Jadon Sancho| Staying at Dortmund for now

If we don't sign him this window then I think it's unlikely we ever will. We won't get a free run again. So, although the price might be excessive, the board need to decide whether there's anyone out there who could come close to what he offers, on and off the pitch, and at his age as well.

Maybe there is someone worth taking a punt on for a fraction of the cost, but all these short term solutions are pointless.

They seem to still hope they can pull it off, which is somewhat encouraging, I guess.

Would there be much point in alternatives should this fall apart?

It'd be less than 3 months to the January window once this one shuts. Just save the money, take the extra 3 months to see if there's going to be another huge outbreak, get some money from fans coming back to the stadium, go again.

Another year another window spent burning time on a deal that was never going to happen. Dortmund don't have to sell, he's a top class talent and is likely only going to get more valuable next season with more teams interested.

What is the strongest evidence we were ever in for Sancho?

If I recall I think Ole was asked about 'players we've been linked with' a few times and said something like 'We are obviously looking at a few players but I can't comment about anything'. Can anyone quote actual comments from people within Man Utd rather than vague stuff, which could have come from the agent, the cleaners, or just plain made up and retweeted by other journalists.

We've seen this before. Utd seem to like these protracted transfer sagas. It keeps their social media profile high having various rubbish trending and journalists are happy to play along - it's clickbait for online, and still sells papers.

At least Ole has managed to get in some decent players for the academy.

At this point, I rather we move on. We cant always looks like transfer mugs. I can see what Woodward and team have to drag it out. They want to show other clubs that they wont be taken for a ride or if they want to extract the highest price from United, there is a price to pay. We will drag out the negotiation for ever till its painful.
I find it ridiculous if we pay up the 120 million deadline day. Move on, get other quality players in or pay now the 120 million. Thats how it should be done in my opinion. Lets see.

Agreed, Pogba is due for renewal too, assuming if United don't sign quality he might be less likely to renew.

United really need to sign Sancho and get other targets.

So close to the season start now.

They aren't selling in January

If we had to spend big money on one player this season, a forward is not where we ought to spend it. Would you guys and gals agree? I take the point that he's a very talented player, but is he that much more talented/ different to the forwards we already have? Is he a missing jigsaw piece? I'm sincerely asking because I don't know, I haven't seen much of Sancho live, just youtube clips.

If you absolutely had to spend big money on one player, wouldn't it be on a central midfielder or centre back?

Again, I'm going by limited knowledge because all I've seen of us play in the last season is the last several games, and that's my impression of what's needed. I also went to Old Trafford to see that awful home loss to Burnley since when we turned things around. But from the last few games it didn't seem to me that we lacked creativity as much as looking a little dodgy in defence.

This is true.

The lack of ambition at United was Pogba's problem with us. This won't sit well with him.

I'd leave if I was him.

Getting Sancho means you have both Pogba and Sancho.

Not getting Sancho means in two years we have neither.

This signing really does outline our intentions as a club one way or the other.

I think the frustrating thing is why have we been chasing him for the best part of the summer if we can't afford him?

Surely we should have moved on and looked at alternatives by now. These 'saga's' we seem to have every summer are starting to get tiring.

I think we can afford him, if we couldn't afford him why are we being linked with other transfers? We've got the money, but it seems like its a cat and mouse game of Woody and the rest trying to see who can look the most clever.

No I disagree.

Sancho takes our forward line to world class. Among the best forward lines in the world. Creating and scoring.

No CB or CM offers an equivalent other than VVD in my opinion.

Sancho saves AWB too. Otherwise that side of the pitch is dead.

United are one of the biggest clickbait franchises in the sporting world. Most of the time very little was happening but they report it is because they want you to read the articles. prepare yourself for another one next year and the year after and the year after. Or alternatively dont buy into everything that is tweeted and reported.

I am sure they are looking at other targets. Woodward & team will drag it till the near end to see who blinks -- and if Dortmund don't, they will close on the 2nd or 3rd target.
It will show that they wont be taken as mugs even though the past is prologue -- and they have done so for years. The Fernandez and DVB buys are the sort of transfers they want to project. Plus now that they bought them esp DVB how do they justify paying 2 1/2 times DVB's Covid price now?

Agreed about the bitterness part but I can't understand the insistence on doing the transfer on or before 10th August. That's something I would deem unreasonable.

How many 100m plus deals have been conducted so swiftly? I would even say any deal costing 80m upwards takes time.

Add to that the way of dealing through agents, the pace of the deal was always going to be slow.

Why would you deem it unreasonable?

In Germany many contracts, or in this case promises, include a time limit for an transfer. Because german clubs know it's hard to buy replacements and do accurate preparation for the season in time. Also you usually have to pay much more money in last minute transfers (or if everyone knows you just sold a player for 120m).

