Jadon Sancho| Staying at Dortmund for now

Dortmund set an unreasonable price, we didn't pay it, nothing shambolic about it. Next year he will go to another club for under 100 mil.
Yes. It would have been the PL record ffs in a very difficult time financially. Not negotiating on their initial valuation is the same as refusing to sell in this market.

He will go elsewhere next summer. We had our chance and blew it. Despite what the posters on here who work for the glazers pr team might try to spin it this window has been a complete shambles.

As opposed to transfer experts who can predict the future? You lot speak as if you know in and outs of every transfer when the closest you've been to one was by subbing to IndyKalia on twitter.

So why throw a hissy fit if he felt undervalued by Utd?
Literally no other club thought he was worth that. Utter nonsense.
Go back to last summers thread, we were told more clubs would be in for hin this year. Not much of a stampede huh? Almost as if 120m deals are rare and only 1 or 2 can afford it

I really think COVID has put these deals into perspective for many clubs. Only Chelsea can really have a go but will they do the same given the spend this summer? They still need a CB, CDM next summer and I think they’ll need a keeper as I don’t think Mandy will be a hit.

It's one thing to not want to pay up but sitting on your hands for the entirety of the window without moving to address our needs until the final days of the window as everyone around us addresses there's is really sensible strategy to some of you lot?

I wish I still had that rose tinted view of the club, must be nice

If we match Dortmund's valuation next season, he'll come, I don't buy the idea he won't come because Dortmund were holding out for a crazy fee.

I agree, but I think that will be dependent on no other clubs seriously going in for him and us making top 4.

I'd be amazed if others don't go in for him, and as of this moment, I think there are 5/6 teams who finish above us.

Right you've got it figured out captain optimistic,my apologies for not acknowledging our geniusly shrewd management. We're brilliantly ran and are really building something special at the club alright
No we aren't but everything thing needs to be viewed in the context ,not every action can be categorised as black and white.

Agreed it all doom and gloom in here, yes optics of this transfer look bad but nobody actually knows how things went down apart from Dortmund , United and Sancho and how it would impact our pursuit for Sancho in future I for one is still very confident if we go for Sancho next season we would be his preferred destination.

I really don't see it, I think we have pissed on our chips.
There really is no way that Sancho could now be looking at United in a positive light after this debacle.

I posted on this thread 6 weeks ago this wasn't happening. I knew they wouldn't pay what was needed to progress while everybody around us strengthened. I wasn't wrong.

That is what's annoying me. It seems Ole was so adamant he wanted him. He should have just been told that unfortunately the money is not available, but we would go and get him the next best alternative. Instead they did nothing except make it appear they were still after Sancho. Then they sign two kids on deadline day, which is great for the future, but the need is now.

Thinking Dortmund's price was unreasonable is fine. In which case you do what every other club did; decide you can't afford Sancho this summer and target players you can afford.

You don't sit around all summer waiting for Dortmund to lower their price when there's zero need for them to do so, then scramble for different signings at the last minute because the thing that was never going to happen hasn't happened.

Also FFP was relaxed for this year, it gave Chelsea a chance to go all out.
I have never seen a club so publicly shamed for not being able to afford a 100m plus deal before since that is all this is. I just dont understand it. I would understand if he went elsewhere which would have some embarassment attached but he didnt.

Drama queens.
I don’t believe even half of what has come out since yesterday.
If he feels undervalued by United, how undervalued must he then feel by all those big and rich clubs which weren’t even in for him this summer?
But all of a sudden they will all be offering big money next summer?
Our board is inept, even he and his agent must know this.

If we offer the money next year he will come, even if we finish 10th! He will be only 21 and won’t make a decision just because we won’t be in the CL the following season. He is in the CL with Dortmund after all, but his current club won’t be anywhere close to winning it anytime soon anyway, neither would we even if he had joined us.
If Chelsea are in for him and he wants London, then he will go there. But equally he could come to us, feel unhappy in Manchester after a couple of years and could still want to join a London club later on.

If, if, if ... we didn’t get him, nothing can be done about it and no one can foresee any club’s finances this time next year either. All clubs’ financial troubles will continue.

THIS./

So many overinformed posters on here throwing about fees & wages like facts when they’ve no actual information.

And what makes you so sure of this? Everyone’s going on about how other clubs finances would be better next season but what is this based on? COVID hasn’t gone away and it’s unlikely fans would be back before March 2021. That loss in revenue is going to hurt clubs a lot.

for all we know that uncertainty is a result of us not breaking our transfer record. If we aren’t hit that hard by all this in the coming season we could be in a much better position next summer where clubs are desperate to sell.

Of course, of course. You, like everyone else, knew exactly what was fed by the journalists. Nothing more nothing less. Saying "it won't happen" with the info available 6 weeks ago wasn't some genius prophecy.

Simon Stone of the BBC says something similar to The Athletic. That United's pursuit was never serious.

That's the third time now that they've bent us over in our pursuit for players. We're a joke shop of a club.

Made up bullocks by that sensationalist twat.

