Yeah I think that is part of it. He definitely seems to prefer the players with more serious personalities / professionalism, hence the reluctance to back Grealish and Sancho.
I think the best managers know you have to balance the squad and maintain the professionalism but make allowances game winners to express themselves both on and off the pitch.

People with personality or charisma scare him for sure. That's why he has Steve Holland next to him. Kane and Rice are his sort of people.
There are many things to be curious about regarding Sancho and Southgate, although we'll never get the truth out of Southgate. Those who express themselves and play in a manner that generates high risk and also high reward seem to rub him up the wrong way as it's not only Sancho who he doesn't want to put into his bland team, but also Bellingham, Grealish and I have a feeling he'd drop Shaw, too, if he could.
The way Southgate sees football is the stuff of a bygone era, and again, it seems rather than accommodate and facilitate those who can provide an expansive, probing game, he'd prefer to not deal with them at all or work out how to best use them once they're on the pitch.
If you want players to run on rails with restrictive remits and a higher focus on two-way work than attacking the opposition, you definitely look elsewhere. I think it's a travesty England's FA allowed such an inept manager to run roughshod over the national team.
Ole might not have the tactical or coaching chops to ultimately win through at United, but what he does have is the optimism and romantic notion to let players go out and play (perhaps too much, as it then leads to us either playing sublime, off the cuff football, or equally, looking clueless out there) and in that regard he won't curtail Sancho's natural freedom of expression. As long as what he does is effective, Ole will be all for it, whilst you really do envision Southgate grimacing every time a player of his does something 'flashy' or intricate as opposed to getting his head down and screaming :chargggeee!'
We'll be a breath of fresh air for Sancho after the restrictive dour instructions and expectations of Southgate.

Yes, he alludes to it a lot - this character thing - and it does fall in line with what he always was as a player/captain even as a youngster. He's contradicted himself a number of times re. Sancho because telling it how he really sees it just isn't worth the headache. I do believe he sees these 'wildcards' as those you throw on when you've nothing left to lose, but that ultimately he doesn't trust them to follow instructions and stick studiously to his plan (of not much at all) for the meat & veg of a game.
His profile is dull, strict and not inclusive at all, which is really bad for squaddies because they know they'll not get a game but for injury or dire need. Even if they play well one game, his leaning will still be to put those he finds agreeable back in the team if he can. Talk about demoralising.
The sooner he is ousted the better. Progressive players and progressive football as a whole, will be the fall guys for as long as he is in charge.

All it needs is a photo of Sancho in a Utd jersey with the comment being merely "You love to see it".
Honestly if its anything other than that it'll be a woeful misstep. That's all we want.There is no impatience from me, i'm merely signalling it might be, in part a due to financial cycles.

To be fair to Rice, he's a very lively character, certainly not comparable to Kane at all.
I still struggle to get properly hyped about this. Great player, very good signing. But its still frustrating to be fixing last seasons transfer feck up a year later.

He’s also unique in being the only left footed natural winger of the group, in that Greenwood probably isn’t a natural ‘winger’ per se.
How is it a feck-up when you consider that it will cost us £30+million quid less? No one was going to pay pre-Covid transfer fees when we had no visibility heading into the middle of the covid pandemic?
It was fiscally prudent. It's a grown-up approach. You don't want to land up like a Barca whose management team acted like a kid in a candy store for years -- treating the club's money like it was free or someone else's.
Not to have a go but I'm honestly wondering what Amad has shown so far to suggest he'll end up better than any of these three. He's looked a class apart in the youngers, granted, and has had moments in the first team but to say that you reckon he'll wind up better than three of the most exciting young talents in the world (ok, Marcus is arguable for some) when he's played a handful of first team games is a bit of a reach. I have high hopes for him too but worry about saddling him with unrealistic expectations. We're even quicker to tear our youngsters down than we are to build them up.

Last year we did feck all to strengthen the team. Then fell short in the league and two cups. Maybe that statement would change if we had signed a single starter who wasn't a free agent.
As for ending up like Barca? Despite Covid the Glazers paid more than £23m in dividends in the financial year, so spare me the crocodile tears about financial prudence when it comes to spending an extra £30m on a key target. Saving that money put more money in the owners pocket, it didn't save the club from bankruptcy.
Exactly how it should be for an 18 year old at a club supposedly challenging for the big prizes. This isn’t a charity - when Amad is good enough to start he will - and that competition will improve him and the team. He’ll still get plenty of game time to develop. For too long we’ve had Martial and Rashford at very young ages guaranteed to start regardless of form.
