He has surprised my by how well he is playing. This is really strange. I had never expected him to play so well, especially in the tough part of the season. Just proves anything is possible in football.
it's not strange that Jesse's playing well. At least not to those who understand football. i.e Jose Mourinho a ruthless manager who has stuck by Jesse in-spite of all the bile spewed by some fans regarding Lingard.

In the post match we learned that the boss gave him more or less a free role. Big trust there, he is one guy thriving under Jose. I love seeing Pogba Martial and Jesse linking up you can sense the chemistry there

I’m glad he is coming good, as others have said it’s only what he used to do as a youngster, but now doing it on the bigger stage which as we have seen with many others is not a certain step. The challenge will be keeping consistent and continuing to develop his game.

He may not be the most technical player, but he doesn’t need to be. He is quick, sharp minded and is a phenomenal finisher. If you were talking striking technical ability he has to be up there potential wise with any of the best players we have had over the years. Most of his goals have been in tough positions and important goals that have helped dictate the game, rather than simply icing on the cake tap ins!

There is only so long people can continue to say he's limited or doesn't have the technical ability.

My main gripe was he never affected the game in any way and was usually a bystander. He's been positive and great recently.
United fans moan about the poor movement yet they have routinely described the one player with the best movement on the team as shite.

Hold on a minute. Questions have been justifiably asked of Lindgard for a while now. He is 25 now, not some young guy breaking into the team. It's about time he begun to apply his talent on a more consistent basis. He has delivered some great moments for us, and now we need him to be more consistent. Does he want to be a fixture on the team sheet? Does he want to be a starter for England? A likeable character indeed, but he needs to retain this level of performance and really drive the team. He will have the whole fan base behind him too, so could be marvelously influential.

I want him to get those 'ugly' goals too. Lindgard should be thinking of hitting minimum 12 Prem goals per season. I'm pleased for him, and it's great to see him playing like this. But now I want some consistency.
You want consistency and he is just two goals short of your “target” with how many games started?

Technical. A technical player is a master of the techniques of the game (passing, trapping, shooting, dribbling, tackling the ball.) He has excellent touch, precise control, a fast work-rate of touches on the ball, and uses all sorts of body surfaces or edges.

Let's hope this definition ends the myopic argument that Jesse lacks technical ability. Jesse will only get better as his body fills in.....Sir Alex compared him to Jean Tigana for a reason.

I disagree with anyone saying he lacks technique, his ability to shoot accurately whilst running with the ball at a high speed is a trait that many so called technical players are lacking and it's something we've missed since Nani left.

Well you said that he didn’t have the ability to be the very best so it’s ok to ask in comparison to who? You’re kind of changing your story now by saying he doesn’t have as much technical ability as martial. Fine but you could say the same about 95% of the players in the league.
You’re not the first to insinuate that Lingard is not technical or has limited skills. It irks me that yous can’t quite get rid of your prejudices towards him and open your eyes fully

Totally agree with you. The poster you were replying to is one of many lightly praising Jesse whilst either bemoaning his technical ability or telling us he’s limited by this imaginary ceiling he’s perceived to have.

I don’t get how someone can measure whether someone has a ceiling or where it is. I also can’t work out where this deficiency in his technique is tbh.

The lad has had a proper schooling through the United ranks. His technique is excellent. You don’t score and assist like Jesse does if it’s poor. Is he the same sort of player as Martial (to use the example given)...? No, he’s not but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his technical ability, however that’s being measured. They just have different attributes, which is ok. Maybe they prefer other types of players. Fair enough but that doesn’t make Jesse an average player. Just different.

His major problem(s) for me were in his consistency and the position he was being asked to play, the wing position possibly accounting in part for his consistency issues. Looks better in the middle with license to roam.

He will have dips in form like EVERY player but I don’t think that makes him “limited“.

FWIW, I don’t think that it’s a coincidence that one of the few to step up through our sticky spell is a lad from the Academy, a true Red, schooled the United way. He’s been around enough winners at the club and knows what playing for United really means. A few more need to take his lead and step up too.

.....or this.....a less eye draining version of what I was attempting to say above....

He proved me and many others wrong and for that I’m forever grateful. It shows that many of us are way too inpatient and immature when we judge young prospects.

I have no excuses and with my 25 years of experience of spotting young talents (non football related biz) I should have known better then to let emotions get in front of my better knowledge.

Having Jesse in the team, especially now when he’s a automatic starter and a game changer, is a huge boost for our academy and the younger talents on our books. One of the clubs most important corner stones is to cement our image as a club who promotes and developing talents. I love that part of our history.

