You can imagine the conversation in the summer "Yeah Jonny, we'd love to extend your contract for another year but you're a year older and we're gonna sign three defenders so don't expect many minutes, yeah? It'll just be great to have your experience around the place"

Cut to January 2025 and Evans has started the last 20 odd games in a row at left back, somehow won the November and December player of the month awards. Felt fresh. Came out of international retirement. Scored the winner at the Etihad. Luke Shaw is still "making good progress".

Not sure he has enough speed to play at left back, but did well today

Man Utd 7:0 Barnsley New
Very good today, helped Collyer in the first half as well.

I just like Jonny Evans being around. Solid in most of the games he's played since coming back to club and also reminds me of Fergie days. Will turn 37 next year so will possibly retire but would be great if he can stay at club in some role.

I saw him in Altrincham over the weekend; I’m surprised how tall he is.

FC Porto 3:3 Man Utd New
He showed some serious pace last night at one point running half the pitch quicker than I’ve ever seen him go.

I think he’s our best left sided centre back at the moment, been very solid for us since signing. That might change if he plays a lot of games due to his age but I think he’s been great. Shame he was so injury prone back when he was younger with us.

You wonder if it might not be a good time to give him a start - let him bring some veteran leadership and a calm head to proceedings.

De Ligt would benefit from playing next to him.

It's kind of weird but I think he's the most composed, confident player in the squad.

Aston Villa 0:0 Man Utd New
Whether he starts or is coming off the bench, I never ever worry about Jonny Evans playing for us.

What a feckin hero.

Him and Maguire should be the partnership starting under a new guy.

Yeah. A very smart CB. You can sub in or slot him with any partner, he'd just do the job.

Makes it look like the rest of the squad is on performance reducing drugs.

Terrific performance. A winner with a mentality other players could benefit from.

De Ligt would benefit from playing next to him.

It's kind of weird but I think he's the most composed, confident player in the squad.

I think as is that's probably our best pairing. Both take responsibility, de Ligt loves to push up and win the ball which he does a lot, Evans stays back, they work. But they work in a low block.

I love him. Not sure how many games he can play in a row but I wouldn't mind seeing him next to De Ligt for a few games until Yoro comes back/Martinez rediscovers his form.

Played great and fits perfectly when the focus is defending and not constructive play from the back.

I know he'll hardly play, but make him captain. He gets it. He's an outstanding professional. The best suited in the team by a thousand miles.

Who decided to sell Jonny Evans.
What a fecking player.
Did absolutely nothing wrong last year. Was quality today.

You can’t help but like Jonny , gives his all every time. Great game from him today.

He’s our best centre back. I mean, probably? A 36 year old player we got rid of NINE years ago.

And how much have we spent trying (and failing) to upgrade him over that period of time? Sums up what a diabolically run club we are.

Yep. We should never have gotten rid of him in the first place. Shocking state of affairs really that he's often the standout performer when he plays, at 36 years old on a free.

Commented last season that he's our best centre back. Rarely makes any mistakes, fairly composed on the ball and is a warrior. Probably can't play every game but he deserves to based on performances. Class.

Every defender at United should be embarrassed that Evans, who wasn't even meant to sign for us until doing a bit in training last summer, is putting in better performances than the lot of em. Compared to some of what Martinez has done lately, Evans looked like Franco Baresi.
