Jonny Evans | 2011/12 Performances

 Just had a wee look in the MOTM thread and despite Evans being head and shoulders our best player on Saturday 5/37 don't rate him enough to even mention him in the top three.

Maybe its because he clearly wasn't "head and shoulders our best player" on the day. Its arguable whether he was our best central defender. Januzaj, Rooney and De Gea were all clearly better on the day, and others arguably too. Your blatant adoration and blinkered view of Evans tends to lend less weight to your argument.

Jones was good, but it was in no way debatable if he was as good as Evans on the day. That for me is displaying much more of a blinkered pro-Jones/anti-Evans view than anything I posted.

Rooney wasn't great, Januzaj despite a few good passes didn't do much. What did DeGea do that was deserving of special recognition?

Did you watch the video MoneyMay made?

Rooney was laughably bad.

Its all subjective, we won't agree. My issue is you stating that Jonny was head and shoulders the best player on our team...I think that sums up how you frequently overrate his contribution, particularly when he has had a less than spectacular afternoon.

Fine player he is, I would never question that of course.

Rooney was laughably bad.

Was he? Fellaini might fall into that bracket...Rooney's touch was off (as it frequently can be) but he was clearly at the heart of everything, and trying to force the issue. Last season he would have just mooched around the pitch like a sunday league pisshead dying to get to the bar for post match sauce.

He wasn't at the heart of everything. He messed too many things he got to the heart of. He was very poor. Obviously not nearly as bad as Fellaini who looked like a lost teenager.

Apart from Lallana and Schneiderlin, Evans was the best player on the pitch for at least 85 minutes.

If you couldn't see that you need your eyes testing.

Deary me.

What? I had made a statement earlier, I went a looked a bit further and found what I had said was at least in part wrong and posted it here.

You made a statement saying Rooney was one of at least three players better than Evans on Saturday despite the fact that pretty much everyone else said Rooney was pretty poor. You were clearly wrong and yet you won't back down.

It's not a sign of weakness you know. Sometimes we all make mistakes.

Jesus wept Irwin. Its never about who is right or wrong, its all a matter of opinion. Sometimes an opinion is fairly extreme and it warrants questioning, and I felt yours did. You overrate Evans contribution on a frequent basis, to the point where you make OTT suggestions like the one you did. If you look at a good deal of the media based match ratings you will find a lot of observers don't agree Evans was the standout performer in the United side, and I agree. Perhaps Rooney wasn't as good but I don't think he was any worse, neither was Jones, Van Persie, Januzaj, De Gea, Carrick or Rafael. I questioned your statement, you didn't like it, hence you then try to spin the argument back onto me. Its childish man.

Let's just go back to the root...Jonny simply wasn't "head and shoulders above" every United player. He just wasn't. I don't feel I could ever get an objective view from you on the player.

I do have to laugh at people's lack of understanding of the modern 3-5-2, it is extremely interchangeable. You are always defending with a flat 4 pretty much, so forget about numbers at the back. If the 3 centre backs can play, there is no issue with width as the wingbacks provide that higher up the pitch.

There are obvious issues but teams are showing that it can work when played the right way with the right personnel.

The compilation of the match against Southampton is brilliant. I think he is our best defender now.

Its a nice video to watch but they only ever tell part of the story. For all his undoubted quality he messed up for Southampton's equalizer. If it was Vidic defending that box I would bet my money on him getting his head to the ball and clearing the danger. You only need to look how many times he repelled Shaktar at the Donbass. Vidic may not be better with the ball at his feet (although by no means a mug) but when it comes to defending a box, particularly in the last moments of a game, there is nobody I would trust more.

He's a better defender than Jonny Evans, not as silky with the ball, but still a superior defender no doubt.

Vidic, one of the worlds best cbs for a while, is better in the box, whereas Evans is better at playing the ball. Ironically, Vidic cost us a couple of goals just lately, and ironically, in Evans last two games we've failed to dominate two lesser teams at home.

Still Evans was very, very good against Southampton, and certainly looks nailed-on to be a mainstay this season.

He is so ambidextrous, stunning considering he's a defender.

Can't believe he was left out for so long. I'm sure we'd have a few more points if he played regularly. It's not just his defending, his distribution is fantastic too.

I thought it would be him and Smalling, but this partnership really has legs.

I wasn't blown away by him today, he wasn't on the ball as much as the weekend which is a good thing, but he did everything really well. Our best defender.

His passing is sublime. I think Jones bailed him out a couple of times today though, but isn't that why they are two? Overall, it's a very good partnership. Look at how high our defence was on the pitch today, and the way Jones outpaced Varela  (Rio and Vidic would not have done that, methinks)
