Jesse Lingard

Lingard might not have been seen as a important first team player, but it was reported that Solskjaer wanted to have the team pressing high. And when the aim is to press high, then you need players in reserve who are ready to come in and apply pressure high up the pitch. And that's important for any coach that wants to squeeze the pitch and play the game in the opponents half. So your back up players are important in that regard, and Lingard, as much as I never rated him, was a player who fit the above profile. So it was easy to understand why Solskjaer would give someone like Lingard assurances.

But as it turned out, our forwards and midfielders were comfortably by-passed, which meant the two CBs would then have to start back pedalling to thwart counters. So instead of pressing high, we reverted back to type (mid block).

I said at the start of the season that Solskjaer should move the likes of Lingard on, and bring in a few of the talented youth already at the club to replace him, and one or two others. But Solskjaer decided to keep hold of Lingard and reportedly gave him assurances of minutes.

And it looks like Rangnick might actually do, what I expected Solskjaer to do at the start of the season. By integrating 2 or 3, of the club's talented youth players by making space for them, by moving on a number of first team squad players.

He’s talented but he wouldn’t have had half the career he’s had, had it not been for the platform United has given him.
He’s been incredibly lucky to be a homegrown player coming through during the shambles of the last 10 years.

You're making assumptions to prolong your argument here. Players don't generally stay at clubs unless the first team Manager gives them assurances of game time. And in this case, it was widely reported that Solskjaer wanted to go into the new season with a big squad, hence the likes of Van de Beek, Lingard, Bailly were reportedly given assurances of minutes. Journos like Paul Hirst even questioned the wisdom of Solskjaer and his insistence on going into the new season with a big squad.

To be fair mate I'm not the only one. We can't know what was was said in private conversations and what assurances were made based on tweets, the opinions of journalists, articles etc. without making assumptions.

And I haven't said Solskjaer considered him a important part of his squad, but he was rather considered part of the squad, as back up player in a team that was going into the new season looking to adopt a high pressing game style which requires back up players with Lingard's profile. But sadly for us and Solskjaer, he got this badly wrong, and carried on playing the under performing players, without much rotation, which had become pretty normal for him in his last 18 months at the club.

Yeah behind Pogba, Bruno, Van De Beek, James, Sancho, Martial, Rashford, Greenwood, Ronaldo and Cavani. I've no idea how many games Solskjaer envisaged Lingard getting with that bunch ahead of him.

Sometimes you have to call a spade a spade. And in this case, it was clear to me at least, that Solskjaer's inexperience as both coach and squad builder at this level was for all to see. He got the job due to Fergie, and did a decent job for a while. Buy when it came to transitioning from a low-mid block team to a proactive high pressing team , he struggled to find the balance and was correctly dismissed.

And I believe that's what I'm doing and judging the situation on what has actually happened with how Solskjaer handled and used Lingard since 2019 as opposed to PR stuff in the media.

I'd largely agree with your assessment of Solskjaer this season for what it's worth.

Obviously Solskjaer didn't see him as important because he barely played him in the last 18 months regardless of what he was saying in public.

I don't think Lingard had any other plan than leaving on a free and picking up a big signing on fee/contract in the summer. Fair play to him, I'd have probably done the same.

If all these players really thought they were going to get a lot of game time this season they need new agents that can do some basic division.

Indeed and yeah I largely see this situation the same as you and it does need to be pointed out that players are well within their rights to run their contracts down. Club have no qualms in getting rid of players deemed no longer necessary, contracts work both ways.

I don't think he was behind VdB, who hardly got a chance under Solskjaer.

For me his competition for a role in the team was the following players - Bruno, Sancho, Rashford and Greenwood. Cavani, Ronaldo and Martial were the central strikers, so I don't believe that's a position he would be a candidate for. You also have to remember that Rashford was unavailable for the first few months of the season and Sancho was and still is finding his feet in the league. So Lingard's competition for the first few months of the season, was Bruno in a central role, and Greenwood and Sancho in wide forward roles. So I can see why Solskjaer would promise Lingard game time. But his reluctance to rotate players became a issue when the chips were down imo.

But we can agree to disagree here, mate. Because this is not a hill worth dying on.

The problem with that is we don’t currently have enough consistent and reliable senior players from a form or fitness perspective to set the standard for those youngsters.

His family have got some fecking nerve after the club looked after him and them when his mum and grandad were ill and Jesse stopped being a footballer.

Absolute piece of shite scumbag! The entitled arrogant cheeky cnut!

Put him in the reserves if he refuses to leave this transfer window!

The sooner we get rid of this cancer from the club bringing the morale down the better. Him and his Chav family.

