John McGinn

I'd be all for this as he's my kind of player. He was fantastic at the Euros in the summer also.

However, If they're going to fleece us with a Maguire like fee, I'd give it a miss.

Been watching him since he broke through in Scotland at St Mirren and then joining my local team Hibs and becoming a huge fan favourite & club legend there.

Really good midfielder and much better than what we currently have. Then again, I reckon this is just a load of clickbait.

He is better than what we have.

But our standards have just fallen so low now. Our midfield will now be fully Scottish.

Our transformation to the Liverpool of the second decade after their glory years seems to have begun. When they signed players like Stuart Downing and Andy Carrol

Wouldn't be a bad signing if the money wasn't insane.

Cue Villa demanding 50 million for him.

He's a good player but not for stupid money like £40-50m.

What he would bring, as would Haidara, is intensity and 100% commitment on the pitch. I'm guessing that RR and the coaching team are identifying that characteristic as even more important than things like technique, and maybe they're right.

Is he even better than what we have? He’s like an offensive box to box midfielder, no?

He averages 39 passes per 90 which puts him in the bottom 19th percentile (McTominay for example averages a massive 11 passes more than him per 90 and one of the biggest criticisms against McTominay is he fails to impose himself on the ball, and drifts out of matches).
Not only that, his passing accuracy is down at 75% which puts him in the bottom 8 percentile per 90.

We need central midfielders who can get on the ball and play around with it a little, because we really struggle to ever control games or see out leads. I don’t see how getting McGinn helps anything.

That’s not even getting into his defensive stats which are pretty average across the board.

Oh no, Fletcher and SAF rate a British based player. That's it, closed minded, ignorant, nationalists are interfering in our transfer business.

@FrankDrebin
Ad @Vault Dweller to the shit list. He’d absolutely love this he said. The bad, bad man — how dare he; rate his compatriot?

Wouldn’t be happy with the signing personally but he is our level. Also wouldn’t be surprised if we paid a ridiculously high price for him if we did get him.

I feel like people are stuck in the past. 40 million quid is not that much these days.

There’s no way Villa would entertain the sale unless we bid well north of £50 million. They’re in the process of adding big names to their squad and aren’t going to want to lose their leaders.

I’d also argue he is not the sort of player we should be going after as it’s clear we need technical players that can dictate the tempo of our play

We’ve done alright shopping at Villa. I like him as a player and by god does our team need hard working leaders with the skills to back it up but I think for 50/60 million we’d be having our pants pulled down. We need our scouts and DOF to work a lot harder than this. 5 year signing and then a long new deal again when he’s 31 and we don’t bother to sign anyone else younger/better in his place until he’s clearly knackered for a few years. Will no doubt be on wages no other club will touch again if it doesn’t work out. As long as we actually have a plan now I’m on board. I just still don’t see any plan or even the beginnings of one currently

I prefer Ramsey and Douglas Luiz at this point. McGinn is good but I suspect both Luiz and Ramsey are going to be better when they're 27 like he is. He's pretty much a better McTominay on the floor but without the aerials

Zakaria is available for 7m and we are considering this for 40m? Since when did we become happy with mid table?

I think prices have gone back to being a bit lower. Two years ago £40m felt like £15m in 2010. It's back to being a quite significant amount of money again.

Haidara , Mcginn only scenario they would make sense is that they are coming here as squad options and we are selling Fred and Mctominay otherwise we should already write the next season off as well

I didn't say it, I'm just twisting

Been saying this for a long time about McGinn, we should get Jacob Ramsey while we’re at it…

Yeah you’re probably right. 40 is a bit on the high side of things but I wouldn’t say that it’s a total rip off.

Aye. There were probably a few opportunities to sign him without now having to pay top dollar because he's always been a cracking prospect. I think he's been Scotland's best player for some time now and, for comparative purposes, is a fair distance ahead of McTominay in his influence on the team.

That said I think a lot depends on what the strategy is for the squad. He'd fit a high-energy all-round midfield similar to what Liverpool have. And would instantly improve the balance in United's 4-2-2-2 with his natural central/wide covering abilities. But I have no idea where United are headed and what profile of midfielders they should sign.

He's fine but he isn't a player who should be starting for a top 4 PL side.

We need an actual sitting midfielder, next to an actual deep playmakers who can do his bit defensively but dictate from deep, progress the ball, be an option always and not give it away recklessly. Like Jorgingo for Chelsea. Or Carrick/Scholes for us previously. McGinn would be a more useful squad player than VdB... But a squad player none the less.

He's not the type of midfielder we should prioritise. Then you factor in the price and his age and it just seems like another move in the wrong direction.

Looking at Haidara (a player I've seen nothing of) and McGinn's stats, where they would appear to be an improvement on face value is in terms of stats like progressive passing and dribbling.

Assuming for a moment we were actually interested in players of that profile, it makes me wonder if the concern we're looking to address is our ability to get the ball up to our attackers as directly as possible. Perhaps the prototype in mind is something similar to the Liverpool midfield in the earlier days of Klopp's success there, where there was perceived to be a similar lack of a midfielder who could get on the ball and play around with it.

It amazes me the snobbery of our fans towards some players, you’d thinking we didn’t have thread after thread and post after post of moaning about our midfield then when a solid name is mentioned we turn our nose up at them..

Just out if interest - I really want a sitting midfielder aswell, who is in your wishlist?

The only downside to signing John McGinn would be that we haven't signed two of him.
