Its a great thing to see, watching a kid grow and become things. Two years back, or even a bit further back, he was doing decent things. and i thought, OKay, here we have a terrific squad player. Today, he is still closer to being a squad player than be influential enough in our starting 11, or even just be in our starting 11. Its a great problem to have. A kid, who has a lot of ability, who is willing to wait and be patient to be called "just squad player types" and takes it in the chin and is able to work with it. Those are the reasons why am really happy for Lingard. Cos he never got carried away, or anything. He was okay, like a mini Fletcher working his way around people who would never think he'd mount to anything.
This season, he has surprised me amazingly. Of course he's been running with the ball pretty well the last 18 or so months. But this season, he has been very good. Competitive, bullish, in the way he dribbles. But more importantly, his thinking is simple/ and yet can be very intelligent to be part of a supreme elite european team(that has to use that cunning flair when it counter attacks). When we are doing ok, he makes things happen. But like the game against Southampton. He was just as lost and confused as any one else. Making lesser runs, or making lesser movements. When Southampton turned up to really defend in numbers and in deep, its not like he was able to break that single handedly, and change how the game could have gone. When he gets a bit better, and more mature, I think he has the ability to be influential enough to make such impact. Having said that, his finishing was always something that required constant attention/feedback/constructive criticism. In Moyes and LVG's seasons, he would get to great positions, and just missed easy goals time and again. He could have scored 6-10 goals in those period, and those were all match winning goals too, and he just didn't. So obviously we all stopped expecting way too much from him. He is now scoring some absolute beautiful goals, but still think he can also score some horrible goals, but do them better, in tighter games. Hope he fixes that. Even against Southampton, he should have scored a complete crucial easy goal. those are going to be the moments that define how he becomes. People are happy to see what kind of footballer he is becoming. But its a thankless world, and he has to keep reaching for stars and still doing basic things, in a cut throat environment, to keep getting his chances. Or we'll just say, "Nope, not going to be good enough to be a starter here in big games". Once he does that, he probably can do any fecking thing in the world if he wants to.