Nobody disrespects the badge and shirt. How dare you!

Tried to run contract down…upset It’s won’t let him go for cheap 6 months out.
Not very smart is Jesse

DVB played more games than Lingard in the first half of last season when they were both at the club mate. Though I reckon Solskjaer was planning to use Donny in Central midfield more than AM so maybe.

Lingard wouldn't be up front no but Ronaldo and Martial have both played on the left wing this season to be fair mate.

Indeed mate.

This thread has a disturbing lack of Jesse Lingard using Jesse Lingard's sources to tell Jesse Lingard that Jesse Lingard isn't pleased with the direction Jesse Lingard is steering the discussion about Jesse Lingard.

Demote him to the u23s for the rest of the season. Shouldn't have a first team locker.

Thats unfair to the U23s to have this money grabbing cnut hanging around like a bad smell bringing everyone down.

Clearly Lingard cares about money more than football thinking of that big payday in the summer with massive wages and signing on fee because he's out of contract. You ain't going to the World Cup with only 2-months of football at the start of next season, matey!

J-Ling$

If he cared about football and wasn't such a money grabbing whore he would be in Manchester right knocking down doors trying to force through a move in the final hours of the transfer window. Not swanning around in feckin Dubai without a care in the World because he's thinking of his big fat payday in the summer and comforting himself with his bank balance and happy with that.

No ambition. Sums up Modern day footballers mentality in a nut shell. With a few exceptions. Look at the difference between Donny and Lingard this transfer window.. one is trying to force through a move because they care about playing football more than money and wants to go to the World Cup.. where as the other is satisfied and comfortable with sitting on his bum for a few months collecting his wages risking not going to the World Cup, because he cares more about money than playing football..

There's absolutely no way his brother posts such a stupid "meme" without knowing how Jesse feels about the situation.

Jesse's the leak. Let the little rat fcuk leave already.

Sensible post, as always Adnan. Jesse is a very underrated player but an easy target no such thing As bad PR?!) fans find it hard to differentiate between pushing it around in a half classy way and being a bit of a dickhead but when he’s at it it’s actually filthy and effective. If I was building a team of undervalued PL players he’d be an 8/10 and a massive pain in the arse to play against! The thing is he’s not a physical player and he costs a lot per week and he 100% will drop off very soon. That’s the main thing with him. Ralf will know that. Jesse knows that.

The guys crying for Amad. It’s a veeeery similar player. He's technical but a bit of a softie. We should have parted ways with JL when his stock was highest, for both parties but i understand. Lingard would be the creative legs in the England midlfield by now under Fergie. Not even messing. Lingard should have been a big player. In a pressing team he might have been a fan favourite! His finishing is sick, hardworking and can pick a pass? Sounds like a less tough Milner to me.

Milner is on Jesse wages now though, keep that in mind.

Mate outside of a couple of purple patches (one at West Ham) Lingard has been absolutely dire his entire career. How anyone could define him as underrated is beyond me. And he deserves everything he gets because his mentality has been worse than his shit form for years now. Which is some bloody accomplishment. Supporters have every right to be fed up at this point.

very fair. I just have this feeling that he’s waaay better than he’s shown. I remember Fergie even saying he’s a belter. It’s just I can see it when he played for WH and just in the way he dribbles and gets onto play. He’s a special player who stoped working hard here which is bad. When Fergie says you’re one of the best small players he’s seen
That’s sick

in a winning team he could have been our Guti but Guti was obviously a million miiiilees better but a similar job. Problem is we are looking for saviour/s. Our savour will be a manager or cash or a few players? It’s the owners that are holding us. Always has been. Get a system. Then we can get a few tough players and let little guys like Jesse go for it

Fergie had his share of bad takes mate, Jones being the next duncan edwards, ravel morrison being better than rooney, calling cleverly the best midfielder in Britain. Just because sir alex thought something didn't make it so.

Guti was inconsistent and split opinion despite having bags of ability. Lingard has never been half the player technically and never will be. I really don’t understand the myth at this point. Park was was levels above little Jesse.

The Greenwood news surely puts an end to any perspective move for him now. We are looking short at numbers up front.

Surely Elanga would take that spot ahead of Lingard?
Ronaldo, Cavani, Sancho, Rashford, Elanga and Lingard. That's our 6 options for 3 positions. And given how two of these are 35 and 37 ( in a couple of weeks) and Elanga has just a handful of senior appearances, I can't feasibly see us letting Lingard go. If anything we probably need to get someone in as well in addition to keeping Lingard, given the injury record of Cavani and Rashford/Sancho's form.

Pogba can and has played on the left too to be fair.
