January....

Think the best we can hope for in January is Caciedo, a quick CB as Bailly unlikely to stay fit for a prolonged period of time and promoting Laird to give us an attacking option at RB. I think the fact we haven't seen Williams play there at all suggests he is off on loan when the window opens.

Isn't Laird injured at the moment? I just think him and Williams are in need of loans, if we get the CB though maybe Ole will use Axel there in some games to rotate AWB, but you don'tthink Norwich would take £15M for Aarons?

I wouldn't be averse to using Axel there if we brought in a CB but would prefer a proper option really

Is there less rumours than usually? And yes, january is usually a bit quiet but still. Window opens very soon.

We won't get the likes of Upamecano, Grealish, Sancho or Konate in January, however there are opportunities for

Milenkovic
Badiashile
Bissouma

Isn't there a lot of rumours about Upamecano going to Bayern in the summer?

I think this could possibly be an interesting window. I am not saying United can get anyone quality on the cheap, but there has to be some teams out there desperate for an influx of cash. If there is a player out there they had in mind for the summer, and the team is not competing for their league or other trophies, might be a good time to approach them and see if we can beef up the team for the second half of the season.

Unfortunately the majority of our rumoured summer targets are currently at teams either competing for their domestic league or european trophies

Yeah, probably right. But, even that being the case, there has to be some teams that are hurting bad from a cash flow standpoint that may part with someone they know they will lose in the summer to help alleviate the issue. Maybe if we had the list of names we could help out.

Looking at recent reports I would say the summer targets are Grealish/Sancho, in regards to a CB/CDM I honestly haven't got a clue but seems we have moved away from Upamecano/Alaba due to a combination of wage demands and reservations about them.

It's going to be an awful window. Summer was very hit and miss for big moves due to covid, the exception being ourselves, and the pandemic has not eased at all, and given the Jan window is quiet in general. This will be the quietest January window ever, IMO. Unless all the big free agents agree future moves this month, that may make it interesting and give us something to discuss.

WBA, Sheff U, Newcastle, Burnley and that lot may do a few loans in or cheap deals, but i think all the 'top' sides will stay quiet unless they can buy to sell for tidy sums. I think the window will do well to see more than 10 deals done in terms of first team signings across the 20 clubs.

Hoping for a title catalyst in January, if United can get through Villa and Burnley unscathed that is.

I think Caicedo and Diallo would be a good January, I can see Romero leaving too in January (he's training in Argentina I believe) a similar story to Rojo.

Issue is for United they're buying a lot of potential, but nothing that will earn points this season, that's my major concern, Diallo, Pellistri and Caicedo (if he signs) won't be in the EPL for a while but they will be playing in cup games (all seem to have good potential, but it isn't an immediate fix).

The right-wing is still ineffective and should be addressed in January (unless Pellistri or Diallo are ready)

I just really worry what happens if Bailly breaks down again with injury outside of this window, that would basically mean we would be down to 3 CB's which is clearly not enough for a squad wanting to battle on multiple fronts this season

I suspect we will sign only caicedo and diallo but would be a huge boost if we could sign a rb, cb or rw. I winder if there are any good players in those positions who are likely to be available on loan

Which do you think we need the most out of those three positions?

I hope the board can support Ole and the team and help us make at least one first team signing.

Among the spots we need to improve, I think CB and RW require the most immediate attention. For RB cover - we still have Williams although somehow Ole is more hesitant to use him this season vs last.

For CB - we should totally sign Milenkovic - think he is coming into the last 18 months of his contract. We can send them Bailly if it helps solves their need for a replacement.

For RW - let’s hope Amad can hit the ground running or Mason can recover his best form.

Yeah Milenkovic/Pau Torres are definitely signings that we could make in January but does feel like most of our CB targets such as Kounde/Konate aren't going to be obtainable until the summer unfortunately

I would say centre back or right back depending on how bad lindelofs injury is. Desperate for a right back who is better going forward but the idea of relying on bailly or axel to stay fit makes me shudder

Milenkovic has played a fair bit or RB as well I believe. Perhaps when he was younger but could offer dual cover.

