When Pepe was struggling after his £72m move to Arsenal he was justifiably trashed on cafe. That price range is for a finished product. As it is, Sancho is struggling badly for both club and country, being overshadowed by a much younger Bellingham.
Pepe was a few years older and already an established international. I dont think Jadon is worth 73m, maybe half of that, but he's just a kid and we are also paying for his potential.

The problem with Sancho (which is a good problem) he doesn't sit with the ball or try one flicks. He moves and looks to pass it someone for a quick one-two, the issue is no one on the team runs with them. We have such a static style of play. If it's not a counter-attack, we slowly move the ball up the field and then pass it around the field and hope, Bruno's one touch, no look pass, ends up with someone, or it's an overlap and a cross into the box. We lack the quick movement, one-two passes that have been practiced to break down defenses. Bruno's flicks, are fun, but is still a 50/50 chance of happening.

Think we all need to remember how off it Greenwood looked for a large chunk at the start/middle of last season. Wasn’t scoring, wasn’t really creating, defenders looked like they’d sussed him and he largely looked lost in many games. It took him a fair chunk of the season to start looking like a goal threat again and look at him now.

Sancho is young, has just moved to a new league and is going to need time. The question is whether he can be played into form or whether it’s best just to take him out of the firing line and bed him in much more slowly. (Ole is going to get shit either way as he’s either not playing his £70m signing or he is and his £70m signing is not performing).

Comparisons and fears he may be our next Kagawa or Mkhitaryan are wide of the mark for me. Sancho has spent most of his life playing English football, has no ancillary issues such as adapting to the British culture or weather, and has a wide circle of friends in the local area and at the club itself. It’s purely the football side of things he has to acclimatise to.

Either way, I’m fairly confident by the end of the season we’ll have a quality, well integrated option for the right side. He has plenty of ability and he’s not just going to forget how to play football upon signing for United. It would have been great if he’d just hit the ground running, sadly that doesn’t look like it’s going to be the case. So a lot of people just need to chill, stop over-critically micro analysing his every touch and move and show some patience whilst he settles in.

Good, rational post this. Need more of this across the forum

Half of that? Nonsense. The numbers he put in Germany totally justify the fee.

It's up to him to put the numbers again in the EPL, but let's not change the narrative about him being bought for anything else but being an instant starter.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to those numbers, they're misleading. The likes of Haller and Andre Silva also put up incredible numbers because the defending is on the dutch league level. It's nice that he performed there but it's just a stepping stone, and he's not worth that money right now.

For what it's worth Haller scored 4 in his PL debut. Sure the defending in Eredivisie/Bundesliga is not of the same quality.

But an awful lot of the time clubs buy these players and have no idea how to use them, in contrast to them being used perfectly at their previous clubs hence why these PL clubs buy them.

You’ll get chased out of dodge with reasonable, measured talk like that, pitchforks and burning torches coming your way my friend.

See... I keep seeing people say that and I know it's a figure of speech, but the only people who can chase one out of the forum are the mods. And never has anyone been chased out of here for being positive (however overly positive they were), whereas people have copped thread bans for being unreasonably negative or whiny.

So I don't really understand why people keep repeating it, even as a joke. You're far more likely to end up getting praised for seeing things in a positive light, than being admonished. And it's always been that way too.

How much more time? When a club pays £73m they justifiably expect the player to hit the ground running.

I don't think any clubs expects that, to be honest. Some fans might do, but I don't think the club is. You're paying that fee for his potential, not the finished article. I don't think United signed Sancho thinking he would immediately fire them to major trophies. It would be great for them if he did that of course, but the idea is you have this incredibly talented kid for the next decade. You develop him, and allow him the time to get better. Havertz is no different, in that regard. Ronaldo, Lukaku etc that's the kind of signing you expect to hit the ground running.

He has played the equivalent of 3 games.

All of which is say our team played with little to no cohesion. As a team we where a disjointed mess.

I'm not worried about Sancho one bit yet.

He is a silky player. It will show eventually

Mmm ok :nervous:

He's been shit so far and I'm okay with that.

I disagree with his fee somehow being indicative of a player that must hit the ground running. Finished products at 21y old don't exist.

We have no choice but to be patient. Impatience and bad management cost us some really good players (and hefty fees) these past couple of years.

