Why the hell do they need this many CBs?
They're just doing what a well run club should be doing, recharging from a position of strength, rather than waiting for it to get stale and ineffective before trying to fix it. Basically doing proper maintenance on your car rather than only repairing it after it's broken down.

I’m afraid the FFP regulations are based on revenue numbers, so it don’t make any difference if the new owner pays off the debt and puts 250m in the bank - FFP regs will still only look at % of revenue.
Wrong FSP is the new Financial sustainability period and if you pay the debt off you effectively prevent the club from paying interest payments to service the debt. The new FSP which starts this summer allows 90% of sales revenue to be be spent on Financisls(that’s profit and loss, and whether the club has a debt and how it services their debt), Net transfer fees and upfront Agent Fees and Finally wages all these costs must be no more than 90% of our turnover which is yet to be finalised until end of this month.

I’m posting a link for FSP

Laporte's replacement is my guess. Pep is ruthless
They already have 4 centre backs in Dias, Stones, Akanje and Ake to be fair so they don't need to replace Laporte if they don't want to, would make sense for them to sign a couple of full backs instead.

Pep doesn't need full backs anymore.

Preparing for quadruple?

They dont play with traditional fullbacks. They play with centre halfs at fullback based on their dominant foot - Akanji/Ake LB, even seen Stones at RB on occasion.

The concept of 'fulbacks' and certainly 'wingbacks' dont exist at City.

Pep has been very open in his interviews recently that his thinking has changed on what his defence should be built on with regard to fullbacks who are much more solid defensively. With Stones already he has moved away from an inverted fullback to a ball playing CB sitting in both FB slots, with the exception of Walker occasionally this year when he specifically wanted pace.

I think this signing just cements that thinking with Laporte, Cancelo and Walker likely/potentially all on their way out, and this being the replacement. You’re essentially left with Dias, Akanji, Stones, Ake & Gvardiol to fill a back 4. Then Rico Lewis being the youngster of the group who should again see some more playing time this year.

Wasn't meant to be serious, mate. But i like this below post analogy.

I hope Real Madrid make a move. If Man City sign him they might win the Quad next season

Jesus - imagine doing the treble and then bringing in Rice and Gvardiol for good measure. These lads are not being complacent.

Going from strength to strength. No way he is worth that much, but they don't even care.

As a Croat, wish both him and Kovacic nothing but miserable few years at a club level.

They are basically at that point everyone gets to in football manager where you win everything and still get £250m to spend for good measure, basically ensures you keep dominating.

Ideally this is what should be done. Easier to consolidate from a position of strength rather than wait for things to go downhill then try to pick them up again.

If we had City money when the glazers took over we’d still be up there.

Yeah and that’s not including casually replacing Gundogan with Kovacic. Must be an easy sell all the same - we will pay whatever it takes to whoever it takes and you get to play in a team that is guaranteed to win something. Even at the peak of our powers - we never consolidated like this. The players we bought for big money were always to fill some sort of gap or upcoming gap. These fukers just buy world class players for their bench!

Embarrassing money to spend on a 5th CB. You would think that place can go to a youth player.

Pep's eye for talent is exceptional to be fair, another astute unknown for a cheap price on a tiny wage.
You are saying this. But people in the Pep threads genuinely give him credit for getting the best out of Stones and Grealish  Such cheap hidden gems!

Just casually adding Rice & Gvardiol to a treble side, ngl a bit jealous.

He's another one I wanted us to sign a year or two ago when his profile was low.

Not that it matters to City with their wealth, but the SCP centre back, Goncalo Inacio would've been the better player due to his lower price and ability to play out from the back. He's also left footed.

Let’s hope he’s shit and has a Messi WC done on him every weekend

It's shit for the league to City strengthen to such ridiculous levels, just tossing money out meaninglessly.

Tossing money is one thing.

What they have done which we never did in the Fergie era is buying the very best talent available, like Madrid did in those years.

Haaland on paper was cheap but it is not rocket science to go for him. Same for Gvardiol at a much higher price.

How can City keeps spending 60, 80, 100, 120 millions on 1 player? It must some creative accounting with sponsorship. How can EPL and football governing body not investigate their financial? If found guilty, they should be ban immediately. Ridiculous that they can make marquee signing every season.
