Jadon Sancho| Staying at Dortmund for now

You think Woodward knows something about Dortmund's finance -- like what we did with Sporting/Bruno?
I think everyone's been pretty open about how COVID has affected clubs and their finances and I'd be very surprised if the people at his level didn't know quite a lot through agents who deal with the clubs regularly. Dortmund's revenue is based largely on gate receipts so their income has been slashed but they'll have a decent reserve from selling Dembele. I do however think the only reason they were happy to fork out for Bellingham was because they knew United were coming in for Sancho. I doubt they'll do any more business until they've sold him.

I think with Bruno the total value was the same but we ended up paying less up front and more in potential add ons than what Sporting initially wanted.

exactly and some of those add-ons may not be reached. If we go from a definite final payment of 20m to 20m depending on Balon D'Or and a CL win through negotiation then it's a better deal.

If we still want add-ons and BVB want the same end figure guaranteed, the best way to tempt them would be to increase the value of the add-ons, so the total is higher and more desirable. If this was something like balon d'or, the gamble for Dortmund would be higher, but it wouldn't cause them to lose face.

That "City £15million windfall" line is funny.
It could just as easily be seen as "City miss out on £97million"

The same journalists talking about Woodward will discreetly mention Pini Zahavi or Mendes when the deal is done. United have been using intermediaries for several seasons now with Zahavi seemingly the favored option.

IIRC there was reports that Antero Henrique worked on Bruno deal, we do this a lot. We use middleman to get the deal done.

Since when weren't we willing to pay whatever needed for Haaland and Bellingham, the issue was that both had different ideas about where they wanted to go.

Plenty of sources say we weren't happy with Bellinghams salary and Solksjaer himself said we didnt like all the clauses Raiola wanted in Halaands contract.

We did this as far back as Mata deal. I remember clearly that we used an intermediary for some time after the details of the transfer were revealed.

If this deal doesn't go through due to transfer fee/ wage issues, who do you think will be a makeshift replacement at lower costs?

Cheisa is being reported but what we are missing is a player that has a killer final ball as primary attribute alongside pace/ trickery (Very specific kind). Here's a list of wingers in Europe's top 5 leagues with most assists.

21 Lionel Messi (Barcelona, ESP)
16 Jadon Sancho (Dortmund, GER)
15 Luis Alberto (Lazio, ITA)
14 Ángel Di María (Paris Saint-Germain, FRA)
14 Alejandro Gómez (Atalanta, ITA)
13 Thorgan Hazard (Dortmund, GER)
11 Filip Kostić (Eintracht Frankfurt, GER)
11 Mikel Oyarzabal (Real Sociedad, ESP)
10 Serge Gnabry (Bayern München, GER)
10 Achraf Hakimi (Dortmund, GER)
10 Son Heung-Min (Tottenham Hotspur, ENG)
10 Alassane Pléa (Mönchengladbach, GER)
10 Mohamed Salah (Liverpool, ENG)

German players do tend to get a lot of assists from the wings in general, due to the nature of play in the country, no offence to Sancho who is a decent player obviously and has great potential.

There are some brilliant players in the list, some might be affordable. Basically we should not lose hope even though we are not able to sign Sancho. We still have a decent team and it might free up funds for other important departments like our CB position and Bruno backup.

It’s hard to know what really goes on. We get nuggets of information. I know we should have signed Maguire a year earlier but then it was with Mourinho who is just as erratic in the transfer market and whilst we didn’t sign Maguire, we also correctly didn’t sign Perisic and sell Martial.

I think he’s doing a decent job but I just think that he’s very transparent right to the point where he hired a pr manager in Neil Ashton and it was all over the bloody news by Neil Ashton himself.

Yeah, it's hard to guess who plays what role and how much important their role is.

We did this as far back as Mata deal. I remember clearly that we used an intermediary for some time after the details of the transfer were revealed.

Yeah, we used for Mata deal too.

Not sure why we do that btw.

We were clearly in for those two and they ended up elsewhere — we missed out. And that’s fine, it happens all the time. I don’t think we needed to plant stories that Bellingham wanted too much money, or that Riola wanted to much money like we did. We all know that’s not true.

We paid Mino a huge chunk in Pogba deal and we’ve offered 30k to Gomes whom, albeit a talent, only started a few games for us and hence I don’t see a problem with the 55k a week Bellingham would have wanted. Considering we were willing to drop 30 million quid on him in the first place.

Problem is, people will blame Ed Woodward for every transfer that doesn’t go through.

Bellingham wanted to go to Dortmund because in the end he thought it was best for his career, considering the first team and the pressure to perform, it's hardly a surprise, it was always about how we'd be able to sell the idea of gradually being involved.

Haaland is a more difficult one due to Raiola and the insistance on a release clause, it's a no go in itself to risk losing a player for what is potentially miles below the real value.

What I don't understand in all of this is the protocol for the negotiations, does it go something like this:
United: "Hi, we want Sancho"
Dortmund: "Ok, it will cost you 120 million"
United (one day later): "We will give you 70 (I made that figure up for the sake of this discussion)"
Dortmund: "We said 120"
United (one day later): "We will give you 72"
Dortmund: "120"
United (two days later): "75, plus we will not be bullied"

Why does it take so long? What manner of technology do they use to communicate with each other? Clearly Dortmund are prepared to sell and we want to buy. How can it take so long to come to an agreement? If they are miles apart from the first discussion then it should become quickly obvious when to walk away. On the other hand, if they are not that far apart from the beginning then it should not take that long to come to an agreement.
This "transaction conversation" that keeps getting bounced around is quite tiring.