You could draw parallels with havertz who was shit for a good proportion of last season but now he has adapted he looks like a top class player in the making

I really believe there are some fans who have been waiting for him to fail since last summer. Now their out of the woodwork despite him really not even playing up to 3 games. 1 of which was good, but of course was downplayed ( Newcastle). In additon, he had a knock during the international break. But for some reason, despite the CAF being so supportive of VDB after his first 10 games despite poor performances, Sancho isn't getting the same grace. Is it because he's english? Is it the fear that he might displace Greenwood or Rashford or Martial? I feel people are forgetting that him playing well only bodes well for us.

Would it surprise you?

To be honest the negativity is such that I’ll probably take a long break from here in general, it’s a brilliant forum but large sections can make it a miserable experience to a large extent, no matter what the topic.

New league and new system yes. But 21 is not a young player with that amount of CL games and internationals.

He needs time and games but when Rashford returns he could be seeing a lot of the bench.

Is it coincidence with when Chelsea changing their manager?

Then you haven't come into the crosshairs of the "Always Moaning" types here. Trust me if you did then you would want to take a break not needing a mod to ban you.

Some people lack perspective and forget that he did not have 100s of games in the PL before. Not everyone has the experience like a Varane who just play well from day 1.

Yeah, I have no worries about Sancho. He will be very good player for us. Also for the first time in years we have good depth. We have Rashford, Sancho, Greenwood as wingers and everyone of them is very good player.

Him failing here won't be a good look, people shouldn't want this.

People wanting Haaland and Bellingham will be in for a shock if they refuse to come here if Sancho continues to struggle. The only player who can excel anywhere is probably Haaland, you see it in the CL at his previous club but being seen as a poor setup for talented players will see them look elsewhere.

It's way too early yet.

Sancho might become a decent winger but I was expecting something phenomenal, Hazard or Sanchez for Arsenal sort of player.
I hope he proves me wrong but looks unlikely he'll be world class.
He's still young so fingers crossed.

I'm sure many would've branded Evra, Vidic, Rio, Stam, Ince et al a failier after a few games and all.

Yeah that's true Evra and Vidic especially didn't look anywhere close to world class but ended up becoming one of the best ever.

Looks unlikely he’ll be world class? These kind of rash judgements and then expressing them is so poor imo. He’s looked like he’s had world class potential since his debut in Germany and you now doubt it because of 4 games in a new country/league?

He’s played 4 games mate...

Wonder if Arsenal fans dismissed Henry because he took a couple of months to get decent.

You think Sancho is worth only £36m? You been living under a rock dude? Can barely get average players for that price. I'm guessing you've only watched Sancho in the few games he's played for utd so far.

Yeah its definitely too early but you can only comment on what you've seen till now, might as well close the thread if you can't discuss a player before he's played X amount of games.
If a player was ripping it up in Germany, France or any other league and suddenly starts dropping 5/10 performances after moving to PL its always concerning.

Good point. Haller had a previous experience with the current Ajax manager so he'd know how to use him best

He hasn't even been bad ffs  he could have had an assist against young boys if Ronaldo didn't hit it straight at the keeper - then people would be talking very differently here.

He was fine against Newcastle also, just needs to tighten up in a few areas but it'll come.

I feel like people on here are desperate for him to fail so they can say "told you so" and look smart. Fans are weird these days.

This isn't fifa career mode mate. No club expects immediate results except for unrealisitc fans.

Look at Havertz for Chelsea....very expensive signing and took most of the first season to start showing his class and ultimately helping them with the UCL.

Maguire - £80m and took a while to start showing consistency and become a rock solid defender in our team.

Pogba - £90m and only now we are seeing the best of him on a consistent basis.

What does a player's worth have anything to do with the actual price that you can get them for?

We've been dupe once again by Dortmund, he won't make it here, I'll be glad if he proves me wrong.

Yes he's a flair player with skills and technical abilities but in the EPL you have to be ready to run at full backs directly and purposefully, which he's not been prepared to do for the 3 games he's played

It would have been better if United took Vinicious Jr on loan when the chance was offered, as he is very direct and I think he suits United style of play better.

I can't believe the number of fans who think he was poor against Newcastle. He was part of a number of dangerous moves which he could have easily had a goal or an assist. He was very good against Newcastle.

So we are going to go off on a tangent now....so you genuinely believe sancho is only "worth" £36m?

To come to that conclusion just illustrates that you've barely watched any of his career so far.

Our issue is we needed a right winger who could hit the ground running. To have any realistic chance of improving on last season. As we did come second last year and the step to first is massive in reality. Ole certainly needed it going by the reactions already to a defeat this week. We’ve had VDB and James who didn’t work out slowing our progress so hopefully we keep playing Sancho until he settles in, which is more than we did for VDB.
