John McGinn

I bet Fletcher thinks McTominay will also turn into Roy Keane any moment now.

It’s so unimaginative. Two Scottish blokes like Scottish player. Even if it was true I wouldn’t write the story because it’s so boring.

Good player, but the idea of signing McGinn because SAF and Fletcher like him is indicative of broken process and I wouldn't have much faith that the next manager would appreciate him or that he would necessarily fit their football.

United should really just appoint the next manager, clarify the DoF situation (either Rangnick is the guy or he isn't, the consultant role is either unworkable or symbolic in the long run), and then only start buying players once somebody is making the decisions who has a clear vision for how to construct a world class side given today's football and an idea of the player attributes necessary in every position for realizing that vision. Doing anything else at this point is just digging the hole deeper.

McGinn is the correct profile of player for a coach looking to play the game in the opponents half. McGinn next to a Frenkie de Jong in ten Hag's 4-2-3-1 has the potential to function.

It all depends on the composition of the midfield and who is doing what job in both offensive and defensive transitions, which ultimately decides how the team control the game with and without the ball. Someone like Ruben Neves would be a bad choice if the aim is to play a proactive game by playing a compact high block because he'd get bypassed in defensive transition, both as a 6 or 8, hence Wolves set up in a mid-block with a extra CB for protection.

I'd have him as long as its not just him we sign at CM. Mata goes , Matic as well along with Jesse, and maybe a few more to open up signings for CM . Mcginn would be one along with 2 others if Pogba goes 3 others . What we got now arnt any good. Same 3 are in there . Mctom ,Fred, Matic.

Transformation into peak banter era Liverpool complete. This is our Charlie Adam signing.

I quite like him but I'm not having it that you can't get better and cheaper from Europe.

I want this to be true now because:

a) I think he's quite good
b) the meltdown would be fantastic to watch on here

A lot of very ignorant posts in here. Truly shocked.

If our bar is “better than McFred” that’s a pretty low bar - most Premier League starting midfielders will meet this test, including McGinn

McGinn is an excellent player, there's some real snobbery on display here, and the usual anti British stuff.

However, although he's an upgrade on Fred and McTominay he's not exactly what we need, which is a ball playing DM. I'd happily take McGinn in addition to that if we could off load Fred for a not too dissimilar price.

Steve Howson is against this signing as he's too costly and quite frankly he doesn't think he's good enough. I doubt anyone can call the guy anti British.

He's an ok player, I am 50 / 50 on him to be honest. I know we can keep banging the biggest club in the world drum but really think we need to get back to basics with our future signings. Quite a few players have come in on high wages, high price tag and their attitude is just not right. While McGinn, might not be a worldie, he would be giving 100% and run through brick walls. For the next few years we need a few more players with the right mentality. Not just because he is Scottish, but I don't think Liverpool have done too bad with Andy Robertson.

Question I would ask is, what is McGinn's ceiling and could he improve under a good coach? He really does tick the other boxes of attitude and application which a lot of our current mob are sadly missing.

He's fine but I sure hope we are not signing him for the leadership component alone. Its one thing leading Buendia and Watkins and a whole different thing leading in a team featuring two other international captains and the likes of Bruno, de Gea etc.

If we didn't have Fred in the squad I'd be happy but I don't see the need even if he's better than Fred. We need a couple of midfielders this summer and they'll need to be of more quality than John McGinn.

Mcginn is a very good midfielder. I am surprised at posters making lazy Charlie Adam comparisons.

I actually like this signing. Hopefully it means a switch to buying hard working players that fit a profile under reasonable wages, instead of paying silly money for luxury' players without giving a thought as to how they'd fit and giving them £250k a week.

That's not why we'd be getting him in so lets stop this narrative.

McGinn is a good player but not the profile we need. Aston Villa use him as the advanced midfielder and we need a DM or a deep-lying playmaker; McGinn is not that and therefore we just bloating our squad further.

I long to see a midfield of McGinn and McTominay bossing mid table !

If McGinn was on a free or £10m max yeah let’s add him if it also meant off loading one of our current midfielders but as an expensive buy, no way. We need to be scouting players better than him because I’m sure if we spunked a ridiculous fee on him, somehow Villa would buy someone better to replace him for a lot less. I’m fed up of being mugged off for overpriced British premier league players.

I have always rated him but the more I think about it, he is very similar to Fred. An upgrade on him but enough to warrant the fee? Probably not.

Depressing.

A club with worldwide appeal, countless scouts who's job it is to unearth talent from all over the world, and we think McGinn is the answer.

Reeks of when we had all of Europe to scour over, and we settled on Maguire and Wan-Bissaka for the paltry sum of £130 million

He doesn't fit the profile we need and the rest is basically what we did in 2019.

Squad player at best which we already have.Need to be aiming higher imo.

Nothing wrong with a workhorse midfield

Premier league champions 19/20 with an amazing 99 points
Henderson - Winjaldum - Milner
Well exactly. The conversation on here if we had been lining up any of those 3 before Liverpool bought them. The mindset that laughs at the notion that Sadio Mané at Southampton might be good enough for the mighty Man Utd. We've been crying for a tactician at the helm for eons. What we need now are players that can fit a system, and crucially that have the attitude and mentality to do that. I love McGinn. I'll listen to the tactical analyses of why he mightn't fit but the jokers on here that think he's not 'United standard' can do one.

What sort of price is being quoted, if we got him for 20 million under then he might be worth a Dan James style punt, no doubt Villa would want something ridiculous because somebody else paid something ridiculous for someone else somewhere at some time.
That's usually how these things go.
If it's a stupid price I would leave it, we got absolutely stung with Sancho, we need to learn our lessons.

No better than what we have got, just playing in a Villa side that hasn't got the forensic microscope on them or high profile ex players saying they are shite. Does Harry look like a 80m player, AWB at 50m, Sancho 80m or Pogs 90m? We have a graveyard of players that arrive here half decent, and turn into shite very quickly. There is a pressure that comes with playing here that many players have struggled with...

That said, If Fred or Scott played for Villa, I almost guarantee we would be talking about buying them.

Would be a great signing imo, would be an upgrade for us and add more intensity and hard work immediately.

If its a Pogba replacement I'll rather Teilemans, younger and higher ceiling

Tielemans feels like the kind of obvious signing we ignore over and over again, we should have picked him up when he was leaving Anderlecht. Similarly I was crying out for us to sign Dembele before he moved from Fulham to spurs, he looked Spurs best midfielder for the time he was there and would have been a massive upgrade on all the shit we signed instead during that period.
