Jonny Evans | 2011/12 Performances

Turning into the Carrick of the centre back pairing if that makes sense.

Yup. If we can keep Vidic fit and allow these two to play together every week then we'll reap the rewards defensively, for the most part - garbage midfield fecking us over being the eventual downfall when we do concede.

He's good but feck me he's annoying when he puts his hands out in from of him as though to say "come on, who wants the ball then" when he's in possession asking players to move. He does it as soon as he gets the ball. It is something which is probably good but christ it's annoying.

He's like a Rio-Vidic hybrid. Class and composure bringing the ball out and driving the team forward, mixed with the determination to fight for everything and put his body on the line. He's great.

Is there any doubt that he is our best defender? I love him, great player.

I thought for a second I was in the Rio thread until I looked at the title
Anyways, he's become a very good player, I wouldn't put him above Vidic yet though. Vidic has been off form this season but showed last season how much of a difference he makes. He organizes the rest of the defence so we look better as a whole and is a leader, something Evans doesn't do yet. Evans is first choice though, along with Vidic. We should start them every time they're fit because they compliment each other well.

Perhaps, Vidic's inability on the ball has been really annoying me this year. In contrast, Evans is great with it, if the midfielders aren't offering for the ball he'll advance with it and find a pass, I'm really valuing that particular quality at the moment. He did it today the pulled of a little back heel at the end of it, which was in the build up to the corner that we scored from.

Pure defending, probably. In terms of overall contribution to the team, no.

That's not the question you asked, but fair enough. I still disagree though. Evans is a better passer of the ball and more comfortable in possession, but Vidic is superior in every other way. His distribution is underrated too.

That's the question I meant really.

Vidic's distribution is poor IMO.

It is annoying. The rest of the team needs to look for the ball more often.

Ok no worries. It isn't as good as Evans, but its underrated all the same. Its not poor though, he isn't Robert Huth!

The lack of midfield can't be helping, he was better in Scholes' time, but there's a vast difference between him and Evans on the ball IMO.

He's got a point when he does that to be fair, nobody else opens themselves up to receive a pass and Evans isn't the the type of player who doesn't need a second invitation to boot it forward like most of our other center backs.

It is annoying but it shows how frustrating our problems can be. evans was just highlighting that by exhibiting the fact that there are no good passing options

Without a doubt the stupidest criticism of a player I've ever heard.

Also, thought the way he pressured the guy who was through on goal in the first half, he didn't get his challenge in but he did just enough. He made up the ground so quickly and if that went in, it could be a very different mood around the place now.

Aren't you constantly doing similarly annoying gesticulating while watching the bunch of lamposts which are options for a pass? Good on him, since when is it a bad thing to give your teammates a piece of your mind?

Evans, despite our poor spell, is looking very assured, and is the club's number one centre back now. The sooner we give Smalling a run next to him, the better. There are no benefits to playing Ferdinand. And whilst Vidic's form is reasonable, the fact he can't play multiple games in succession is causing disruption. Sad as it is, I think we should look at phasing Rio and Vida out.

It's not a criticism, it's just something little that annoys the hell out of me. He'll do it even if he has loads of options anyway. Watch closely next time he gets the ball and then come back to me with a grovelling apology.

It's stupid.

Someone here was calling him out once for having the audacity to tell others where to be at a set piece once too. I swear some people don't get football.

Loved his back-heel in the 2nd half when he drove forward, saw nothing on and just dumped it backwards.

Should be the first defender on the team sheet.

Vidic and Rio's decided they're not up for it anymore.

Vidic shirks away from responsibility on the ball, in turn leaving us unable to play out from the back, while Ferdinand's done and still thinks he can get away with casually strolling about the pitch the entire time.

In whoscored's Best XI for CL Group Stages

Nice! What do those numbers represent, are they an average of something or just an arbitrary award from Whoscored?

Agree with what's been said previously. Teamsheet should always be Evans + ?, with ? being whoever is fittest and in the best form. Vidic needs to up his game.

Yeh, nothing really in it but it's nice to see he is starting to gain the recognition from people outside of the club that we have been calling out for years for.

I think so. But yeh, still not as much as he deserves though.

I really don't think he's that highly rated from non-united fans/journos.
I think he's class personally but definitely not getting much in the way of praise.

Maybe not highly rated but compared to what fans did think of him, even United fans he really has come on so much.

I agree with his ability and have since the first game I saw him play live, he just had everything for me and I'm glad pretty much all United fans recognize this now.

So in terms of opposition fans and the media, you're right, it might not be praise he is getting but he is no longer the kid who has no chance at making the grade.

I think that it is hard for any of our defenders to get recognition at the moment as results are so bad. A lot of City fans that I talk to think that Jones, Smalling and Evans are all sub standard and that Vidic and Ferdinand are past it. I constantly hear that Jones and Smalling should be nowhere near the England squad.

Having said that, one City fan I know (and like) claims that Rio Ferdinand is a complete fraud and that he has 'stolen a living'. Totally bizarre.

Jones hasn't been played at CB many times so that assumption is reasonable because rival fans probably haven't seen him play there much. I'm guessing the Smalling view comes from seeing him be utter shit at RB. Vidic has certainly loss a yard of pace this season, he's certainly not close to the absolute brick wall that we're used to seeing at CB. And Ferdinand is definitely past it. I think the view that Jones shouldn't be in the England squad also comes from the fact that he hasn't played many games at CB, and as such, it's a reasonable view.

Agreed, he was terrible against Newcastle(Vidic). I've never seen such dallying on the ball before, he would take ages to suss out what to do then just pass it sideways to Evans, when he could have done that 30 seconds ago. And that was when we were 0-1 down and running out of time.
