Jadon Sancho| Staying at Dortmund for now

The oddity is that most people would agree that £108 million in the 'current climate' is too much, no big deal, no other club is coming close to spending that much on a single transfer, so why should we, etc.

It's all this stringing along that is winding people up now, if we just got a defender and attacking player of some description, even on short deals, then fine, we would have a very good first team, and potentially a bit of decent backup.

But as it stands I genuinely do not understand what they are up to leaving us short as the season starts, and letting this drag so long.
No they wouldn't. They'd look at the player, consider his level and regard, and price him accordingly.

You want ballon d'or level (or potential players), be prepared to pay their worth.

We are playing a game of brinkmanship, perhaps, but we're simply moronic if we've gone in wide-eyed and bushy tailed, but I doubt that's the case, and the issue is the structure of the deal not the price itself.

Ironically, at the beginning of the window Sancho seemed a bit of a pipe dream given the uncertainty around covid and comparatively ridiculous asking price for an unproven player. Now its reached the point not only is he obviously worth that much if the deal falls through its entirely on us. Amazing.

£100m is certainly more than any club will be and perhaps should be paying this summer on a single transfer in light of the financial uncertainty however Sancho is an outlier because not only is he top class already at only 20, meaning he’ll give us 10+ years of service, he’s also extremely marketable. On the face of it, it doesn’t make financial sense in the short term but in the long term it does.

You dont need to wait till a transfer window closes to see how poorly run we are.
Even if we sign Sancho its poor and its less to do with signings anyway
You’re right of course. If the agenda is set, why wait for the end of the window. We sign Sancho and we’re still poor!? Fair enough bud, you’ve made my point for me...nuff said!

And yet we still haven't publicly ruled out signing Sancho in this window.

If United cant afford him ,or are naturally unwilling to spend 100 million on one individual in this climate, then just call it off.
If you read between the lines, he just did. By not stating it directly, fans think there is still a chance until the window shuts and then they can state they tried but Dortmund wouldn't sell shifting the blame. Problem is, we all know what's up.

It’s literally just a throw away comment in an article he wrote. I don’t think it’s him saying he thinks we will pay the 108 mill, more talking about our transfer window and how we ‘may yet pay the 108 mill [but who knows]’

Ah right, cheers.

Because rightly or wrongly, we feel that we can get the deal done, even if its late in the day.

He’s top class at a different club in a different league for a couple seasons. He’s hardly a finished product and a sure thing. Many young players with huge potential fail to deliver. Go back read what was said about many of our own academy players when they stepped into first team. Look where most of them are now. There’s considerable risk in Sancho.

The risk to us is irrelevant to Dortmund though. He's a gem there and for them and it's us intruding and enquiring.

Yes because its not just about signings. Unless you want to explain why Mata was given a new 2 year deal and hardly plays. Less said about Jones new deal Pereira etc etc the better. These things directly impact our ability to evolve the squad

I don’t agree. Dortmund is a high level, it’s not like he’s playing for a team that doesn’t get tested on the European stage or doesn’t have any expectation. If we were to play them tomorrow I doubt any of our fans would say it’s an easy game. He’s also a main stay in the England squad now and looks to be the starting right winger. That’s VERY different to over hyping an academy product like Angel Gomes, Ravel, Macheda etc. I agree with you that he’s not the finished article but to me that’s a positive because he’s already so bloody good!

He’s less of a risk than Bruno for instance and look how that turned out.

Fine, but it does seem very far fetched now if we are just waiting for Dortmund to drop the price, that is unless we were always going to pay the asking price, and have just stalled it to save a few weeks wages, or somehow the potential Smalling transfer is going to make the difference.

You could be right though, becasue if we get to the last week and then suddenly brief the press that we have ended our interest becasue the price is too high, then it's not going to go down very well, and they must know that.

I don’t think we buy Jadon Sancho this transfer window. The money isn’t there. Unfortunately. It sucks to admit.

