The Deal: factors for and against

FOR:
1. Solskjær wants Sancho (It’s more Of the given than the factor but still).
2. Sancho wants to leave BVB. Will not extend the contract.
3. United is the only serious buyer.
4. BVB needs cash.
5. United fully understand that Sancho is the hottest available asset on the market and is willing to pay a good price even in the global crisis.

AGAINST
1. BVB is irrational (risks to lose the player for nothing or peanuts).
2. United is irrational (lowballing, e.g. £50 million bid, take it or leave it).
3. Player is irrational (demanded wage will break the United payroll hierarchy).
4. Agent demands are too high.
5. BVB waiting for United to get desperate (actually it’s not a pure “against“ factor, It’s just United will “overpay” in that case).
6. United doesn’t get desperate. Back to #1 in this list.

Factors “against“ are pure speculations are based on assumptions. I think, this deal ( as any big transfer these days) will drag for a week or so and gets done by 12-13 of Aug. chance of cancelling is 20%. Just an opinion.

I will put my trust in Romano and Falk. They have said wages are agreed and the structure being paid are in dicsussions. That's good enough for me. I'm not sure why United have to brief the English journos like this though

This is all about creating some media buzz before the unveiling on Friday. New number 7 on the 7th. It's perfect. I'm sure the media guys are working hard on producing some good content as we speak.

That's the first time I've seen a reasonable explanation for why we do this whole briefing nonsense. Cuz otherwise makes no sense.

All the British press this morning running with they think it will still happen and this is just Woody's game, even they don't believe the brief they were fed last night.

150m loss in revenue is something I can't wrap my head around that figure is completely made up and bogus , yes we have lost gate reciept for few home games but what else till now ,may be we lose that kind of money going forward in the worst case scenario if supporters aren't allowed back for complete next season.

There could be many things - loss of Commercials being one. Reduced broadcast income being another

But yeah I agree that £150 million sounds a bit much - but between £50-100 million is probably not unlikely for a club like United.

So the only real Winners are the clubs heavily backed by rich owners

Could be as simple as that, who will the entire football world be talking about? United!

I only follow Simon Stone('Sky high wages') and Ornstein('wages could damage squad harmony'). Dont know about the rest.

It's all could this and that.

Some very reliable journo have said it's agreed, has been for a while and even released the details. I wouldn't worry.

I don’t think it’ll happen soon. Romano is getting his information from agents while Stone (and possibly others, Ogden?) is getting it from Man Utd and they said yesterday that they’re prepared to walk away, fee needs to be lowered etc.
None of the mentioned have said anything about the 10th of august deadline. My guess is that this will drag on until probably late august or maybe even longer. I’m sure Woodward/Judge will try to get the transfer fee as low as possible and it seems they think their best chances of doing that is to keep the negotiations dragging out.

It’s incredibly frustrating for us fans especially given the history of dragging negotiations with Fellaini (ended up costing us around £5m more because of it IIRC), Bruno (unsuccessful in lowering fee, could’ve got him half a year earlier for the same fee it seems) and Maguire (unsuccessful in lowering the fee, cost us a pre-season for Maguire with us).
Edit: Stone mentioned 10th aug deadline, but somehow seems it isn’t as important.

Not sure even Woodward believes this tactic of media brief "we will walk away" works anymore. At the end of the day I doubt it brings any leverage when negotiating with Dortmund, they don't have to sell at the end of the day.

Wages potentially being a deal breaker is something we shouldn't be briefing about I feel. Doesnt send the right message about the player involved. Did this happen for any of our recent successful signings?

It was only one journo who wrote fee/wages wasn't it?

Maybe it's just me but it seemed like a bit of a lazy tweet like he wasn't really listening to the brief.

Most have said personal terms are done and it's the fee and structure that's the hold-up.

Where's the white text?

He isn't wrong. The only things that would stop Grealish from performing at a top club are all intangibles stuff like mentality and how we'll cope not being 1st choice, etc...

Feels like a mini brief this morning that is essentially saying "this is probs just a brief and we'll end up paying it RE Maguire and Bruno"

I am sure that will either sign or not sign sancho

All in the game of increasing social media engagement etc.
Yep, or as I said in a previous post maybe all of the leaks on the German side of things about a deal being very close are actually just ways to pressure Woodward to cough up and the deal isn't actually that close? They must know his reputation is awful with united fans and if we now didn't sign him imagine the outrage from our fans he would get.

