Jadon Sancho| Staying at Dortmund for now

Nothing would please me more than to see Sancho come to United this summer regardless of the cost involved. I just don’t see him actually coming to us. I think Ed coming out the other day and saying what he was saying was an indication that these uncertain times have indeed scared the Glazers. I think we will get 2 players this summer and I feel no one will see them coming.

I genuinely think moving forward we will now be signing the right players for Manchester United but I don’t think we will get Sancho for £100m. The only way that happens is if we lose Pogba.

Let’s be realistic here guys. Ed has come out and said it and I don’t think he’s come out and said that because he wants other clubs to think we won’t be bullied into paying large transfer fees when he’s come out previously and said we have loads of money to spend.

I fear we could miss out on him too but not going to throw the towel in on this one yet

I agree. He could still come and I could be talking a load of tosh. I just feel the glazers will be tightening the purse strings right now.

If we do manage a decent sum for pogba and go for Grealish, then the money saved from that, plus whatever we manage to scrape out from deadwood sale should be enough to get Sancho.

I don't think money will be such a huge issue, despite the hit that football has taken this summer.

I don't think United have any money at all left this season after buying Fernandes. I expect the plan was sell to buy. But the virus smashed that; I don't see who has money to buy our available players. Could we issue £90m in 5 years bonds paying 4% interest or something like that? Does it keep us within FFP rules?

FFP will apparently be relaxed over the next year to combat the losses from coronavirus

I don’t see how Sancho comes this summer. We could do it if we sold Pogba but nobody is willing to pay what we want and is only seemingly interested in swap deals. I would be happy with just Grealish and Bellingham at this point. We need to keep Pogba though for now.

Do you know how negotiations work? People always base these things on what they think. It don't matter what Eds said but it would also be natural for us to distance ourselves at this time because of the uncertainty but also because of the constant rumors. We don't even know when our next game is. So nothing these people say should be of any interest. United might want the player but they also don't want to pay 100 m you are right.

If United can push the price down, they will and they know that even if Sancho was the only player we sign, we'd be happy. They'd say - oh Pogba and Rashford coming back are like new signings etc. All spin. We just have to hope that it's not another Robben situation or another Ronaldinho situation....

Why wouldn't the club have money to spend before the virus happened?

So you don’t see how Sancho comes for say £90m without selling Pogba, but you would be content with just Grealish and Bellingham, for I presume £90m?

Where does this idea that we cannot buy any players unless we sell Pogba come from in the first place?

Well if we can get Sancho then I am certain he will be the only player we sign. Sancho will not go for that amount. Dortmund will want at least £120 million for him.

We have plenty of money left. I don't see how that's disputable. FFP wouldn't be an issue, nor would we be looking to pay the transfer fee up front.

They are not getting £120m for him. That makes him the 5th most expensive player ever. They know that's totally unrealistic in this climate.

Not to mention FFP will be relaxed in the wake of this pandemic, so even more leeway for us to spend this window.

I've posted many times that I think we should really go all out this window if possible, Spend the absolute maximum we can if the players we want are attainable.

The conditions are perfect for a buying club that has weathered this COVID storm.

Plus it could elevate us that little level we need to catch up

No its more to do with the virus and loss of money we will endure over this pandemic. Also a 100m signing after all thats happened just doesn't seem right.
I’ve seen a few people saying this and I just don’t get it. Are we as a business supposed to remain in mourning after lockdown ends?

If we have the money it’s up to us how we spend it. As a PLC we have an obligation to do what’s best for the business. When the Stock Exchange opens are they going to be saying keep it light there’s been a virus?

I could accept it if we’d furloughed staff or bumped creditors, but I don’t think an individual football club that has created a strong business position has any obligation to sabotage its own success.

If we are in a position to ‘exploit’ the market I’ll be delighted. It’s only on account of our successful business performance.

If I were BVB or any other club management, I will try my best not to sell my valuable asset in the next transfer window just because you can't get a good price for them. Same for the players and agents, they can't get a good wages, signing fee, and commission in the next window either.

You’re ignoring the fact that many clubs might need to sell in order to cover operational costs.
Sancho also has two years left on his contract, you’d imagine there will be little difference in transfer fee selling this summer and selling next when he only has one year left.

Also ignoring the fact that the asset in itself will depreciate with every passing year.

I don’t necessarily think transfer fees are going to bounce back up to pre Covid levels next year anyway.

There was always going to be a post-Neymar drop which would either have been this summer or next.

Coutinho, Dembele, Joao Felix (although that’s a scam as he’s only gone for €35m) were all bonkers figures. Clubs just don’t want a market like the way it was.