I can’t express enough how pleased I’m with our young guns. I see similarities with Martial, Bailly, Pogba, Lingard, Rashford and Lukaku with Roo& Ron. Maybe not as influential and talented but O’boy what I like when we have a group of young men who gel and develop together in front of our eyes. That’s on of the best parts if being a dedicated supporter.

Bluffers guide to being a keyboard warrior soccerball pundit.

1. Pick a famous and generally successful team to ‘support’. Expect them to maintain this standard.
2. Pick an original nickname
3. Find one or more players on that team to blame and to criticise for any shortcomings
4. Check a stats webpage and recycle regularly
5. Talk about ‘technique’ - (opposite to technique is “hoof-ball”)
6. Say team/player passes badly/backwards
7. Mention ‘first touch’
8. Perfect your timing re calls for removal of manager/bad team selection/etc etc
Oh and...9. Talk about “squad players” at every opportunity

Its a great thing to see, watching a kid grow and become things. Two years back, or even a bit further back, he was doing decent things. and i thought, OKay, here we have a terrific squad player. Today, he is still closer to being a squad player than be influential enough in our starting 11, or even just be in our starting 11. Its a great problem to have. A kid, who has a lot of ability, who is willing to wait and be patient to be called "just squad player types" and takes it in the chin and is able to work with it. Those are the reasons why am really happy for Lingard. Cos he never got carried away, or anything. He was okay, like a mini Fletcher working his way around people who would never think he'd mount to anything.

This season, he has surprised me amazingly. Of course he's been running with the ball pretty well the last 18 or so months. But this season, he has been very good. Competitive, bullish, in the way he dribbles. But more importantly, his thinking is simple/ and yet can be very intelligent to be part of a supreme elite european team(that has to use that cunning flair when it counter attacks). When we are doing ok, he makes things happen. But like the game against Southampton. He was just as lost and confused as any one else. Making lesser runs, or making lesser movements. When Southampton turned up to really defend in numbers and in deep, its not like he was able to break that single handedly, and change how the game could have gone. When he gets a bit better, and more mature, I think he has the ability to be influential enough to make such impact. Having said that, his finishing was always something that required constant attention/feedback/constructive criticism. In Moyes and LVG's seasons, he would get to great positions, and just missed easy goals time and again. He could have scored 6-10 goals in those period, and those were all match winning goals too, and he just didn't. So obviously we all stopped expecting way too much from him. He is now scoring some absolute beautiful goals, but still think he can also score some horrible goals, but do them better, in tighter games. Hope he fixes that. Even against Southampton, he should have scored a complete crucial easy goal. those are going to be the moments that define how he becomes. People are happy to see what kind of footballer he is becoming. But its a thankless world, and he has to keep reaching for stars and still doing basic things, in a cut throat environment, to keep getting his chances. Or we'll just say, "Nope, not going to be good enough to be a starter here in big games". Once he does that, he probably can do any fecking thing in the world if he wants to.

I like him in a free role and he is really thriving from it right now. It would be great to see him get to 15 goals, he can achieve that.

Are you saying that we should never question Jose Mourinho decision, because he knows more than fans?

How about Moyes or LvG. Do you know more than them?

Im a big fan of Lingards. He may not be the most technically gifted footballer but he has a fantastic workrate, brilliant pace, can score and create goals and also has a great character.

Always knew he had it in him. A post of mine from a year ago. But yano no big deal

No just you, you couldn’t believe it so I was curious to how you felt about it now.
Im just curious where you were at the beginning of the season when he wasnt playing at all? Its only the last two months where he has picked it up.

I've always been a fan so I'm enjoying his performances at the moment. He does have weirdly long alien arms though.

He needs to stay in the team, and beyond this season if he continues.

I think of all of the great players we have discussed to replace him, but I can’t see any of them replacing what Jesse offers, which is absolutely vital to the attack. I think we should add quality, but not at Jesse’s expense.

A narrow front three of:

———Jessi———
-Dybala—-Martial-

Would be a dream - fluid and have 20 each in it if Jessi can keep up his goals.

All of you from "a year ago" who have come to have yourselves a gloat can get fecked. I've been banging this drum for years. Join the queue.

Well, I certainly didn’t expect such a return from Lingard in the last couple of months. Happy to have been wrong in my assessment of how good he can be.

I still have a nagging suspicion that this is a bit of purple patch, but few things would make me happier than being proven wrong again.

Kudos to the young man, he’s been on fire of late.

He did say 12 Prem goals, but he should still be able to reach that. Jesse has been great lately, I hope he can keep it up.

Agree. Though not a chance in hell Mou makes any future plans that don't include lukaku, even though it's debatable if he'll ever be good enough for us or bring out the best of the others.