Yeah can only see us going into the market for a CB if Lindelof is out for a while, similar to what we saw with the injuries to Scott & Pogba around christmas last season. Like you I also shudder at the thought of relying on Victor & Axel to stay fit but looks like Ole is prepared to take that risk.

I'd happily see us sign a couple more youngsters alongside Diallo. Caicedo and Yusuf Demir have both been linked and look good prospects.

January in:

I want James Ward-Prowse, slot him in as a Magic replacement play him alongside Fred.

Pedro Neto. Looks like he could develop into a real live wire.

Allen Saint Maximum. Attackers who can commit players one v one.

Jarrod Bowen. Again, a player who can commit players one v one.

Probably need a CB too - any suggestions?

January out: James, Jones, Rojo, Matic, Lingard out.
It’s the optimism that’ll kill ya

What is your personal take on the Caicedo situation just out of interest

As in why we haven't completed the deal yet? I don't know, he looks a talent. From the sound of it we've not yet chosen to complete the deal which seems strange. Could be something seemingly trivial like the fact he's a right footed midfielder. Not including Bruno (incidentally right footed) who plays further forward we've got two left footers in Matic and Fred, two right footers in McTominay and van de Beek and Pogba who's two footed. Pogba's obviously leaving and the two oldest (Matic and Fred) are both left footers. Assuming Pogba and Matic will both be gone in a couple of seasons that would mean that we'd have only one left footed midfielder in Fred who by then would be aging, and McTominay, van de Beek, Caicedo and Mejbri all right footed. If it's a statistical anomaly that we have a balance in midfield when the majority of players are right footed then loading up on more right footed players isn't an issue. If it was done deliberitely to promote a balanced team then it could be viewed as a problem that we'd have only one midfielder who's strongest on his left side.

It's at least as likely that it's a paperwork issue though to be fair.

Might also be waiting for players to leave first, can't keep signing players without having players leave.

Yeah, although with a 19 year old who's just arrived from South America you'd expect a period of adjustment anyway, so probably wouldn't be walking straight into the starting line-up.

Aarons won't go for £15m. I'd expect over £25m.

Big Sam is after a centre back, could this be the window that Jones or Rojo finally go?!

Convinced the only way we sign a CB in January is if Ole has got genuine concerns about Lindelof & Bailly's fitness for the second half of the season, otherwise I fully expect us to stick to our plan of waiting until the right option becomes available in the summer.

Indeed. I even start to doubt if Woodward will allow bigger spending on one player during the crisis despite glaring need of a complete defense package.

Who knows, perhaps next summer window will look exactly like the previous one. Looking for a bargain, plus one or two elite youngsters joining in.

Yeah there is always the possibility that this summer window could end up like the last one due to the financial losses, really annoys me that because we haven't got the right people in place for transfers we aren't flexible enough with our transfer strategy What I mean by this is it shouldn't take injuries to a couple of key players in order for us to go into the market but certainly seems that is indeed the case.

I'm sure its been mentioned on here but any wingers we could bring in on loan? So desperate for a genuine wide player, what about Perisic? Inter linked with a loan deal for Lingard so a swap deal could make sense all round.

I don't feel that there is much difference between getting Badiashile/Torres out of Monaco & Villarreal respectively and Bruno out of Sporting as we did last January, however you get the feeling Utd haven't even explored the possibility and have decided to wait until the summer for a Konate/Kounde.

This has to be the quietest transfer speculation Jan I can remember for obvious reasons and I just think back to the summer and reflect on the impact our signings have had and apart from Cavani in one game I cannot think of one.
I like Martial but I think the next few months are going to be crucial for him because if he does not start banging the goals in Ole is going to have to look at bringing in another striker in the summer.

I still think we will wait for Haaland but like you say we have to make a decision before then
