Jadon Sancho| Staying at Dortmund for now

If Dortmund really set a 120m non negotiable price paid at once any by 10th Aug... then I cant even pretend to be mad at us not signing him.

What I am mad at is us not signing anyone for the right wing.

Firstly, he didn't get all of Ole's targets. VDB is the only one that fits the profile Ole seems to want to build his team. The others are kids and then there's Telles and Cavani. Telles whose older than Luke Shaw. Telles is better but not sure whose gonna be our first choice LB. Lastly, Cavani deal was absolutely stupid. We could have gotten Patson Daca who was young and would have pushed Martial. Now we are stuck with Cavani who I can only hope he remains fit. And yet another transfer window passes by and we've not signed an established RW or a proper CB who can be counted on.

I think he'll end up Liverpool when either of Salah or Mane get sold to the Spanish clubs.
But Salah and Mane are both on long term contracts are they not? Can't see which club could even afford them with this whole pandemic thing going on. Barca couldn't afford Depay for £25m ffs and Real didn't even spend a dime if I'm not wrong.

Salah (28 years), Mane (28 years) and Firmino (29 years). I assume Klopp will be looking to refresh his front line at some point. Could be as early as next summer. Real have not spent anything this summer as they look to spend big on Camavinga and possibly either of Mane or Salah for the RW.

I think the ship has sailed, personally. Going back in for him would be rough for the PR department. I wouldn't be surprised if Sancho himself was restless/had better options too. It looks like we have gone for some young potential punts instead - especially as I see other positions being of priority next summer. CB and DM, in particular

I think his price will reduce or stay the same next summer. Clubs won't have as much cash next year because fans won't be in the stadiums for some time yet. The general economy will not have recovered fully by then and we may still be waiting for a vaccine and therefore there remains uncertainty of when fans would be allowed back. Not to mention Sancho would also now only have 2 years on his contract as well.

Also, how do we just suddenly find ourselves short of cash funds? These are multi million dollar industries. It's not a guy going down to the bar and realizing he has less money than he thought he did. The club's finances aren't a secret to anyone (financial reports available to all), especially not to the people in charge of the club.

While we aren’t in as dire a position, barcelona just reported that their debt doubled in a year to 488m euros.

Can you imagine what another year of Covid will do to finances?

I don’t think any club is able to throw 108m at one player IN ONE PAYMENT.

It will be reduced for sure.

Either that or Dortmund won’t be able to sell him again.

The only clubs that can realistically stump up 100m are the oil clubs and chelski. I doubt Sancho will go to France and he definitely won’t go back to city.

That leaves chelski and I don’t think they are stupid enough to pay that much for one player either. Nor would they need him after this summers acquisitions. Doubt Sancho would want to join them anyways as he has his heart set on Manchester United.

I’d imagine the kids were targeted and we were always looking to bring them in sooner or later.

Without Sancho coming, it seems we accelerated their acquisitions.

Cavani is clearly a replacement to Ighalo and far superior.

Telles brought in as competition to Shaw because after losing him end of last season our form dropped off considerably. It also allows Williams to challenge AWB.

Dortmund won't sell him in Jan. It's in their benefit to wait until next summer and encourage a bidding war for him and not to mention, he'll be playing the Euros as well which would drive his price up more than 108m.

bidding war

Mbappe- Madrid
Salah/Mane- PSG to replace Mbappe
Sancho- Liverpool
Thats how things will pan out IMO

Sancho was born in London and grew up supporting Chelsea, being on Watfords books for years.
So i certainly wouldn't rule them out!

Most of us will be disappointed we haven’t signed Sancho. But if the club really can’t afford to fork out €120m on one player then what can be done?

Pretty much every journalist in England and Germany are saying the same thing. Dortmund wanted £108m for Sancho in January and for whatever reason they still wanted £108m in July despite a global pandemic drastically cutting clubs incomes.

It’s fair enough that they stuck to their price but it’s also fair enough if United didn’t think it was a good idea to break their transfer record when income has been greatly educed. Especially if it’s true the club had to take a large loan in April.

Very few big deals have happened, there’s more loan moves this window than ever before it seems. So United aren’t the only club tightening their belt. We can be disappointed while also looking at the situation realistically.

Hopefully we go back in for him in the next year.

He'll go to either Liverpool/Chelsea next summer, it will be a Hazard situation again, and there will be nothing we can do to stop it.

Woodward will give Cavani a big contract extension and call it a day.

Hopefully we can still go for him, especially if personal and agent terms can stay agreed.

I just have a disgusting feeling that Liverpool are going to be in for him come next year.

If we have any sense we would continue to work on this transfer behind the scenes and secure him for either January or next summer. If he's still a key target we shouldn't be wasting another window pursuing him, we should have him secured ahead of the window.

I can only assume we were short of cash and didn't want to spend 100mn plus on a single player which I wouldn't blame the club for. I do wish though that we had got in a decent CB in.

The Muppet in me thinks that we still haven't given up on Sancho. Pogba's sale will free up the money to get Sancho and VDB was signed essentially as a Pogba replacement.

No way we will get Sancho next year. Other clubs will come in too. And we will no longer be in CL. We seriously need a DM that will work like h... to cover for Pogba/VDB and Fernandes and maybe help improve our current CB.

You shouldn't post full articles here, if they are behind a paywall

It's a lot of words to essentially say that United didn't want to pay €120m and didn't take Dortmund's deadline seriously even though it was very much real.

What I found interesting is that it supposedly took until mid September before an agreement over Sancho's salary could be reached. So Ed not only wanted to lowball BD, but Sancho, too. Narcissistic ambition is one helluva drug:lol:

Mentioned it yesterday and its repeated again in this article. The club wanted a net spend of £50 million this summer.

With that being the case (despite whether I think thats acceptable or not) we should've been nowhere near this deal. We were never getting the required sales for us to purchase Sancho and sell £50-70millon worth of players.

It's not unexpected. Our boy Ed clearly seeks to redefine his severely tarnished image after a series of awful transfer deals and handing out big-money contracts to players who weren't worth anywhere near their salary. Now we're being reasonable and calculated and measured, you see. Sensible, too.

And while the man should have been fired approximately four years ago, and I'm mocking him right now, this is probably still a better approach than throwing 100k at Jesse Lingard. And in the end they did manage to come to an agreement with Sancho. It's his dealing with Dortmund that once again, shows hubris and makes me think that despite the somewhat more reasonable approach to negotiating personal terms, he hasn't learnt a bit.

Think you're right.

I am just very bitter that they played us fans, when they had no intention/wherewithal to complete this deal.

Woodward is like the Lingard of CEO's. Young and lernin, the hope is that he will eventually come good, as he's impossible to get rid of.

So who do we think he will join next year? I think Liverpool will get him for less than what was quoted this year.
