I think you are. People commenting about the price we pay, maybe not all, but many have a valid point. Why? Let's say we paid the 14m euros for Maguire, Leicester paid and and we bought him directly from Hull. The pressure to succeed, the attention to his performances would have been different than to the 80m CB Manchester United bought. It's been said million times, the expectations people build are different and therefor the scrutiny.
Watching Mata last night is exactly what i want from our new central midfielder, the ability to retain the ball and make quick short passes, then "be there" at right time and right place, all these require technical skill and brains. 2 things that McTomminay, Fred, and to extend Pogba lack of.

In reality nobody is worth the money being paid nowadays. But the money being paid directly influences imo what are we going to get in performances, therefor my comment about expectations. Very clear many people haven’t watched him outside of the games vs United and some freekick highlights, he’s not a winger by any stretch. He’s a realistic signing in the mould of what we need, great work rate offensively and defensively, excellent on the ball, has the added bonus of his set pieces. He’s not the fastest player although he’s not slow i.e. Matic but is super vocal and organises that Soton team. £75m is a joke, anything under £50m would be good value for a player who would immediately improve us and would probably end up captain given our lack of leadership.

He's a really useful cog in a functioning system- something ETH will hopefully bring - and just the type of signing we should be making. This squad needs a real mentality shift, to do that we need to bring in a number of players with the right mentality, and JWP would be a great start I my opinion.
But of course, the price needs to be right. £40m ish, perhaps with a few small addons tacked on would be about the limit for me.

Maybe he should - I'd rather go to either of them if I were him. Much better fit for both systems I think and more likely to succeed in those environments as things stand.

Well there's plenty of people saying that they don't want a single more overpriced overrated English signing, so it's not exactly false.
Need to stop making these overpaid transfers. 30m plus bonus at max.10m would be fair.

Or maybe it's because clubs needing a certain number of home grown players plus PL clubs being rich drives prices for English players to crazy levels for even medium level of quality. Most people were very much in favor of both Sancho and Grealish and that shows it's not about some hidden or overt anti English agenda but rather about price in relation to talent.

If he hadn't signed that new contract at the beginning of the season he would be a very smart pick-up for a good price. But by signing that new contract he's basically priced himself out of a move as I doubt Southampton will accept any realistic figure.
Completely agree. JWP & Neves would be good signings anyway and both buy into ETH's system / philosophy. Until we get playing ETH's way and finishing comfortably in the top 4 we won't be able to sign 'world class' players.
Took Klopp 2/3 years to get major signings in Van Dijk and Alisson.
As a Saints fan I don't want to see him go but for the right price wouldn't be too upset. I think he'd be the perfect signing for Man Utd, and would be a step in the right direction for you as a team. I've seen a few comments of he'd be a waste of money or that he'd be another Schneiderlin signing which I think is a long way from the truth. JWP offers an unrivalled consistency, his injury record is ridiculous. At one point he'd gone 100 consecutive games for Southampton playing every minute of every game. He is always in the top 10 for average distance covered and I believe at the moment is fifth in the league for it. He covers so much ground both defensively and offensively, and has become a master at the last-ditch tracking back tackle/interception. He is used to playing in a high press team so will suit the style of Ten Hag, and will have the dedication which is required to play in the style.

If he was looking for a move, and with his reputation and form in the past few months drawing attention, signing this new contract extension may have been a poor move.
My only conclusion is I don't think he has any intention in moving on. Seems relatively settled being Southampton's top earner and their main go-to guy.
I do like him as a player but outside of his brilliant set-pieces and work-rate he is rather so-so.

As a CM/DM you are expected to control the midfield or being destroyer in midfield, basically trying to win the midfield battle. Not to cross and take set pieces. Crossing and set pieces are just bonus for CM/DM. His passing, positioning, first touch, pace, physicality, defending are Cleverley esque.
