Jose would be loving these kind of headaches : which of the in-form players do I start without changing the balance of the team?

Lingard is an obvious livewire on the pitch and only some dreadful finishing has led to his assist numbers not swelling up as well. He is hard to mark and he might create a reputation of himself that when given space, he will take a shot and more often than not he will score. That will lead to defenders being out of position as they will try to close the gap on him, this can free the space for others. As Cruyff used to say, the best way to score is creating space for yourself in the right kind of areas. It's not just purely talent which can lead you to succeed, as I feel intelligence plays a key role. Despite his craziness on the social media, I think Lingard has intelligence in abundance. Obviously the form plays a huge part, but if he continues like this, he will have to be taken more seriously.

Let's just look at his goals(and the chances he has created for himself and his teammates) in the past couple of months.

Watford - Crunch goal after beating 4 players. Finding space for himself to run and score a beauty.

Arsenal - 2 goals. Finding pockets of space for himself for both the goals.

West Brom - Winner. Finding space on the edge of the box to score off a deflection.

Leicester - Found space, hit the post. Should have scored.

Burnley - Losing 2-0 at half time. Came on as a sub. Missed a sitter, scored 2 goals where he created space for himself in the right areas of the pitch to take free shots at goal. Didn't miss after that early chance.

Everton - Scored a screamer when Everton was growing into the game.

Derby - Scored the all important goal when we were dreadful in front of goal. Another screamer.

Stoke - Created a couple of opportunities for Mata and Martial which were fluffed. Should have had an assist or two.

Yeovil - Scored a goal off the throw in, finding space for himself to take a shot. Another good goal.

That's a remarkable turn of form, but it's not just that. He is finally able to score when given a chance rather than fluffing his chances and scoring only belters. A lot of work he does is off the cameras/ball and you can only see them when you see his individual highlights which I have been doing for the past 2 months. He is a changed player suddenly and for me one of our playersof the season. Long may it continue (which I don't just hope but can actually see happening). He is going to be an important cog in our setup for the good part of our immediate future and he will be happy being a squad player too. No one is talking about the 100k/week salary anymore because he definitely looks like someone who deserves what the club is paying him.

For all the namecalling, he is actually making us tick and hopefully more of caf can too start seeing what I see in him and not call him out when he is not in form.

When it comes to Messi Lingard, there is no stupid question.
We are all perplexed how he has gone from a Championship level player, to an elite level player. This is the reason why most people feel that he will revert back to Jesse Lingard (ie. Championship level).
He was never a fecking championship level player. That was just coined by twats who couldn’t fecking see

So when do we stop referring to him as Messi Lingard and use his real name?

And when do we refer to Messi as Lingard when we are talking about the actual Messi?

This is actually his level now. Has quickly established himself as a very solid, reliable player.

Should be one of the first names on the team-sheet. His movement in the final third is vital.

Very well taken goal(s). And the best one come from right wing. Hmmm..

Just as the agenda posters were saying how Lingard is back to his normal self he scores another amazing goal.

Lingard has shown quality at every level this season; lower league, mid table and top quality opposition.

Does the throw count as an assist from Darmian for Jesse' goal? Essentially it should...

He's developed into a huge player for and right now on current form you just simply cannot drop him.

Yes he will have the poor game now and again, just like every other player in the world but he's certainly a starter for me at this moment in time and I didn't see myself saying that a few months ago.

We don't stop, how about that? He's been top class recently and deserves all the praise he's currently getting. I've been a supporter of his even when some of our fan base were treating him as a scape goat.

I know Yeovil are a League Two side but conceding a goal from the build up of a throw in is shocking.

Rene seems to have smoked something really strong in India, before running away 1 month into the small Indian Super League season.

In 15 years, when Jesse calls it a day, perhaps Iniesta will be lucky to be compared to Jesse.

COME AT ME BRO!!!!!

You missed the joke mate. I meant that we shouldn’t compare him to Messi cos he is that good and people should be comparing lesser players to Lingard now.

It’s incredible how good he has become. However, he needs to show this level against the top six or I couldn’t care less.

Barcelona, Champions League final 2011.

Also, when did Jesse's close control get so good and consistently good?

The main thing that's improved is his finishing. All the movement and energy is pointless if the end product is lacking like on several occasions last season when he couldn't buy a goal. I remember Jose interrupting an interview of his in pre-season to say 'he can't score a goal, but he's doing interviews'. Looks like Jesse took that message to heart.

What a ridiculous post.

Another one.

If someone can get the picture when he was about to shoot.. Was surrounded by about 5 Yeovil players..

Can be used in the Messi vs Lingard thread!!

I remember that vaguely but from my recollection it was more in jest I believe.

However I have to admit, in this form he is one of the first names on the team sheet. Would start him in the middle against Spurs with Alexis on the right and those two interchanging while Martial occupies the left and Lukaku leading the line.

Yeah it wasn't entirely serious but I think it was a very soft way of getting the point across. I agree with that lineup against Spurs.

I caught so much flak believing in this guy back in the day it feels so good seeing him put it all together consistently. He's always had great movement and the ability to score bangers. His confidence is through the roof right now and it was so good to see his assured play last night.

Almost scored one just after he came on when he made a good run from left to right.

Next game is at Wembley, so I think we can safely say Jessi has some more brilliance in store for us!

Just a pity he didn't break out a dance when he scored. He's lethal in front of goal. Game after game he's bagging goals. Long may it continue.
I really wanna see another Milly Rock celebration, but the other 3 members of the boy band weren't on the pitch (Martial, Young and Pogba).

Never been so happy to be proven wrong. I am still wary towards this just being the purple vein of form of all time though, or if he actually can sustain this level.
