Jadon Sancho| Staying at Dortmund for now

I doubt it’s true but I’m assuming it wouldn’t be Dortmund waiting. It would be his agent delaying moving him on until he’s eligible for this bonus.

Still wouldn't make sense. Dortmund could have paid that earlier and priced it into what they asked for Sancho. Or we could have paid it as a signing bonus.

Seems every player is off the boil right now and saving themselves for the start next week, I wouldn't even blame southgate too much.

Two nation league games just before the season after a short break from a congested end of last season is absolutely not needed and I'm sure Sancho, Kane and all the others feel that way.

Watching him struggle for England got me thinking, usually even in our not so great look post fergie most of the players we signed came from inferior teams and we would comment on their performances stuff like "look who he plays with he'll have a much better team around him here". Now I'm not saying we're all bad but Dortmund do play a very thrilling and cohesive style of football so when/if we sign him I'm a little worried we'll see plenty of the 5/10 performances from him like we see with the national team, at the beginning at least.
How many of Dortmund’s front 6 outside of Sancho would get into our side? One of Witsel/Delaney holding and Haaland? We’re a pretty good team, certainly far better than England.

So first it was some bollocks about agent fees, now it’s down to a mere million pounds in bonuses? Makes little sense, his wages alone would count for much of it over two months.

Can’t believe we’ve held back on a transfer for a 1M bonus payment, we’re talking about a 100m+ transfer that could easily have been pencilled into a deal by now.

The wage rise he would get at United would have probably covered most of that already.

There was a moment where Sancho had made a great run and was looking for the return from Kane who did his usual of feck all and running in to trouble instead of releasing the ball and my first thought was. “Dont you worry Sancho, Martial would have found you there.”

Hopefully he’s thinking the same.

However on their day a case could be made for Brandt and Reus. Haaland would certainly be competition for Martial depending on how you want to play but no way would any of the Midfield out Pogba or Bruno.

For Dortmund to wait until Sancho gets his bonus.
It’s not Dortmund who have waited according to the narrative. Last summer Sancho signed an extension to the contract to add a year till 2023 and increase his salary. According to the news story, the contract extension including a bonus payment if he completed a full year and got to 10 England caps. Once he hit those two milestones he was due a €1.5m payment.

So apparently Sancho and his agent wanted Utd to wait before putting an official bid in otherwise Sancho would have lost the payment if a move was agreed before his England cap against Iceland.

That’s what the story says anyway.

I’m with you it’s nonsense. It’s more likely logistically it made more sense for Sancho to stay at Dortmund and get a pre-season. The most likely explanation is we think the price is going to be lower and are playing the waiting game. I don’t see this happening soon if that’s the case.

Would rather see us sign a world class CB but the only one available (?) would be Koulibaly and he is too old to justify a huge fee. I rate Greenwood higher than Sancho but would be delighted if we get him. I doubt he will be our van Dijk signing.

Can't believe that people would take a negative view of a person holding out for contractually obligated bonus payments from their employer. :wenger:

Just make it 121.5 million, Ed! :wenger:

Mike Phelan starting to follow Sancho is definitely a positive development though
I did think that too but then noticed he’s also following Sterling and Firmino and a few other non Utd players too!

Can't we just get a bunch of United fans together and each contribute a quid to make this happen sooner?

It’s not only Sancho getting an extra 1.5m. But Utd also save a few millions by not starting to pay his contract early and make money on the interest you would get on £80m in the bank.

I guess it's a case of us simply not beeing able to afford him on top of VdB and trying to publically spin the narrative.

You don't need to explain those parts to me, Chief, but hopefully some others will benefit from the information.

Think people perceive 1.5m (or whatever it is) as pocket change relative to a footballer's wage or the numbers bandied about for the transfer, seemingly not taking on board 1.5m (or whatever) is more than life changing money for someone or other he might be holding it out for (parents, allegedly?).

Why would any player forgo their rightfully due bonus, especially when, from the POV of this 'saga', there's plenty of time left to wrap up a deal.

I’d rather have Grealish.

That's the spirit.

Reminds me of when people 'wanted to move on' when Sporting were holding out for 40 million for Bruno. Because obviously he is a good signing at 37 but not 40.

Yeah I got you mate. Was just adding to your point. :)

Even footballers on ridiculous money....1.5m is not small change. Even billionaires don’t just turn down 1.5m in your pocket. It’s crazy to think Sancho would be happy to write that off. Especially as all it takes is to wait a couple of weeks for the transfer.

1.5m is life changing money for one of his family members or friends.

The more relevant question would be how many times have you watched him? Be honest.
I for one, actually share his concerns. He was brilliant mid season for Dortmund, but came back from lockdown slightly overweight and totally out of form, and he does not look to have picked much up on it lately either. Right now, I´m not even sure who I would like to see starting for United - Sancho or Greenwood. Dortmund sporting director has also been out in the media criticising Sancho´s attitude and his lack of understanding how it is to live like a top athlete.

So I thing it is a timely question if we should spend the whole transfer budget on him, or let him prove himself worth the money for another season in Germany. For pretty much the same kind of money, we could e.g. get Upamecano+Reguilon+Sørloth. We haven´t been linked much with the latter, but just wait for it...

If the deal is to be concluded nothing was ever going to happen whilst the internationals were ongoing.

So true

What’s more ironic is let’s take Grealish instead of Sancho cause Grealish came on and put a world class performance in.....not!

People need to think. Even just a little.

If anyone had a contract with their employer where they'd be paid a sum equivalent to 8-10 weeks of their wages for meeting certain criteria, they'd be mad not to wait for those clauses to kick in and get the payment...even if you had an offer that was doubling your wage waiting for you to sign.

Yep, it's no coincidence that right after bonuses are paid and in the bank, in any business, it's a popular time to hand in your resignation.

What? First Dembele and now Sancho? Someone should warn Haaland that Dortmund is just one big Hamburger joint before he gets Supersized too!

Fjørtoft reads the gossip and writes something that can be twisted no matter the outcome. Classic bullshit from a pathetic man in his 50’s trying to stay relevant in a football world he was never really a part of. Stay off the internet old man, let the real journos do their job.

Yep. Look at the deal for Donny for example. We only forced that through before because other teams came in for him, otherwise I reckon we would've waited until this coming week to sign him as well. I'm expecting things to kick off a bit now, and not just on Sancho either.

He's not a 100 million pound player and I've never been that impressed but if he does join then I hope I'm proven wrong just like I was with Bruno.

I definitely have concerns over his profressionalism, let alone for a 120m signing. At 120m you want a Ronaldo mentality, not a Neymar one.