In Dortmund's case i believe they promised Jadon they will listen to offers for a certain amount of money and at a certain timeline. Otherwise they will not sell (because they don't want to sell in the first place, but as i said they made a promise under certain circumstances).

And about the pace. Well it was known for at least 1 year that United is going to try to sign Sancho this summer. So there was probably enough time to prepare something. But it seems that United didn't even try until Dortmunds deadline was met.

In Covid situation, every club has suffered huge losses so deal of this magnitude will take time as United has to consider a lot of other impacts of this deal. So i guess August 10th deadline might not reasonable in current climate but you are correct that every club will have its own way of working. If it was any other window, we would have paid the transfer fee by now.

So you think a 100m plus deal can be wrapped up in 2 weeks? Great.

Justify to who? What?

This might be true. But in this case this is not Dortmunds problem. As i said, all Dortmund had to do was to give the opportunity as promised to Sancho, and now they are happy to keep him, because they don't want to sell in the first place. Even if some poster believe over here that Dortmund is 'happy to sell' because they are an 'selling club'. But they usually only sell, if they have to, not because they want to. And now they don't have to sell Sancho because his contract is long enough and his promises were respected, so i am still pretty sure, that he will stay this season, even if United offers 120+.

Sad to say, this is the United we are stuck with until these leeches feck off.

Galls me to defend these creeps but the way Dortmund have behaved, I do think there is some mitigation this time.

The way they distanced themselves from negotiating by using intermediaries, against their usual practice and seemed to relish in their childish media outpourings. United could still redeem themselves with 2 or 3 astute signings but cant say I’m overly optimistic.

Most sensible post I've read in the last 10 pages

That's not what he said though - it's literally right there in the post that it's been known for over a year that we want Sancho.

And big money transfers don't always happen near the end of a transfer window. United announced the Ronaldo sale on June 11 back then, a couple of weeks after the CL final. And Madrid had already wrapped Kaká up by then.

tbh if it falls through I would rather give Greenwood the Chance to Develop on the RW . Use the Money to get Thiago ,a Top notch CB and a LB . Ok the cover for RW isn't great but all the rest of the team would be far more solid .

We at the very least need someone for depth as we cannot play the same front 3 in all PL, CL, FA Cup and EFL Cup games or we`ll suffer the same fate as last season in the first half of it. Games are still coming in thick and fast an experienced stop gap on loan for a season ala Bale/Perisic(Bayern used this same strategy so dont look at it condescendingly)and either a LB/CB should still be gotten to give us enough quality to get us over the line we can`t just fold our hands and do nothing because of how things have turned out something has to be done

After recent developments, I am sure he is not coming this summer. It wouldn't be the worst thing if we didnt sign him this summer considering we get a LB, CB, CDM and a RW (cheap option).

Reasons:
1. We need a CB like Upemacano
2. We need cover for Shaw and Matic
3. It might give Greenwood more opportunity to develop.

We can build a squad for the Sancho price.

If Dortmund think they will take the risk next season, I would like to see them do this. Their business model is based on selling a big player every season. They showed a loss this season, which means next season will probably be the same.

They are not going to challenge for the title anyway. So we will get to see Sancho's development for another season.

Next season there will be no bidding war, with Mbappe saying he wants to leave, Haaland's clause coming into action, and teams looking to sell players for cheap, Sancho's price could actually reduce to under £100m.

In the end, I feel Dortmund will lose out because they are expecting Real, Barca, PSG, Liverpool all to be in for him, if that does not happen and we are the only club in for him again, then they are fecked.

A season in football is a long time, players will come through, no one knew about Ferran Torres last summer, there will be breakout players that may be cheaper.

Why the feck would we need someone with Thiago when our midfield is stacked already

Not really arsed about this. He isn’t guaranteed success as some would have us believe and I wonder how much he really wants to be here. Yeah.. yeah... the contract.. the bonus... greedy cnut. You want to play for United? You won’t go hungry pal.

Other areas to fix, other options other than sancho

We just signed vdb (a central midfielder). We have no attacking depth AND not enough quality in attack. Greenwood, martial, rashford are our only solid attackers. One of them just turned 18.
Ighalo, James are not good enough. Adding 1 more QUALITY attacker would help considering games will be played every 3-4 days for the first half of the season. We saw how that affected our players INSANELY last season since we had no depth. We fell apart at the end and barely scraped by.

we NEED attacking quality AND depth. we NEED a LW/LM for backup to rashford or even just a super solid STRIKER so martial can rotate sometimes on the left if needed Or rest. we've also NEEDED a RW for literally like 5 years.

Does this mean we just cant sign top talent any more? We didnt get Haaland, Dortmund did, we cant get Sancho, Koulibaly who was a target last year is looking likely to join City.

I get that there are extraneous circumstances around at the moment, and we had reasons not to sign Haaland, but still its becoming a bit of a trend.
