Couple of nice touches and one good run that he should have scored frrom but his first touch let him down, overall didn't really impress.

I like Lingard but if Martial gets dropped for his performances then Lingard should be getting dropped for his performance tonight

He should've been taken off at half time after that first half performance, he barely touched the ball.

Did well to win the ball back at times but his end product is a bit shite.

He looked tired in that second half, which was worrying given hes not been playing game after game.

The truth with Lingard is he's the kind of player that would be very useful in a potent attacking team as his pace and movement will provide him with many chances. With our current team, Lingard starting in a front 3 is probably as underwhelming as it gets for the front 6 teams. He really doesn't offer enough and he lacks the ability and boldness to take it upon himself to create chances for the team. He seems to be heading in the Cleverley and Schneiderlin route to me which is a shame as I was always a big fan of him in the youth teams.

Has Lingard ever been amazing for us? Like, has he ever had a game where you've thought "Wow, Lingard was incredible today"...? I might be wrong, but I'm struggling to think of one... and that's my biggest problem with Lingard, he's mostly ok, he's often a bit rubbish and he's sometimes pretty good, maybe even very good.... but is he ever amazing?

No, of course not. He's a hard worker who can have great moments.

A nothing player for me.

We always look much worse in the final third when he's playing, happens every time he plays.

No, he's never amazing, and never will be.

But he's a decent squad player, apparently.

No he hasn't but of course his fans will be along soon to talk about that one cross and the FA Cup Final goal. He's had some good moments but honestly, nah he's never had a great game. I do recall he did play well against City I think, last season but it was hardly anything great.

He's in one of his piss poor patches of form at the moment when he looks absolutely abysmal. Had his shot went in against Stoke his fans would have felt vindicated and told us all we are 'haters' etc. But it would have masked the fact that I honestly think he's at best stagnated this season and at worst, regressed from last season.

We have moved from 4-2-3-1 to more of a 4-3-3. With that extra man in attack Lingard could get away with keeping the game ticking along, but now him being in a front 3 he just doesn't create nearly enough to warrant so many appearances.
Especially when paired with a timid fullback like Darmian, that side just goes numb in attack.

Don't get me wrong here I completely understand the dislike for Lingard - he isn't the standard a lot of us expect from a first team Manchester United winger when we've had the likes of Giggs, Ronaldo, Kanchelskis, Beckham etc. However I think that is where I get confused at the hate somewhat as it's clear he isn't a 'first choice United winger.'

Lingard is sufficient. I don't mean that as a positive or negative really it's just an apt description of his ability for his role in the team. He's a good player who is somewhat inconsistent and nothing more. I'm more than happy for us to continually keep Lingard within the squad as back-up. In an ideal world we'd all love every position to be a situation of Cole v Yorke v Sheringham v Solskjaer, or James v Isco, or the entire Spanish National Team's midfield 2008-2012 etc. But it just isn't realistic to have two world class players competing in every position especially when the game is as competitive as it is today - somethings got to give in those situations. Let's compare to the other teams - the likes of Navas, Oxlade-Chamberlain, N'Koudou... the list goes on and it isn't exactly inspiring confidence. Especially when you consider the Price vs Standard of other team's back up players.

So I say this: why don't we keep a home-grown (he helps with the necessary quotas lest we forget), able, local lad who wants to play for the club rather than selling him and then running the risk of signing an expensive, overpaid and underperforming, foreign back-up winger?

Look at the other teams in the League again. Liverpool lost Sane and have no-one to really fill that role so they have to A) Change their system to accommodate the missing player or B) Play someone not totally able in the position. Similarly if City were without the likes of Nolito, Sane and what not they'd have Navas to call on to fill shoes he really isn't capable of filling. Whereas here at United if we were playing Mhyki and Martial as first choice and lost either one of them we can slot Lingard on either wing - while yes he isn't close to the quality of those players I'm still confident he would do a capable job to fill in for the time being, or when they require a rest.

I'd always want proper 'United quality' first choice wingers (or wide forwards or whatever you want to call them in whatever system we end up playing) but I'd be more than happy to keep Lingard at the club in a squad-player role. He is what he is and I would much rather keep that than risk other alternatives totally unnecessarily. That's not to say we shouldn't talk about his performances, criticism, or indeed praise him whenever necessary but talk of selling or upgrading on him isn't what we should be considering UNLESS there was a totally viable and safe alternative that presented itself.

