Decent squad player, hard worker and good presser. There's a place for him in certain situations but he's not getting us to the level we need to be at.

Yeah let's just brush it all under the carpet and pretend he is actually a good player.
We can all say loads of stuff on a forum and we have to play a little game to make a forum work but in reality all the geniuses throwing tantrums all summer in here watch football passively once per week and don't understand it as well as mourinho van gaal and sir Alex Ferguson. I don't make doing the little dance where we pretend we do but when it is to the degree of this thread and this type of tone it is embarrassing. I wish there was a United forum with a different type of tone but there isn't, just different pockets of debate... should really open the threads with lingards name in it anymore, but when it is so many players it's hard to avoid

I mean is he really better than someone like Knockaert who could barely get a start for Brighton in the PL and is now back in the Championship?

I hoped that purple patch in 17/18 was the start of him ‘emerging’ but he was horrible last season. He’s worth feck all in reality so don’t really see the point in selling him. Once he’s confined to purely a squad player then fine.

Only decent against mid table and relegation fodder.
He's decent in scenarios where we need work rate and defensive work, like man marking a holding midfielder for example - basically what Park Ji Sung did for years in the big games away in Europe. Lingard has his uses and he's still a good player, just not good enough to play consistently for us and compete with the better clubs in the league.

Excellent today. Can provide a lot as a link up/balance player and if we sign Dybala, I think he'll be a regular starter be it as part of a midfield 3 or as part of the front 4.

Had very good game. His dribbling, link up play was very good. Looked sharp.

Hate to say it but he had a decent game today, and an excellent goal. Still his average level of shooting is shite

Why do you hate to say it? You’re acting like he plays for another side.

No, I give credit to him when it is due (tonight). Still, I used to criticize him a lot, first and foremost for low end product (but today he scored, and, at the very least, looked much better than Mata).

Of course it would be good if he starts to score more regularly, no question about it.

He played with a purpose today. Less rondo-keep-ball-aimlessly mode and more attack the space and goal mode.

The lingard today is the lingard that everyone loves to see. It’s a shame it comes out 1 in 10 times and usually just against poor opposition.

Frustrating... finally succumbed to my inner sense of disliking him then he fcks it all up by putting in a performance like that. I'm torn.

So strange the hate people have for him. Guy loves the club, been part of the club for ages, and will probably never want to leave the club even if he is only a squad player. And he's a versatile one at that! I'm calling it now, but if we sign Dybala, he's going to have a great season and will be a starter. He's just in the wrong role. It's fine in terms of position, but people see him and think we need his type of player to be scoring and assisting loads, and when he gets those responsibilities on the pitch because we only have Rashford and Martial on the pitch who can currently do it, then he struggles. He's just not that player. If we manage to get Dybala alongside Martial and Rashford to be our main player in the attack, Lingard will do a great balancing job in a deeper role with his work rate, pressing, link up play and running with the ball to progress it down the pitch. He won't have the responsibility of being a consistent goalscoring or creative player, which he just isn't capable of and it leads to fans shitting on him even more. Instead, he'll play a support role and link it all up well to balance out the main 3 attackers with Pogba in midfield. Essentially this:

Martial - Dybala - Rashford
Pogba - McTominay - Lingard
Shaw - Maguire - Lindelof - Wan Bissaka
De Gea

after one good game. I believe this is where people would normally insert a picture of Captain Picard.

It's not based on the game, it's based on his role in the team. We get Dybala, he's no longer that far forward where he looks pretty shit pretty often, and can instead provide a much more consistent level doing things he is actually good at without us caring that he barely scores.

Herrera replacement? Could work, but is he good enough for the role?

He played in a midfield 3 for England in the world cup and had a very good world cup IMO. Hard to judge international football, but he plays the role pretty often at United as well (or a variation of the role). The way he plays he could definitely make it work. It'd essentially still be a 4-2-3-1, just switch between that and a 4-3-3 or 4-3-1-2 as the game goes on, but provided we do sign Dybala, I'm pretty sure we're going to be using that lineup the majority of the time.

Yeah, it's weird because I've always thought he does alright on the pitch except in the opposition area. His movement and excellent midfield rotations help our poor midfield progress the ball; unfortunately, he doesn't have the technical skills or end product to go along with it and thus he's slated.

His stamina, tracking back, and positioning is quite good so if he can improve his tackling and strength he could possibly play in midfield for us in that RCM role.

sorry, I don’t see it. I’ve never seen it. He has a games in him, but they are too far apart to be someone that should be anywhere near the team if we wanna kick on.

What was the story with his socks yesterday? Looked really odd that they were pulled down so low.

I've never seen him dribble past players like he did last night, I really question the commitment of the opposition.

The thing whats kills him the most is that final pass, running is all well and good but if you cant pick up a proper pass in final 3rd for a assist as No10 then whats the point.

I don't get this view. His technical skills are very good. Close control, short passing and first touch are all big strengths of his. What he lacks is end product.

It should also be said that his directness is very important to the team. The likes of Mata, Matic, Pogba and Pereira are all prone to taking too many touches before releasing a pass. Lingard's one touch play is important to balance that out. We look noticeably more pedestrian when he's on the bench.

His goals/assists stats were really poor last season, but for some reason I fancy him to score 10+ goals in the league if he starts the season as it first choice #10 (which I think he will). He had a lot of bad luck, I would have preferred Pogba to pay in that role, but Ole obviously has other plans.

Lingard should start wearing those Edgar Davids glasses when he's playing. It would make him even better.

His short passing can be lacking, and he doesn't have the ability (or vision perhaps?) to play through balls; but his general technique is good, I agree, but in those attacking positions you need more than that.

I agree with his importance with regards to balance, but I don't think you should be expecting him to score that much. If he does it will be a nice surprise.

Good cameo from Jesse. Took his goal well and made some nice runs. Will most likely start through the middle vs Chelsea.

It would be nice to have him in his favourite position this season with wingers either side and a technical striker to link up with. The last time he got to play as the number 10, he delivered goals and assists regularly, and served up many superb performances. He was not very good last season, but it's not very easy to perform consistently while playing out of position and getting moved from one position to another. I could see him beating off competitions with ease and making that AM position his own if we persist with 4231, but I could see him struggling for form if Solskjaer decides to start chopping and changing after a few bad performances like Mourinho did.
