I thought he played well. Linked up play well, some much needed quick passes, great movement and created a chance.
Agreed, when he came off we just lost that bit of intensity we'd been making.
Martial started to bring it back for us but it was too late unfortunately.

He was subdued today I thought, had a couple of moans but wasn't quite the ball of energy he usually is.

He was poor imo, he never created a chance, he butchered it, was a simple pass with quite a bit of room for error and he still managed to overhit it, it was only rashfords pace that enabled to get anything on it

I think he is just too basic with his passing technique to be anything special for us.
Top shooting technique at times, great movement, constant worker but lacking in the x-factor in his passing, in my view.

Squad player af very best. He lacks quality, he has a good couple months this season but all those who champion him for first 11 then be prepared for what we saw yesterday from him. If he lined up for Everton/Newcastle etc against us we would not be concerned about him in the slightest. That’s the hallmark for me for a United attacker and Lingard and Mata for that case don’t cut it as a regular starter if we are to win things at the highest level again.

I agree. I like the lad and I like his attitude but he’s just so clumsy with the ball in that position. Poor decision making, sloppy in tight areas. He’s had his moments this year and he has that bit of quality in him but good players are able to do the basic things consistently well and for me, he doesn’t.

As a team, we have to find a way of being more efficient with the ball, being more clinical, more ruthless.

Agree 100%

United have to be 11 players with United-quality, we can’t have an Everton-player in there. The problem is that we have like four of them, Lingard obviously being one. He just isn’t good enough, not intelligent enough. Have him in the squad and let him play in the cups and over Christmas, but he’s never good enough to start 20+ games in the league.

I think he's one of the few players Jose has got performing beyond their level and its still not really good enough to be relied on. Decent squad player and he may continue to improve.

Was surpised to see him subbed,he made lots of runs behind the defence, tried quick one twos
But rashford just didn't have the confidence to pass it even two yards and sanchez just kept the ball long enough for chelsea defenders to take it off him
Martial and mata should have come on for those two

Fa cup final stats:
44 touches
0 shots
0 dribbles
3 fouls
0 crosses completed

He epitomises everything that is wrong with our attack.

Also set up one of our biggest chances in the match.

There is talk of us being interested in Sessegnon who has 16 goals and 7 assists in 4314 minutes at a much lower level but we wouldn't be interested in Rashford who got 13 goals and 9 assists in only 2676 minutes in much harder competitions. Yea, makes sense.

If Rashford and Lingrd were putting up numbers of 20+ G+A at a midtable club then they'd be getting interest from the top clubs. Zaha is being linked to top clubs and his scoring record is worse and he played as a striker.

We wouldn't be interested in buying him off them either. The same can be said of Rashford and McTominay. No club overrates their young players like we do.

What about Shaw and Martial? Or does that only count when someone else is doing the overrating?

I don't think our not winning a trophy has anything to do with him playing. He was one of our better performers for lengthy stretches.

Well that's the crux of the matter, these 'better' performances of Lingard won't earn him a place in any top club but here we are praising him. Our standards are rock bottom at the moment.

We're talking about his form this year - not who he could hypothetically displace.

My first post was a reply to you saying he's one of our better performances and I said his better performances won't earn him a place in most top clubs. I really don't see anything outstanding about his form this season. He had a few good weeks early on, scored a few great goals but spent most of the season being Lingard.Like someone said if we continue with him as a regular starter with these better performances of his next season we won't be winning shit either.

Its just a cheap shot to have a go at Lingard, who most rational fans acknowledge had a career best season when the likes of Martial, Rashford, and Pogba seem to be regressing. Whether Lingard is in the squad or not has nothing to do with our overall problems of not playing with enough squad solidarity. I get that he's an easy whipping boy to take out our frustration of not having won a trophy but he is actually not the least of our problems, in fact he isn't a problem at all as we need quality squad players who have been here a while, understand the system, and can contribute 10-15 goals.

I'm not having cheap shots at Lingard, I'm stating my opinion of Lingard in the Lingard thread. Bringing Martial, Rashford and Pogba into this discussion is just diversionary as they all have their own threads. I think Lingard is average, like some other of our players and persisting with players like him and expecting Madrid/City type of results is simply not going to happen as much as we will it to. I thought he was average when we won two trophies last season and I think he's average now so I don't get what you mean by him being a whipping boy. I actually don't mind him as a squad player at all but he's not a squad player here is he?

I see him as a squad player who will get a fair few appearances depending on form and the form of others who play the same position.

He's the starting right winger for a team that got 81 points in the league. He's a lot better than people give him credit for. We're noticably worse when he's not on the pitch.

FWIW, he compares pretty well with similar players in the top 4.

Goals + Assists per 90 minutes:

Lingard 0.67
De Bruyne 0.64
Alli 0.61
Mane 0.72

He is not better than people give him credit for, he is a squad player at best, getting too much minute starting for a team than finished second. He wouldn't get into Liverpool's front 3, City's front 3-4, nor he could dispose any of the Spurs starting attackers, and it's not something to slate him for. He is what he is, and he is very useful as a squad player.

Great squad player to have but feck me we should be aiming higher for a starting RW. I have a bad feeling the RW position won't be addressed this summer.

For me he's not a winger. He could do a job bursting through centrally but he's never been a typical winger. Normally that would be ok as you would just rely on full back but our full backs offensively are dire. Shaw can sometimes be threatening but in general the club have got sloppy and not looked to improve on players who are NOT the be all and end all. We wanted more end product and got it. Now we have a target and its up to Jesse to reach it OR keep raising the bar. It can be done but he's not a winger. That's not his fault. It's just how it is

That's part of the problem imo. He's not a classical winger and yet he's not at the level where Jose would ever consistently play him in the middle.

Who else's would it be ?

There's no evidence whatsover that Lingard is the reason we weren't successful. He was one of our best players for a good stretch of the season.

I don't rate Lingard as a player capable of being a starter in a Manchester United team that can win or even challenge for a league, you do. Fair play.

Good stretch where abouts @Raoul? Lingard has 84 premier league starts and 13 goals in his career as a United attacker. That’s dreadful if we are being honest. So a goal return if one goal in every seven games. This season he scored goals against who? Let’s get real he’s not the first needed upgraded on but he’s certainly one of them. Very average player imo.
