(I did have a look through the first few pages and didn't spot a Stones thread, one probably exists somewhere but I thought with a new season, a new manager and a new playing style a new thread might be merited regardless)

We all know that Jose rates Stones, he pursued him very hard last season but couldn't get the deal done. United now very much need a long term partner for Smalling and Stones may well fit the bill. Many of the early Mourinho transfer target articles have specifically mentioned his desire to sign Stones ( http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football...first-man-utd-battle-for-john-stones-and-nem/ + many others) so it seems that a deal for Stones is very much a possibility this year.

Personally, I love when United sign the brightest young British talent and I will always desire to have an English core to the team when possible. A back 4 featuring Stones, Smelling and Shaw would certainly wouldn't lack young English players. With Rooney, Carrick and Young not getting any younger (or better) it may be time to add some new blood if possible.

Stones obviously has a lot of talent and is still only 21. He had an up and (arguably mostly) down season last year but he still has the makings of a top player, and lets face it, playing for Martinez is hardly ideal for any defenders.

So here is a 2016/17 Stones thread. Would you make a move? I would.

Jones plus £40m.

This latest article isnt exactly positive for those who are interested in Stones: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football...first-man-utd-battle-for-john-stones-and-nem/

The fact City and Barca have stolen a march on United will not put off Mourinho, but the Portuguese will need to call on all his powers of persuasion to sway the race for Stones in his favour.

City manager Pep Guardiola wants to pair Stones with Aymeric Laporte in a new-look partnership, while Barca see him as the best defensive prospect in European football and believe he is ideally suited to La Liga.

He was atrocious this season, but there might be some good material there.
If Mourinho manages to make him think that he isn't Beckenbauer, then he might actually become a good defender.

It would be strange seeing an English player at Barcelona. I think Lineker is the only one previously.

Our main target for today seem to be Varane and rightly so but Mou definitely watched Stones multiple times and saw something there.

Just another one to consider from already rich pool of players.

He's coming off a poor season where he made his fair share of mistakes for Everton but I still think he's a good player with a lot of potential. He likes to bring the ball out from the back which has backfired many times for him this season but personally that's what I like to see from a young player. He's a lad with a lot of confidence and is not afraid to dribble and pick out a pass. With the right management and coaching, he can perfect that side of his game and also work on his defending and concentration which he has lacked at times. I've seen him do some stupid and unnecessary things but like I said, with the right coaching he can become a top defender. The whole Everton side looked shite this season which definitely didn't help his progress. A fresh club and a new manager who obviously rates him highly could bring the best out of him.

Him making a tit of himself with the ball isnt the main issue, its the fact he cant defend. You dont just learn to defend at 21.

"...while Barca see him as the best defensive prospect in European football and believe he is ideally suited to La Liga."

Doesn't make sense.

They already have a solid central defensive paring of Gerald Pique and Javier Mascherano.

He was playing under Martinez. Even Baresi would have looked a newbie defender if he played under Martinez. Martinez just doesn't believe in defense.

He plays crap for Hodgson too... He really can't defend. He's not even David Luiz good on the ball either. But there is something there to work with and i would be happy with him for the right price. If it goes tits up we can always hope Phil Jones stays fit.

That still doesnt stop a talented defender showing his own personal worth. Have you ever seen him dominate a forward? Take over and defend the box when they need him to.

Martinezs shit management hasnt stopped jagielka looking a far more competent defender.

Honestly don't care about Stones. He's had a poor season and there are other defenders who look more the real deal by the sounds of it.

Would be much more excited to see Varane here. Can someone explain why it didn't work out for him his season at Real Madrid? Thought the French connection would have made him a no-brainer in Zidane's plans.

Much rather Varane.

This guy, altough he got some talent is probably the most vastly overrated English prospect in the latest years. A DM prospect that play at CB and gets a lot of recognition for it because of his above average skills on the ball for a defender. Think expensive, english de-luxe version of Blind, altough Blind is better than him currently.

After the season he just had he would be rated at 20m tops if he was German \ Spanish \ French, but because he is English Everton will ask for something silly like 40m.

There is probably someone we can get for France for less than half of what he will cost, that will be better, or just as good, like Umtiti

@Downcast (?)

I really like that Eric Bailly from Villareal as well.

I don't have anything against him and I think highly rated young centre backs generally do come good in time, if they can stay fit. Think with Everton having money these days he'd cost more than he's really worth, though.

Stones would be ok, but for that price can be not get either Varane of Marquinhos?

I haven't seen Stones other than in the matches against United and I don't really have any recollection of his performences there. However, I do share @Tiber's view that United should try to sign the best young English talents ala Rooney, Rio and Shaw.

Have Stones really been that bad? I mean, Mourinho was chasing him hard last year.

Jones has pretty much killed my enthusiasm for any promising young English defenders, and Stones himself hasn't exactly reassured me this season either.

I'd very much we rather avoid Stones and the English tax and look to Varane or Marquinos.

Same as giggs, prove yourself before you get the job at united. At the minute apparently Stones has massive potential but I've only seen him play really well about 4 times, I wouldn't be buzzing to sign him.

i think Paddy is just as good as him. Never saw the big deal with him and was laughing at chavs wanting him for 30 mill. Hes decent but i dont think he is better than TFM or Even Paddy, But thats just one mans opinion

City want him and Laporte. We like to talk about how we spent 250m in the last two years. City would have spent close to that amount on CBs alone.

Paddy?! He is a disaster.

I reckon Madrid would let Varane go for 35-40m, but doubt PSG would let Marquinhos go.

35M for John Stones or Varane? I know who Id pick.
As for Marquinhos, he is firmly behind Silva and Luiz at PSG who arent going anywhere. He will want to leave this summer.

Yes, I think he would come - if allowed to leave. But PSG doesn't operate like any other football club. We need Mourinho to tap him up and get him to throw his toys out of the pram if we want him to come.

Not sure £40m for a more athletic, but less intelligent version of Blind makes much sense.

Jose is clearly a fan though and has a very good record with defenders.

Has talent and, given Mou's ability to get defences playing well, you'd have to go with it if he's who Mourinho wants.

He was very good on his first season, average last year and atrocious this season.

I think that there is some good material there, but he isn't in the same bracket at Gimenez, Varane, Laporte or Marquinhos. Still he can become a very good defender, but unlikely that he will become world class.

Signing the best English talents at the moment is one of the worst things, considering that bar Kane, there is no-one that good which we can sign. At the moment, we should get them just for the numbers like City. Otherwise, say goodbye to success.
