Jonny Evans - Off in January

His injury record at United was horrendous, about on a par with Jones, but he seems to have been fairly injury free since going to WBA. Is this down to physio/training methods or maybe just the sign of a player who can't handle being at a big club and this manifests itself in injuries that more than likely come from tension in the mind and body.

Jonny will turn 30 two weeks later, his best years wont last long. So a no, but should never leave us though

Nah. You only bring back a former player if they're an exceptional talent, a la Pogba. Evans is not at all the answer and is not better than anyone we already have in what is a well stocked position. You don't strengthen well stocked positions, adding a 7th centre back to a pool of 6, in January. That would be lunacy.

Was never a big fan of him anyway. He's done well at West Brom. I don't think he's a top 4 player though. If we are buying defenders it just has to be a full back

I hope he goes to city. Proved he wasn’t united level time and time again.

He is not our level, despite playing for our championship winning sides for seven years, & a target for Man City, & Arsenal, Liverpool by all accounts. All below our level it seems.

It's really hilarious how there are people actually arguing we should buy another CB. Our attack is shite and we're well stocked in defence, but hey who cares about logic? Evans used to play for us so let's bring him back!

Always liked Evans, his ability on the ball was always massively underrated. There are other areas we need to address first imo, but he might be available relatively cheaply now it is known he wants to leave. He could come in and do a job for 2-3 seasons. We have numbers at centre back, but we seriously lack quality. Smalling and Rojo aren't good enough. Jones is good but unreliable due to injury. Bailly is starting to pick up more and more injuries plus he's still very raw at times. Lindeloff is alright, starting to look better. The younger lads, Jose doesn't seem to want to try them for whatever reason. If Evans came to Utd I'd be happy, if he didn't, no big deal we try and focus on the areas we need to strengthen in. I've said it before on here, if all we got in Jan was 1 genuine quality attacking full back. It would make a hell of a difference. Lukaku for all his weaknesses and he has many, is very good at attacking crosses, give him regular good crosses and he'll score.

How did you come to that conclusion?

I don’t want him back but I hope he doesn’t go to Liverpool.

Yeh I agree with people saying they would take him back. He’d be 7th choice CB which for a club of our size is a must. Also he’s premier league proven, British, and he’s a ‘proper’ Utd player. Also forgot to say he’s a red through and through. Basically sign him up and our creative problems in a attack will be like a bad dream.

He's a ship that's sailed. I liked the guy when he was in good form before SAF left but he would be useless now.

He was worse in 14/15 than Darmian ever was for us. He was poor even vs mk dons that season

We've got 4 or 5 quality center backs and the best defence in the league. No need.

It would be a major backwards step to sign him. Literally the only reason anyone is interested is because he used to play for us.

If Dejan Lovren was available for the same price, would anyone be interested?

Laughed a guy off in another thread as he was insisting we need more quality at Cb and sign David Luiz.

Now this.

Beggers belief how absolutely clueless some fans are. How many CB's do we need? We currently have Rojo, Smalling, Jones, Bailly, Lindelof, Blind, Tuanzebe, TFM to return. So yeah we should rush out and sign another one straight away.

Sod the lack of full backs, lack of depth in CM and no natural RW.

Johnny Evans, if he came back, I would play every CB we currently have on the books ahead of him, even Blind. So he'd be 7th/8th choice.

No thanks, he's hilariously overrated on this place like many ex-United players.

BBC Article

I'd take him back. Lindeloff despite being on a good run recently has been largely disappointing so wouldn't rely on him for the entire season. Baily is injured. Jones is always a few games away from injury. Leaves you with rojo and Smalling. He'd walk into our first team to I think, currently.

If not us, it'll be one of City or arsenal.
Largely disappointing.....feck sake

Was ok with either Vidic or Rio to hold his hand. Found wanting when had the chance to step up as senior CB. Been less injury prone at WBA than when he was here but then fewer matches and less intensity in a middling side.

Really can't see why. given our current squad make up, we would shell out the suggested fee of £30 million for another Centre Back. We have Smalling, Jones, Rojo, Bailly, Lindelof plus Blind and Tuanzebe. It's our resources at Fullback. Centre Midfield and on the Wing require attention.

We don't need him. We don't need any CB at the moment anyway.

Agree he's somewhat overrated here. He did a good job previously here at some moments during injuries, but by no means he's as great as some here think him as. He deserved to leave at the time he left, one of the few players I don't blame LVG for selling him, just like Welbeck.

Wanting to bin a 22 year old £35 million signing in favor of a 30 year old Jonny Evans who was shipped out after putting in one of the most shambolic season for a CB and that too under LVG's ultra defensive possession football. This place is nuts, there was a poster wanting us to sign David Luiz and now this

An obviousky talented 22 year old who just fecking got here.

Ah yes. We do love a centre back. As I often say 'You can't have too many centre backs.'

Agreed, his decline was dramatic that season. He was arguably our best CB the season before and he turned to absolute trash that season. Very few at the time complained about selling him and, if anything, most were surprised that we even got £6-8m in transfer fee for him.

He was Redcaf 'escape goat' of the year then. Probably along with Fellaini.

I'm not so sure he was. Evans was really poor in LVG's first season where we markedly improved as a team compared to the previous season under Moyes, but Evans' level went down considerably.

Man City only want him to fill their home grown quota. They would be better off going for a younger defender like one of the Burnley centre backs, Mee or Tarkowski, maybe even Mawson at Swansea would be a better option.

He played regularly for the first team at United for 7 years. I would imagine a player that couldn't handle the pressure of playing for United wouldn't have lasted the best part of a decade.
131 appearances over seven seasons = < 19 games per season. Not that regular.

He was generally decent when he was next to Vidic or, to a lesser extent, Rio. Once they'd moved on he was awful. He moved to West Brom and immediately went back to being decent. It's not unreasonable to infer from this that he couldn't handle the pressure at United when he wasn't having his hand held.

It wouldn't help City in CL as the 4 men quota for non club trained HG players is already fulfilled.

Why only his league appearances?

Yeah lets just shave almost 70 games off his United career. No one will notice and it will suit my argument.

He actually made 195 appearances over 7 seasons. Averaging 27-28 games per season for a team that plays 50+ games is pretty fecking regular yes.

Its a pretty big leap in logic. You can hold the opinion that he played better with Vidic and Rio than he did without. But what defender wouldnt? Its stating the fecking obvious.

But its nonsense to suggest a player that played for Man Utd under Alex Ferguson for five years, winning multiple titles and playing in many high intensity games couldnt handle the pressure of playing for Man Utd.

Nonsense.

He's playing in a team that hasn't won for 4 months and people want him back ffs

Any defender can look good in a deep lying defence, just look at Micheal Keane, everybody went crazy over him last year and he's been bang average again this time.

He is easily as good as any of your centre backs imo. He has been superb since he left utd and found his fitness again.

And James Tarkowski - another otherwise average-to-decent at best CB - has easily replaced him and is getting huge plaudits this season so far.

I agree, people don't seem to grasp that defending in a low-block system is much easier. You don't have to worry about runners in behind you, you don't have to defend as much space and you don't have to continually re-adjust your defensive line height, basically you just need to be strong in the air, hack any loose balls away and get in front of any shots from around the D.

Put Evans in a high-line and I'm almost positive he'll conveniently go back to looking like West Brom was his level.

This is aside from the fact that if we're talking about a prospective transfer to United here, they have 6/7 capable CB's on the books already and could do with splashing £30m in far more pressing areas of need.
