gets benched it’s their job to move him on. I could understand if you’re saying we had to move on a top performer solely because of him. But we can’t kid ourselves we’re Wolves, players like Neves will leave if we don’t continue to grow as there’s plenty of big teams and that won’t be down solely to Mendes. I think it’s a good model bringing in youngsters and moving them on for profit.

As for controlling the dressing room. We’ve 6 Mendes clients, two are subs and ones only signed. People really overestimate his influences. Time will tell if it goes well or not but it’s exciting times as a Wolves fan.
It is. I get to see 4-5 games a season living just outside Wolverhampton. I think top 8 easily

I don't think anyone said otherwise. I'm sure he'll start at first for them, but whether he keeps his place in the first XI time will tell. He'll certainly be a fantastic tactical option whatever happens and his experience in the squad will be an asset too.

Mendes has a way to make deals with clubs: he makes it easier for them to sign their customers, in exchange he makes some partnership contracts where he will bring some young prospects to the club and see where they go. Off course both clubs and Mendes are aware that most of those youngsters will flop, it's a natural thing.

But in the middle of those "low cost" young players, which are usually players who were appointed as emerging talents, some of them step up and become good hiring.

But clubs have to remember: for every Ederson Moraes, there's two or three Roberto's :D

I hope they get relegated.
Money speaks over prestige these days and history a guy who would have been the player with the most appearances ever for a historical club like Sporting leaves for the money of a relegation club ( with all due respect to wolves).

No player in todays football will say no to play abroad even if they go to clubs who are going to battle relegations, this happens in Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands and even France.

There are clubs in the Championship who pay more than top clubs in Portugal. Better stop with this nonsense players with minimal quality will want to play there for the rest of his life, they are professionals not fans.

Regardless of that I hope Cintra defends our rights and puts Patricio and Podence case in FIFA. Jorge Mendes is scum, but untill the day he is found out I suspect he will do whatever he wants.

Regarding Moutinho I don't know if it is confirmed but if he goes there he will be a good "teacher" for Neves. Hopefully this move doesn't imply we still have to face more 2 years of him starting for Portugal, time to move on from some Santos fetiches.

If Wolves wants to be part of the Jorge Mendes washing machine its their problem, they will not be the first club and not the last to do that. Nottingham Forest is the " New Kid on the Block" in England on Mendes Network.

Can see Wolves finishing 8th or 9th, they will be nowhere near relegation zone.

Not trying to be an arse about it, but how bout trying to have a kid and trying to provide for your family and make sure they live decently, you'll see how the "money talks" argument begins to make sense.

Money will always go first when choosing clubs, just like family is first in everything. Football is a passion, a sport, but first of all you need to let go to so much things to make it as a football player, a few of those things being school, education, teenage fun and so on.

But first, football needs to be a job, you still need to provide for your family and make sure you have a decent amount of money when you finish your career. What happens when you're an average player with an average paycheck and you can't play anymore, what do you do? It's not like going to University at 20 when education is easier to take in.

If you're, let's say, 30 and see the end of your career you will go for the money, not the love of your historical club. That's a grown up decision for a grown up guy.

Love Mendes. Great signing, Pepe next please

30 is still young in my eyes you have 6 years of football left in you and if your a goalie like the case of Rui you can still have 8 to 10 years left in you. Though I understand what you mean it depends on the player and circumstances in terms of Rui he was more then set at Sporting his kids and family were well taken care of but his legacy as a player is dented now its not like he went to a top club. Like I said for certain circumstances I understand. Like I said 30 is by no means old in my eyes depending on the quality of the player.

Is anyone in FIFA or the FA paying close attention to this or are they just happily sweeping it under the carpet?

It is. I get to see 4-5 games a season living just outside Wolverhampton. I think top 8 easily

Top 8 "easily"? That's a pretty big ask considering 6 of those 8 are Man City, Man Utd, Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea.

If you get top 8 (big if, IMO) then it certainly won't be easily. That puts you in and around the likes of Everton, West Ham, Leicester. Plus then there's the likes of Watford, Newcastle etc.

Anything above 15 would be an excellent season.

They probably won’t be a top 8 team, I very much doubt they are that good. It could become similar to West Ham 2006-07 etc., a club brings several big names and are expected to do very well but it doesn’t work out.

How come no bigger club has signed Neves yet?
Because he doesn´t seem to be stupid, want¨na continue his development in a club which will give him plenty of time next season, he just got there too.

I think Wolves will do very well to stay up and attack top 10 next season. Moutinho is a great signing from them, very reliable player

Surprised Nuno hasn't been found out in England yet. His tactics left a lot to be desired. But more importantly, he lacked charisma to handle the dressing room and fans.

They played some really good football last season, albeit in the championship, so unlike West Ham they seem to have an identity rather than just throwing money about on any semi significant name that becomes available. Got a decent core of young players (Helder Costa, Neves, Jota etc) who will be hungry and eager to impress on the biggest stage, as well as a few solid experienced players like Moutinho and Patricio who are definitely good enough to be in top 8 sides. The Portuguese core to their side could be really useful too under Nuno, theoretically all the new signings should settle in pretty quickly.

To me I think a top 8 challenge is managable with that squad. I think they'll outplay most sides in the league but probably won't be good enough defensively to finish any higher, they need Jimenez to settle and be a success too because otherwise their striker options are pretty poor, do not back Bonatini to do it in the Premier League. They managed 99 points in a pretty strong championship last season and at one point were absolutely steamrollering it, so I'd be surprised if they were any lower than mid-table. Of course, anything could happen..

He got found out in a couple of games last season, against Fulham and Villa most notably, but I think his team just had too much of an advantage in terms of quality over nearly everyone they played. With the new signings I expect them to do pretty well against a lot of the fodder and continue to play attractive football, but I can see some pastings being handed out against some of the biggest sides. I don't think he's needed much in the way of charisma due to the quality gap, as long as they're winning they are happy, and the fans are going to be delighted regardless with how much they've stepped up in recent years.

Any limitations he has could be exposed in the Premier League though, but I do think he will do pretty well. I don't think most managers in the league are that tactically great, to be honest.
