In your opinion, of course. On here he's miles down the list for the MOTM award with 4% of the votes, so obviously not many agree.
My opinion, the commentators and the footballing press this morning. Why would I consider the Caf's footballing opinion, this place lost any semblance of sense on footballing matters over a decade ago and the footballing debate is now dominated by the shear preponderance of idiots.

I know it's Monday morning and all but jeez man, chill out.

He was great in the first half. He and Mata kept our offense ticking with their movement and passing. Just a shame that both of them regularly lose steam pretty quickly after one half.

I love how any argument countering your own is immediately deemed irrational. As for Lingard being the weak link in yesterday's XI, did you watch the game? He was our standout player at the heart of almost all our best moves and was our MOM alongside Bailly, bloody unlucky to have his effort saved by a keeper on the form of his life and should have had a handful of assists too were it not for the same keeper and some less than sterling finishing from Ibra and Pogba.

Long term Martial probably will ease him out of the team but in recent weeks Martial has looked well off the pace and whether it's his lack of play with France over the summer or his fecking up his personal life is irrelevant, until he finds his form of last season he has no guaranteed spot in our team and Lingard should be starting ahead of him so long as he keeps up the performances. Same thing for Mkhitaryan who has yet to show up for United this season.

I did indeed watch the game & saw enough of Lingard on - and off - the ball to know that as industrious as he is, he just doesn't have the skill set needed to become a Utd great. He's another Welbeck. Fast, busy, but ultimately not good enough.

Nothing irrational about my points. Just like there's nothing irrational about you thinking Lingard was MOTM and should have had a goal and a couple of assists had it not been for other players stopping his shots and not scoring goals. Inconsiderate of them to deprive Lingard of such glory.

We've seen twice in 2 games from Rooney, that an assist doesn't mean you've played well.

His worldies against Chelsea, Palace and Leicester plus any number of superb assists (for Mata against Leicester, for starters) suggest otherwise.

What do you call a player who is consistently good, generally amongst the most useful in any given performance, and produces moments of top class to provide goals and assists when you need them?

I don't want to be negative towards Lingard, but he hasn't been consistently good for the first team.

Disputable points.... shall we gloss over his 'performance' against City?
He has flashes of decency, but too few and far between for me. A Wellbeck/Nani character.

Sorry, But no.

He has had a handful of good games, the majority have been very average though. He has improved this season IMO but still has too many average games for my liking. I feel he does have a place in the squad (if he continues on this years performances, last years weren't good enough), But certainly isn't a starter for us if we want to challenge for the league.

Christ, you're massively overrating him. You really think he can become a 'great'? Personally, I think he would do well to still be here in 2/3 seasons, let alone become a great.

You think he'll become a United great? Up there with Law, Robson and Scholes?

I quite like him as a player but he'll have to dramatically improve to reach that level.

That's your spin on it, and if you have to cite those players then you may as well include the entire present squad;DDG and Rooney apart.

There's a reason well respected coaches have picked him to do a job. On Sunday he was excellent against Stoke with his movement and ability to work.

PS: why didn't you include Keane,Giggs,Charlton as well? ;)

I'm not sure what you mean pal. I just mentioned a few of our past greats and asked the poster if he really believes Lingard has the ability to be up there with them.

But it's hardly a good argument regarding Lingaard. Mentioning 3 all time greats of English football is not a stick to beat a player with

I think you need to read back a few posts and specifically the poster I responded to.

I'm not just randomly comparing him to our all time greats.

Is it impossible to agree on that he's a squad player & he might lack in techniques or finishing, but his off the ball movements sure can add depths to our offense?

Weak link in yesterday's XI.

Yes, he's industrious, but is that really enough for a starting place? Not for me.
His touch is poor & he's often not on the same wavelength as other players in terms of checking runs.

Cue the irrational "local lad" & "puts in a shift" & "FA Cup final" arguments. Martial is a far better option & should keep Lingard off the team in my opinion.

Lots of aimless running around with little benefit to the team overall.
He's not just industrious, and his movement is anything but aimless. He is the antidote to static team play because he does the simple pass and support so well. As does Rashford, to be honest.

His off the ball movement is quality shame his end product doesn't match, or he would be one hell of a player

How many times did the commentator say he should have scored that chance? It annoys me how commentators act like those chances are tap ins or something. Its an on the run over the shoulder volley attempt from like a 35 yard pass. In what world is that an easy chance and he should have scored it?

In the deluded world of the English commentator and pundit

He's playing with confidence, desire and self-belief which is nice and an increasingly rare thing to be able to say about one of our players.

I like Lingard and want him to stay around purely because of that winning goal at Wembley, but how is Antonio not starting ahead of him? :wenger:

Lingard is a better player that's why.