We will probably try again in January or next summer but right now a miracle must first happen. Jones. Smalling. Rojo. Dalot. Pereira. Lingard. Mata. Romero. At least three or four of these must leave before we have space for more as far as I can understand.

I assume that our 2020 Annual report will be available in less then a week. I also expect our executives to be unavailable until then.

I think it's similar to this - i.e. we have the funds needed to pay the price, but we're trying our luck to push it down. If it doesn't work and Dortmund don't budge, we'll pay it but only after all other avenues have been exhausted. I have confidence that he'll come, but that it will be late in the day. For instance, it took 2 months to get the wages sorted on this deal and we've given ourselves a month to get the final fee sorted with Dortmund, and with those timescales in mind, I wouldn't be surprised if it took us that long to actually get the deal finally over the line.

Also, after taking everything in to account, it just doesn't make any sense for us to let the story drag on. Especially after we briefed that we got through the agents and wages issues last week. I mean, we haven't been shy in the past of nipping stories in the bud or outright briefing that we've shelved plans to sign a big name player in the past - both of which happened for Eriksen and Dybala; so why would we let Sancho be the exception?

We have the money. I don't care if this affects the Glazers' dividend payout. It's about time they contributed to the club since they didn't even use their own money to buy it. Buy Sancho!

To be fair

Why would they change their MO now? They've no interest in us beyond risk free dividends

Will fans being unable to attend games create more or less of a negative reaction if this doesn't come off?

So we still currently haven't shifted the following (unless I've missed something) -
Rojo
Romero
Smalling
Pereira
Jones
Mata
Lingard

Those players shouldn't even have a spot in our squad other than Mata imo.

Getting rid of those surely generates a sum that would massively help in securing Sancho. I'd say 40mil as a giveaway price?

I didn’t see any reference to Ducker’s own feed about this update. Seems like more false hope with Ed now reiterating that the market isn’t what it used to be. The excuses have started.

No you seem genuine more than enough for me to take you're word, only reason I stated that, was I seen many say the same about Ole, but tend to give Fergie a free pass on it and that pisses me off.
Thing is though, and I’m not making excuses for the parasites, but Fergie didn’t need massive money to rebuild every year.

The Don could win the league or challenge with whatever he had at his disposal. So he didn’t have to rely on the owners to back him big, he said they backed him when he did want players though.

But they certainly care

He's also stating the fecking obvious though isn't he. Covid-19 is having a massive impact but he also said we are more resilient so you can read it whichever way you want.
Personally I believe he'll be a United player come the end of the window.

I totally agree. Is he worth the money? And who does he replace... Greenwood? Don't get me wrong, loads of potential, but £100m worth? Do we need him? I am asking the question. He would have to be part of a rotational policy for the front three. In his last two matches he showed little. Although a different prospect for a rampant Dortmund team. On balance, this is dead in the weater and I would try and get Dembele on loan from Barca. As we lost the chance to get Bale.

We're paying for the sins Woodward has made in the past. They're all on big contracts and barely 2 or 3, who is going to pay a transfer fee and their wages? We've overpaid on mediocrity and this is where we find outselves.

Happy we finally have a game today so I can forget about this thread for 90 mins (I’ll check at half time of course )

I can’t explain it because I’m not part of the investment process or negotiations team. I wouldn’t have extended their deals myself but maybe there was a good reason we’re not aware of. Even if they misjudged it, so what. They made mistakes like every club, everyone!
There are people on here that have decided we’re crap though regardless of how we do in this window. “Fans” that would rather big up and defend Dortmund’s approach to this transfer window than accept that we might be negotiating hard for the best deal, for the best player to move (in my view) in this window, without any knowledge of what’s really happening...I just find it odd but maybe that’s just me.

And Lingard, and Jones etc etc etc. Its clear we are being miss managed.

Yes because its not about 1 window, we have seen this for many windows and we are shite at transfers and until the people in charge are changed (Woodward/Judge) then we will continue to be crap

Isn’t it strange that we have the longest ever transfer thread here without even making a bid?)