So Woodward leaks that the deal is miles away with the goal of trying to manage expectations to the united fans.

I dunno, just a theory.

Fair enough.

I just find it odd we are questioning the wages of a potential signing, we don't usually do this as it undermines the intent of the player.

I don't buy the wages thing really. By all accounts he will be getting around 250 if he meets his incentives. Same contract as Rashford for a player who is easily as good maybe better and a similar age. We can hardly be surprised he wants the same amount?

It makes sense if United want to spend time negotiating and don’t want their fans expecting this to be sorted within a few days.

You mean, why try to lower the price? Crazy, right?

Nothing wrong with lowering the price. Doing it in a transparent manner just looks silly. Just like we always blame the agent (Haaland) or the actual player (Bellingham) for wanting too much money when it doesn’t work out. Or Bruno for having low pass completion. It’s never our fault. No, can’t have negative PR.

We don’t need to brief the English press that we are thorough in our negotiations. It’s almost like Woodward wants to get rid the bad reputation he’s got. Which I get, but at least get Ashton to get his mates to write puff pieces after the fact, not have all released in embargo styled quotes.

The likeliness of Dortmund caving in because of all this bluster out of us last night is slim to none anyway. Watzke and Zorc are notoriously difficult to deal with. Woodward has this out for publics perception of him rather than being a tough negotiator in reality.

i watched this game thinking what a fecking player he is. So smooth on the ball like Martial. You can just tell they will both have the best chemistry. Know way we dont have top 3 best attack in the world if we sign him.
I also really hope we can come to an agreement for him this summer. United should try their best to reduce his price tag from 108 to 90 pounds which is fair.

Feck Dortmund by the way. They should know things aren't easy after the pandemic.

The Martial comparison is a good one.

They burnt 95% of the Internet ITK's with this brief who all jump on the band wagon too early that the deal was agreed. Shame on them.

Seems to me people just get bent out of shape because it's us. There's no harm in trying. Covid offers up a very different landscape. They'd be fools not to try to lower it.

Except we did get a better price, right? And who does have negative PR. Which clubs don't try to defend their position?

It's a bit silly to see so many journalists openly talking about it being a briefing by us and a usual tactic. Just makes it all look so transparent and pointless.

Still dealio done.

I don't get the whole argument about Covid being a reason for lowering fees. Obviously the buying clubs have good reasons to not being able to pay as much, but the same goes for selling clubs who have good reasons for not being able to receive less. The only logical solution to me would be that the richer clubs have to adapt in order to make transfers go through - I.E United being richer than Dortmund - United are more capable of paying up full price than Dortmund are to receive less for their arguably most valuable asset.

You would think that after seven years of doing this, Woodward would have found a way to be slightly more subtle about it.

I guess until the signatures are on the paper, it gives them leeway to pull out and or try to scare BVB. However getting every English journo to publish the same story at the same time....and never follow through with the threat is just sad. BVB probably had a good laugh at the stories.

Also, imagine trying to make your point by walking away from a Sancho deal. The best time Woodward had to use his threat was Maguire. You don't pull this nonsense on a Sancho type deal.

Well obviously, you can't just immediately hand over the asking fee. You'll be taken for a mug every single time if you do that.

This look done and dusted.. Same as Pogger's and Maguire's deals where technicalities and paper work./ installments - adds on kept dragging on.

I hope he'll be announced soon enough so we can salivate finally on a true RW that has been elusive since the days of Beckham!!

Sorry to both Antonie Valencia (was amazing when he came right back from that freckish injury but only for half a season then reverted back to his old self) and Nani who came the closest (in 10/11 he finally got a wonderful streak of consistency performances before that horror tackle by donkey Carragher. on/off conundrum sequnce followed it before we got rid of him.)

any ideas\leaks on how he'll be reveled. I bet you that woody has some tremendous tricks up his sleeves.

Yeah it's pretty stupid tbh.

If you really want him just pay the fecking price, tbh I had enough of this.

The whole point of this walking way strategy is to make the seller believe that you'd really walk away and have another target. Does anyone here believe we'd walk away? Me no, we'll end up paying exactly what they've been asking. Just a month or so later.

I feel like they've done this just to give us a bit of breathing room so it's not such a rush.

The press were all talking about it being imminent when that's clearly not the case, but I don't think it's all gone terribly wrong either.

This "cooling off" stance just gives us more time to work it out, and it keeps it alive in the news too.

I will be absolutely amazed if it falls through - Romano is still positive.