Neymar Coutinho Felix Griezmann Dembele. Barcelona single handedly fecked up the market. The are the common factor in all these deals

A good price? You can't assess a players value based on the climate from 6 months ago, it has to be what a player is worth now. You also have to factor in that we are still in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, one that has weighed heavily on many clubs, including Dortmund. Even if the market somehow miraculously bounces back, it won't be for at least a couple of years. Sancho can sign for someone else for nothing in a year and a half. If you're a selling club, which Dortmund are, then you get as much money as you can for a player. It's highly unlikely anyone will match what we offer.

He has one year left after that. Think of the price drop with that added in plus a season with lost matchday income with the probability of another (at least).
Imagine the second wave comes in winter and the season is lost. Thats tv deals etc out of pocket as well.
Now could be the best time to sell

Timing of deals, especially big money ones is of greater importance too, at least until there is a clear timeline for football. You don’t want to spend £100m on a player and put him on a 5 year deal if hypothetically, he doesn’t get to kick a ball for a year. As soon as he is contracted and you start paying him, you’re going to want him on the grass as soon as possible.

Woodward saying we will be highly competitive in the market this summer, and we’ll keep backing Ole .

This gives a muppet hope

I think Sancho will be done, it's reminding me a bit like Maguire talk last year. It's just a matter of who we can get that can really bolster the side - Ighalo perm and a strong holding midfielder would be fine by me. Assuming Pogba stays that's creativity covered between him/Bruno from midfield.

If its 100 mill euros or 87 million pounds then whats the problem even in this market. Lets say we wait it out and the market really goes to sht. Then next year what do you think he will be worth - 70? So 17 mill saved. Is 17 really worth saving considering the loss of having him an extra year. We would make that on merchandise and the impact on the team and results etc. Heck 27 mill extra, more to get him now is still worth it.

Its not really about his marker value. He is clearly worth that amount. The problem is how much the club can commit to given the uncertainty.
As Ed said, we will be competitive, once things are clear.

I imagine we will be looking at selling Smalling for about 20m and 2 or 3 others for 20-30m combined this summer. That way it's not a huge outlay on Sancho.

No way are we spending 100m+ NET this summer. I don't think any club will be. Us signing Sancho I think will still depend on who we shift out first. We haven't got a never ending tap of cash.

Be great if Alexis decided to take a paycut and just put the United move behind him. We could give him away for peanuts. It would be worth it to save the wages alone. Will he take a cut though?

How much money do you project on Merchandise? The rule of Thumb is that a club will get about £12/13 per shirt.
So if the club sell half a million Sancho shirts they will make about £6million - before tax and other deductions. Is it plausible to sell 500,000 Sancho shirts. NO.
The justification of an exorbitant fee on the strength of merchandise is a non starter.

This is why I'm hoping we're able to do some smart deals. Signing Partey for his buyout clause would be a good example.

I think we'll get Sancho for around 80m, Grealish for around 50m if Villa go down, and Partey for 43m.

Sell Pogba for 90m, Smalling for 15m, Rojo for 5m, maybe a couple more deadwood players and we'd be looking at a net spend of 60m, which is in line with the last couple of summers.

I get the excitement, but why so many fans is describing him like he'll be the savior of our team, the last missing piece that will won us the big trophies and all that. He's not that good, at least not yet, just a bag of huge potential. Over high expectations, setting up to be disappointed?

Anyway, get him!
Money is not the problem, (1)him wanting to join or not and (2)the higher-ups in our club willingness to splash it or not, are. Selling our players first or around the same time of the Sancho deal will improve the odds of (2).

I wonder if Ole is really interested in him.
Idk how Sancho is personality wise, but all four of his transfers; James, AWB, Maguire and Bruno takes two key things into considerations; football ability (but then many players have this so..) and highest priority is character.

United sold an average of 1.8m shirts each year over the last 5.

A big name signing will eat up a lot of that. Like when we signed Depay and he was among the top shirt sellers in the world that summer.

Yeah it’s never really about selling shirts is it. It’s about which name the person buying a shirt anyway puts on the back of theirs.

I always found the shirt sales thing weird.

No one really said he’s the last missing piece. It’s about signing the right player. Spend the money on the right player. And Sancho looks like in the category, thus why the club makes him as top priority.

  • He’s a young player with potential to be world class
  • Right winger or wide attackers is one of position that we need right now
  • Creative player who offers both goals & assists means he can improve the team since our biggest problem this season is struggling to break low block.
Signing him alone this transfer window doesn’t mean he’ll be the savior. It just means that we are improving our squad & fill in one from 3-5 more additional players that we need before we can start be considered as title contender.