I think even those of us who think Lingard is nowhere near good enough have zero problem with him being a squad player @Jam, the problem is, he starts way to many games when the likes of Mata, Miki & Martial are fit and need game time themselves.

Even Rooney in 2017 is a much better player than him for me.

Then the issue lies within team selection and therefore Mourinho rather than the criticism of Lingard - it is not his fault he is getting game time ahead of better players and continued criticism on the lad for that isn't justified.

Mourinho picks the team. On the other hand as well we do not know the inner happenings of Carrington and therefore the relationships or training performances and mentalities of the players - perhaps there is a justified reason for the selection of Lingard? But again that would go through Mourinho's philosophies and interpretations. It is an argument that belongs elsewhere and I think that particular argument really reflects badly on Lingard because it does frustrate people at him rather than where it should be a lot of the time. But again don't get me wrong I'm not one of those people who'll ardently defend a player they like blindly despite facts and reasoning - I laid my thoughts on Lingard enough in my last post.

Re: Rooney v Lingard is an interesting one that I could honestly see going either way due to personal preference of what they want from that position. It's a really subjective one. Personally, if we had a match tonight and the only option was Rooney or Lingard on the wing then I would choose Lingard.

One of those players that I can't decide, if he's good or rubbish.

The argument that the manager picks him ahead of other players is odd. It's true and all but it doesn't make Lingard exempt from criticism. He hasn't been good enough this season. I expected so much more from him this season but he's not performed.

So we can't criticise Jesse when he plays poorly? We should blame the manager?

I've got a novel idea, do what I do, blame both.

To be the people who say Lingard 'is a good squad player', Juan Mata is the epitomy of a good squad player. Comes in, generally makes assists or scores when he plays and has the ability to change a game. Lingard has none of that apart from a good moment once in a while, which alot of Premier League players would do given the chance. I was of the opinion that if Lingard could continue the good form he showed in the first month of the season then I'd be happy to stay. But like most of last season, he has been poor.

He and Pogba just did a new celebration video on social media and it's rightly getting a lot of criticism from people like Rio Ferdinand, Gerrard etc. And I fully agree with those criticising. Sometimes I feel like Lingard's social media antics deserve a smacking. He's quite an annoying person. Concentrate on your Football instead of these lame celebrations.

Get a grip, Rio was making spoof videos for MUTV and he still acts like a teenager on instagram now. Gerrard could do with some cheering up, it might have won him a title.

Criticising players for daring to have having fun, ridiculous.

Yeah, the club should get rid of all sponsorships, promotional work, outreach work and interviews so that everyone can focus solely on football 24/7!

If Lingard is sh*t in a match it is because he is either sh*t altogether or out of form (the choice is yours). It has little to do with how he spent 10 minutes during his free-time with a friend/colleague he grew up with.
Feel free to criticise his social media persona and actions but don't try to conflate them with anything to do with what happens on the football pitch unless there is clear indication of a link between the two.
He could be the world's most annoying social media presence and it still wouldn't make a jot of difference to his on-pitch performance as the two things are in no way interconnected unless you are seriously going to suggest he couldn't possibly produce the odd silly video and still be fully committed to football.

Were you mad when Bailly and Herrera did this?

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. Lingard gets way too much hate here. No, he won't be world class, but why do people begrudge him a place in the squad. After all, I'd rather an academy graduate play back-up to Mkhitaryan/Martial rather than someone who we bring in for £20m and yet won't play.

The guy scores big goals in big games, and while he shouldn't be a regular starter, I've no problem with him being in and around the squad

Think it was more of an issue when we were struggling and he was starting before the aforementioned players in big games. Jose seems to have stopped that. Plus big goals in big games come on if you said that about Mata fair enough.

Rio was a world class player and earned that right. Jesse has what less than 50 appearances and most have been average or as a sub.

So only world class players get to have fun and joke around?

Ok got it.

What Lingard does in his spare time is nobody else's fecking business.

They are free to have their fun. I'm free to think it's a bit weird for men in their mid 20s to doing that shit.

They'd think I was a right boring old cnut though!
