It's a tough one, is he a starter no, is he a decent squad player yes.

One thing we clearly lack (from many), is strong squad depth that Ole can depend on.

How many big games last season, did Ole not make subs or only made some as a desperate last resort because he has no faith in the bench.

Stay or go, it's not a massive win or loss and that's why Jesse has to truly decide whether to be a squad player at United or a regular elsewhere.

I guess money also factors into it, as i'm sure he won't get the United wages elsewhere in England / West Ham etc

No he isnt though, he stunk up the place, it was genuinely like playing with ten men with him on the pitch half the time

he had been a decent squad player. Some of our fans will rewrite history and say he crap throughout his entire career.

however, he was barely used for a year before he went to west ham - and we at only getting stronger in the areas Lingard operates In.

yes, he may need to take a paycut - but I’m sure he’s looking for a 4-5 year deal, so quids up in the long run.
 
we should sell ASAP. There's something that a LOT OF YOU seems to forget regarding Lingard : he is a good player when the game is open and he has space to run into ! that's why he was good at west ham because unless united, they face teams that don't sit back and wait ! So I can assure you that if he comes back, we will see the same old Lingard that struggle when there's no space just like in 70% of the games that we play.

That was before his West Ham loan.

Also, a lot of our first 11 play like that too at times, it wasn't just Jesse.
 
I would be very surprised if he does infact want to continue with us/at United.
Looked like he found his confidence and swagger at West Ham and seemed far more mentally happy to be involved week in, week out.

Why swap something like that for sitting on our bench (or in the stands) again ?

He’s not good enough for us but enough with the hyperbole.

He’ll do well at a mid table club and maybe elevate them like West Ham.

This is it.
And if people actually watched West Ham games, the last 5-6 games he dropped off a real gear as well.

There is a slight suspicion that Lingard made a big advantage of being totally fresh for half a season, against players who'd been battered by the schedule.
Maybe slightly harsh, but it caught up with him near the end of the season.

His main problem for us, is like Van de Beek faces, our best player plays where he's at his best.

It really isnt hyperbole. He offered literally nothing and actively hindered us for a long time.

Yeah this is exactly why we should sell him and reinvest it in a tempo controlling CM/proper DM whichever Ole wants

It was really only the first half of 19/20 where he was that bad. Probably for the 12 months after that as well, but he basically didn't play for those 12 months after we signed Bruno so you can't say he hindered us.

Before that he was fine for a squad player level. He ended up playing a lot more than he really should have, but that's because he outperformed the players that 'should' have been ahead of him. That's their fault (and the managers for not signing the right players), not his.

That's what I have noticed too, it's either down to fitness or lack of desire and drive to perform consistently over a long period.

I mean to me it was quite obviously none of those, teams started sitting back against West Ham and the whole team struggled. Lingard and the rest got the majority of their joy on the break and when teams were more open against them.

It's a bit of both IMO, Lingard thrives with space but we don't get this in majority of our games, unfortunately this also applies to quite a few of our players.

Towards the latter games of the season he definitely tailed off and didn't look as fresh, this was more noticeable in his defensive game as he didn't press as well compared to his early appearances.
 
Surely the club can and should take advantage of his good spell at West Ham and sell him while there is some money to be gotten. The lack of rumors about it is concerning but than again the euros are on and plenty of time left of the window still. Just wish the club was better at buying and selling.
 
Just get £20M and move on, he's never been good enough and his level is week in and week out for a West Ham.
 
He'll come back, he won't displace Bruno. He'll be sitting on the bench getting occasional 10 min appearance once/twice a month + 90 min against Colchester or whoever we play in the first games of League cup and FA cup. He'll sulk in and his value will drop from 15-20 mil to "we'll pay his wages if you take him for free".
Just move him. He's a good lad and all those nice compliments, but he's not a top quality player.
Arsenal, West Ham, Tottenham, Everton, Leicester, Leeds (if he can keep up), Atalanta, Valencia, Roma, Leverkusen, Napoli, Lazio, Gladbach - there are plenty of clubs that would suit his level. Heck, Ashley Young, who we all thought was finished went to Italy and won the Serie A. Imagine what Lingard could do there.

Lingard pushing to stay at United would be his biggest mistake. United not pushing to sell him this summer would be another not so smart move.
We've already given Jones, Bailly and Martial new deals. If we don't sell Lingard this summer is a clear proof we haven't learned a thing about whose value we should protect and who should be moved.
 
If he ends up staying, my already minimal amount of faith I have in this club will be fading away.
 
To be fair if he was actually here warming the bench last year I’d have total belief the club were going to sign him up to a new deal. It’s glazernomics 101. Pad the squad with existing players instead of spending transfer fees unless it’s a totally nessecary position left neglected for a few years at least while other teams reinvest and pick up bargains and players who surprise you.

I think the fact the player himself might want to leave now and his price has increased then the club will pocket the money and say thanks for your service. Usually when we send them out on loan that’s a sure sign they are for sale at least. Maybe he’ll run his contract down.
 
If theres a choice of back-up to Fernandes between Lingard and van de Beek then its Lingard all day long for me. Van de Beek is terrible.
 
We should totally sell him - that’s best for him and for us.
 
Still shaking my head and rolling my eyes when I read that we should keep him. I can’t think of a single reason why we should keep him. Yes, he got his form back for West Ham because:
1. He is among their better and most experienced players
2. Plays regularly for them
3. Has the confidence of his manager (wouldn’t apply at United where the manager for obvious reasons will have much more confidence in Rashford, Greenwood, Bruno & Co.)
4. Teams don’t park the bus against West Ham

All the above doesn’t apply when he plays for us. I would rather keep James who is 5 years younger, not on insane wages for a squad player and will still be motivated even as a squad player.
Whereas Lingard here will have a lot of players ahead of him at United. Any minutes he would play will go to James and Amad.
This is also our last chance to sell him.
I wish him well and he is a decent player who has done well for us in the past and is still a good player for a lot of Premier League sides but his time at United should be over this summer.
 
If it was up to me, I would have sold him and VDB and signed Grealish. We would have been able to recoup approx 50-55M from selling both of these. You add another 20M on top of it, I guess thats the ball park of money required to move Grealish from Villa.

Cannot be true. Lingard is clearly a player who needs to play week in week out to maintain his form. He will be nowhere near our starting line up next season. Imagine if Sancho comes, Lingard will never play. Time to cut the cord, let him go so we can all move on. That being said Utd will probably renew his deal

Yes, Lingard will get an extension, at a higher salary. Eat your hearts out, guys!
 
Lingard is like a new signing says Ole, we need to take a closer look at our midfield options, then we can make a decision on players to get brought in. We got played guys, they stopped us protesting with promises of top players... we actually got Lingard
 
I think if Lingard gets a new deal it's really only so his sell on value go up rather than down, he's only got 1 year left so we might not get as much as we'd like,
Sign him up make him, sign a few players and he'll realise he won't play at all and he'll ask to leave, at the moment he could fetch 30m or more,

According to a report in the Daily Star.....

Though if we were to offer him a new contract it wouldn't surprise me. We're a club run by morons who evidently never learn.