When you're spending massive amounts of money, it isn't as simple as calling up someone on Facebook Marketplace and offering them less than they're selling it for. You wouldn't knock on the door of someone who was selling their house and say "I see it's for sale at £100k, I'll give you £75k upfront. Great, pack your stuff and get out now".

These things have to go through brokers, banks, and many other people's hands before they're complete. How much work do you think it takes a bank to transfer £70m from their accounts to quite possibly a rival bank's infrastructure? You think they send men over with briefcases to make a bunch of deposits? All these people want paying for their involvement also.

There are many, many details to sort and that's alongside getting the selling party to agree on the structure of payments.

So no, Ed does not pick up the phone and make a call, that would be silly.

Does Sancho have just one year left on his current deal? If Dortmund wants to play hardball, feck it and just let him run down his contract and we get him on a free next season. That's what Bayern did with Lewandowski and Hummels too. Annoyed of paying crazy price and getting rinsed.

He's got 2 years left

I think we’re on the same page. I agree with what you’re saying mate. Though I can’t remember details of the Haaland deal in it’s entirety. We’ve made an absolutely correct decision in backing out of Haaland deal if Riola insisted on a release clause.

One year next summer

Sancho Analysis

I know a lot of Utd fans have only seen compilations or youtube videos of Sancho and naturally he will look amazing in a highlight reel. I mean, that's what a highlights video is right....the best moments? Even Bebe looked insanely good on youtube.

But on a serious note, I've watched Sancho quite a bit in the Bundesliga. More than the average Utd fan in the premier league. (I like watching a lot of football). And believe me, this is no exaggeration when I say this.....this kid is absolutely sensational and an incredible talent. I've been trying to tame my excitement, but if we are able to get this over the line, he will be an absolute game changer for us! I've dreaded the thought of him going to any of our rivals for many months now.

Over the last 2 years, I've been dreaming of Utd signing him but I've honestly felt it was just that..."a dream" signing that wasn't feasible. I just felt in our current state in recent years, it just wouldn't ever happen due to our recent failings, poor recruitment and the lure of other clubs who are competiting for titles. But the whole covid situation has just opened up the route to Sancho perfectly and its like the opportunity has just fallen into our lap.....we could literally never have dreamt of a better scenario. This kid is one in a million.

I know theres a lot of fans who aren't sure what his best assets are or whether he's worth it, so I will give my analysis of him for those who aren't sure.

One of his most dangerous attributes is his close control dribbling and his ability to dribble with the ball at pace. He has this ability to draw defenders in and just explode away from them in a flash making them look foolish. It often looks like defenders aren't closing him down quick enough or they are giving him too much space....but the reason is if you try to press him or close him, his feet are so quick you end up looking rather stupid and also leave a gaping hole behind you.

His biggest asset which I feel is this....naturally teams try to double up on him to counter his dribbling threat. This is where Sancho is incredibly clever. He is able to play to the situation. If he is getting double marked, he is able to find quick give and go's with other players around him who are in more space due to the fact hes attracted defenders towards him. These give and go's he does are absolutely deadly. His "give" is so fast and crisp that the receiving player has plenty of time to receive and supply the "go" ball back to Sancho. Sancho is so explosive and fast off the mark that he can leave 2/3 men completely out of the game by drawing them towards him and then leaving them for dead with pace.

The special ability he has which is the reason why he is delivering insane numbers in goals and assists is his "decision making"....especially while travelling at speed. He is always able to find a killer ball when travelling at speed or doing a quick twist and turn. As his decision making is so quick, he is able to find opponents that crucial half second before a defender can do anything about. Quite often you will have players who are brilliant at dribbling and have rapid pace, but just aren't able to deliver the final ball consistently enough. But Sancho is a serial provider.

In summary, it would have to be an incredible cliff fall for Sancho not to suceeed in the premier league. He has every attribute you would desire from a Winger/Forward. This kid is a true generational talent who has an incredible future ahead of him. This boy has an X-factor that I've only ever seen in Ronaldo from our signings in the last 15 years. I genuinely believe Sancho will go on to have a better career than Rooney had. I truly hope it is at Man Utd. Believe me, you will not be disappointed! :)

Two years. So it would be more like the Sane scenario.

I can’t see wages being a problem and sure he is a very promising if not elite talent in football but should his wages currently be more than Rashfords and Martials probably not. It should be comparable to them That’s for sure.

Judging by the tweets from yesterday, they would be the same.

Thank you for this, getting tiresome how people keep making it sound so straight forward.

You are right, I think the toxic aftertaste from the Pogba issue also complicated matters for us then because Raiola was effectively at war with us those days.

It just a formality at this point. We will eventually come to some sort of an agreement as we came to an agreement to an overall sum and that’s the hardest part. It would be different if we were apart in valuation of the player — that’s trickier.

Yeah it’s hard enough to buy a house. Imagine trying to buy a bloody person for an x number of years through an intermediary with number of third parties with their own vested interests. It’s bizarre to think that we’d just rock up and thrash a transfer out over a text message or something.

Jan wouldn't be doing all these pathetically "cryptic" tweets if he wasn't sure it would happen.
He’s a bit of an attention seeker imo but he’s got contacts in Germany, Norway too obviously so I really believe him in what he’s saying.

Yes there is a lot to be done once a number has been agreed. But on the other hand Ed knows how much money he is able to spend and Dortmund know what they are able to accept. It is exactly the same process when buying a property. It is for sale at a certain price and you know how much you can afford to spend on it. The seller then just has to decide if they will accept what you are offering or not. Especially when there are no other bidders for the property (read football player).
Also, if you find it tiring, don't read it. Simple.

If these German sources and Fabrizio are wrong they destroy their credibility. For anyone doubting this transfer, do you truly believe they would risk being wrong if they didn't know?
