He's been very good at Lens but has had a complete mare trying to fit into the french squad, so not sure how he would fare at the highest level.

As a right back I don't think so. He isn't significantly better and Dalot is only 23.
We need a Azpi replacement as Reece James’s backup.

Are you having a mare? Doesn't look better than Dalot? Lad has had 11 assists in a single season as a RWB. Just because he plays RWB doesn't mean he can't play as a RB. Walker can play as a RWB and as RB. James Reece can play as a RWB and a RB. Fullbacks arent that rigid. Also looking at his defensive stats, which are also incredible, it doesn't look like he'd struggle to play as a pure RB.

He can play as a right back, he has done it a lot but his current hype is based on him being used as a wingback. The only thing that would make sense is if he was brought to replace Wan Bissaka and essentially have two attacking right fullbacks instead of switching from one type to the other when you go from Dalot to Wan Bissaka.
As long as he can stand on two feet and can control a ball then he's significantly better than Dalot. Those are the only checkpoints required.
Wing back is a very different role to full back though. Wing backs are often tasked with attacking the box off the ball, they’re almost wide strikers in a sense. Look at players like Marcos Alonso, Doherty, Dumfries, even the way Tuchel uses his wing backs. Clauss seems to be of a similar school given how highly he ranks for stats like shots in the box and expected goals, while having very poor passing stats.

someone who's more than likely watched him play vs someone that has looked at stats incorrectly, this is fun.
Why would I have a mare? A fullback isn't a wingback, a player can be significantly different depending on the role you use him, that's the case for Clauss, it's also the case for Aguilar or Dubois and many other players. So maybe I'm having a mare but there is no scenario where I'm going to pretend that Clauss is the same player as a wingback and as a fullback because he isn't.

We don't need a fullback to excel at tiki taka, just look at Kyle Walker. What we need is a player that is defensively sound, all while capable of putting the ball into the box consistently. That will be a massive upgrade as right now our options are awful. We can't be nitpicky because he's not Joao Cancelo.

Have you ever watched Kyle Walker? He very rarely crosses the ball and he’s excellent at passing it.

He's mediocre at possession though, compared to someone like Joao Cancelo.
Seems like he takes corners. It will be nice seeing Shaw and Clauss take corners from either side.

I’m not sure how anyone who gives the ball away as little as Walker while attempting as many passes as he does, for the best possession team in the world, can be described as mediocre at possession. And he’s far far better at keeping the ball than Clauss that’s for sure.
He is barely a RB, he is more right midfielder or wingback. He used to sometimes play RB in germany though.

As a french supporter, I can tell you that is good, just start to be picked by Deschamps in national team, but he did good when he played, his first quality is his right foot, he's a great crosser, he's also good tactically, he improved really quickly with coach Franck Haise in Lens who loved to play in 3-5-2, this formation demands to be good offensively and to be carefull on your position, and he was among the best right back in the league with Hakimi.
Honestly it would be a good choice to have him, for four main reason :
- Our current right back are not good offensively, we saw how Dalot struggled against Atletico, and Bissaka, well it's Bissaka, good on tackle but that's it..
- The market is very rich on left back but very very poor in RB position
- Clauss did much better than Mukiele in national team, he's far better offensively and have a great fighting spirit
- He played in Lens, north of france, which is very similar in the way of living with Manchester, weather, food... He will adapt quickly to England the same way former Lille player like Cabaye, Hazard did.

I can't claim to know lots about Clauss but, based on what @JPRouve has said, is nobody else slightly concerned that he's more of a wing back than a full back?
United need a right back who offers more in attack. That's true. However, if Clauss is not really a right back this transfer could go much the same way as Telles: Playing a wing back in a more defensive position than they are used to and seeing them get caught out in defensive situations over and over.

We may still want to see how Dalot/AWB/Laird develop so why totally block that pathway?