Let's wait for Neil Ashton to get the real story for us proper top reds

I believe we did right by not paying what they were asking,we are in the middle of a pandemic, No one knows when things will get back to normal. Until then I believe the club need to be responsible and mange our finances the best way possible.A lot of people on here get wound up and seem to believe anything and everything that is published in the tabloids and on social media.
I like a few on here think we should have looked for a central defender, but Ole must have other plans, perhaps we will see one of the younger players stepping up, time will tell, in the mean time we are Manchester United so let”s all get behind the team and see what happens.

I'm reminded of Woodward's first summer here and our strategy of putting joint bids in for Fellaini & Baines in the belief that Everton would then have to accept selling both, only for them to then reject the rather low bids and leave us overpaying for Fellaini later.

We seem to have an amazing ability to look stupid while trying to be clever.

The only reason I don't think he'll be here next summer is because I don't think we'll make Champions League... I don't really think "hurt feelings" has anything to do with it.

A lot of this seems to be made up bullshit, but i'd believe the money and intention bit. I think we had neither the money nor the intention to buy Sancho at anything close to Dortmund's quoted price.
I totally agree mate.

The Atheltic can feck off with their opportunist bs. Us fans need to be wary of not falling too much for all the negative media narrative (mainly bs) that will now drag on for weeks which will particularly be the case if we continue our poor form during tough up-coming fixtures. Unfortunately that's how I expect it to pan out due to our poor/lack of pre-season. This will in turn put pressure on Ole (the Pochettino links have started already). I think if we have a poor season it's mainly down to the Board not supporting Ole and building on last season's third place finish.

Fair enough if 120 mil was too much - it probably was. What's so utterly shambolic though is the complete lack of any backup plan for if/when Dortmund were unwilling to lower their price. Rather than pissing around with lowball offers, why didn't the club move on to a plan B or C signing? If we were going to pinch pennies, was signing another attacking midfielder really the best use of limited funds given our glaringly obvious deficiencies elsewhere?

Very detailed story. Not pretty from a United perspective

I'm fine with the decision to not invest that much money in transfer fees and wages for Sancho, but I'm completely dismayed at how we managed coming to that conclusion and not being able to a single alternative ready for the first team. Just sheer and utter incompetence.

Dortmund are of course entitled to set any price or any (pre window closure) deadline that they want but i don't think Dortmund / Sancho should be bewildered that we tried to call their bluff. We have to accept revenue is down and the market is uncertain so this was not the background to set a Premier league record.

The issue, however, is that we should have set our own deadline and moved on to a viable option by the end of September. Right Wing was not a luxury position we were just trying to improve, we literally had no specialists in that area (up to the standard required) and the net impact of shifting strikers into that position is that AWB is being hung out to dry because his attacking and defending was suffering.

Having no suitable replacement lined up is inexcusable. We chased a dead horse for 3 months!!!!!

I really don't see it, I think we have pissed on our chips.

The player would need to have an enormous ego to be annoyed that a club wouldn't stump up €120m for him. If he should be annoyed at anyone it would be Dortmund for setting such a high asking price.

Whether we return for him is another matter, but I imagine the only way we've pissed on our chips is if we are not in a position to challenge for him next year, i.e not in the CL.

If the claims in the article are true, then your initial salary offer to him was lower than his current one at Dortmund. It takes quite some guts to come up with such an approach...

No disrespect intended but maybe you should consider posting less and thinking more.
It's a reasonable argument, whether it's right or wrong, is up for debate. You may be feeling raw from the fiasco with this transfer saga but that doesn't mean it's Ok to disrespect people's views and effectively tell them to shut up while starting you statement with "no disrespect intended".

Supply and Demand is an economic principle where demand by and large determines the value of an asset, and for varying reasons there was not that much demand for Sancho at the price the sellers slapped on. Could have been the uncertain financial position clubs find themselves in, could have been that they thought the price was too steep anyway, maybe they'd been bitten by recent mega buys and were wary of a repeat, could have been anything really.

Point is those clubs didn't seem interested at that price - of course it's likely they just couldn't afford him, and maybe it was exactly the same for us. Either way it's a noteworthy point whether you agree with it or not.

Knowing how our club operates and wages that we are paying that has to be an absolute bullshit. No way did we go lower then what he had in Dortmund.

Reports have been for weeks that personal terms were agreed.

Is it just me who gets the feeling that out of the two clubs, Dortmund seem more annoyed that the transfer didn't happen? They seem to be at pains to have briefed the media about their view of what happened. Meanwhile, we've been fairly quiet about it.

Contrast it to when Real Madrid were trying to buy Ronaldo from us. Madrid were going on and on about it through their press, whereas we kept our mouths fairly shut and seemed annoyed whenever asked about it. When we ended up keeping that first summer, we didn't crow about it to the media.

It was never going to happen for 120mil. I'm glad we didn't pay. That money is much better served in filling a number of positions as our main problem is depth and not the strength of the first 11.
Agreed but the club should have let it be known weeks ago that they won't go even near to what Dortmund are asking for and so it won't be happening. Many would have been understanding because of how things are in the world right now. It's almost like they revel in all the noise.

No it's not just you. I'm getting this impression as well and can't understand it. I also think they were loving all the attention that was coming there way due to Utd being involved.

I can’t help but feel if you have bought two wingers who have done absolutely nothing with fees that combine to a potential value of €50m, why not double that for a player that is already developed and world class? Take the hit in the next window if need be.
