Jack Grealish / signs new 5 year contract

I trust Ole and our team to consider his personality above all else too. If they sign him then whilst I won’t like it I’ll accept their judgement.

He definitely drunk drove during lockdown. He ran away so as not to be breathalised.

I guess I don’t have faith that he’ll stop making these stupid mistakes. He’s 25 now so he’s had his time to learn from previous issues.

I always come back to thinking if I compare his behaviour to someone he’s competing with Marcus Rashford the difference is staggering. Rashford looks outwards how can I help Grealish’s inwards.

In my experience rarely do those self centred views change.
My understanding is that he has already mostly stopped the stupid shit over the last couple of years. Obviously he made one massive feck-up during the lockdown, but otherwise I believe he's been showing real signs of maturing and not playing up like he was when he was younger. That improvement is why he was given the captaincy at Villa.

It shows that he's got further to go, but he's already shown signs of being on the right path.

I just think the feck up isn’t a small thing. For example had he broken lockdown to play football like Foden did I’d be disappointed but I would get over it.

But to break it to have a drunken party and then drink drive the next day? Na that’s just fecked up and a real smack in the face to everyone.

I honestly wish he hadn’t broken lockdown and he’d been sensible but I really can see that being a reason we do not sign him.

Didn’t Sancho also not break lockdown rules and get a haircut when everything was still closed in Germany a week after the restart? I ll admit it wasn’t as serious as Grealish but he DID break the rules. So should we not sign him as well?

As I say there is a difference in severity.

I can forgive a hair cut when out of lockdown and measures are being relaxed to the point of football retiring but drink driving at the peak of lockdown? Nope.

Maybe I just have a different moral compass but they feel very different. Particularly with Rashford in the team.

Measures weren’t being relaxed at that point. It was just football trying to come back. That’s why he was made to apologize. It was still reckless.

But with Grealish if he is a repeat offender then yes his character is in question. But i think he should be given a second chance to prove himself. I mean we gave shit like Lingard a second chance after what he did last summer on social media.

I disagree. I dont think we need both of VDB and Grealish. One of them and get a proper CM like Thiago to cover for Pogba. I actually think Odegaard is an alternative to both VDB and Grealish. They will all be around the same price if Villa get relegated, which is around 40-50m.

Well if we could get Thiago too then yeah would only need Grealish, however all noises suggest he wants to join Klopp

In Germany? I thought they were?

It wasn’t during the lockdown period where nobody could leave home? Regardless I agree with you it is reckless and silly but it’s not the same as drink driving because you’re bored (he said he was bored btw)

I think Lingard isn’t as big a problem character wise as Jack. Lingard is immature but not reckless and aside from silly “banter” and pranks hasnt put anyone at risk.

Get Grealish, Donny and Sancho. Get rid of all the deadwood (Mata, Lingard, Pereira).

Matic (Fred/McT) - Pogba (Donny/McT)
Sancho (Greenwood/James) - Bruno (Grealish/Donny) - Rashford (Grealish/James)
Martial (Ighalo/Greenwood)

That's 30+ starts for all of Pogba, Donny, Bruno, Grealish, Sancho, Rashford, Greenwood and Martial.

We're starting the season a full month later than normal with next to no pre season. There will be games every 3 days for most of the season. We need all the depth we can get.

We simply have to get to a level where we can handle injuries/fatigue/rotation without needing to resort to liability players. If people haven't realised that by now then they need to quit watching football and find themselves a new hobby.

Just as well we have the option of putting nine players on the bench next season.

That's if the premier league vote on it as didn't think decision had been made either way yet.

Oh...thought I heard the final decision had been made. If not, then there's a few players that will be missing out on our weekly matchday squad, but it is what it is, I guess.

You might well be right but just can't recall anything being confirmed yet

I'm sure his game has faults and most obviously he's been playing in a position we don't need - but there's definitely something about him. He would absolutely improve the squad instantly, and be a huge upgrade on James/Lingard/Perreira/Mata.

If we can get him and still have budget for the right, we absolutely should.
If his purchase is made out to be the marquee signing of the summer...we're fxcked.

Has it been proven that he was drink driving??
I don't believe it has unless I'm mistaken?

He made a mistake, like Giggs, Like Cantona, like quite a few others.

I mean it's hardly Alonso level of mistake is it?!?

Played well last night, his run towards the end of the game shows his class.

So does that suggest we need Pogba cover more? In which case DVB is the better fit.

We have cover for pogba in fred and mct and i think ole will give them another year. I dont think either are good enough but they are considerably better than mata jesse and Andreas.

We cant fix every position at once.

Grealish and sancho fix the top end.

Then were crying out for a dm cb and midfield depth if mct and fred dont push on.

Ideally you could squeeze in a cb or dm this summer as well but with covid i dont think its possible.

I am confident we can get him & Sancho provided that the price won't have gone through the roof now they look to be staying up.

I suppose what I'm saying is that I hope he has an agreement with them that he can still leave once he has helped them avoid relegation.

As long as he is an upgrade on Lingard, Perriera, Mata, I am fine with it. Looks like he is definitely well above these three. We some players to strengthen our bench as well.

I get why everyone thinks he'll be cheaper if Villa go down as they'll be more desperate for the money but surely their PL safety should mean they don't need to command the same fee as if they were to go down? If you think about it he could actually cost more if Villa were relegated

Honestly, I thought Villa would get relegated and we'd sign him for somewhere in the region of £25million & a significant amount of add-ons rising to £35m+ overall. However, if Villa don't get relegated (which looks the more likely outcome at this moment in time), then I can see the total price being £40million or more if we or another team are to buy him. I still think the fee could surprise people (in that it will be lower than what was originally expected when this talk arose), but if Villa are still in the Premier League they'll definitely try to play a bit more hardball. It also depends if more than one team are interested and are willing to pay in excess of £30m for example.

Still, I'm not sure if we'll do this if Pogba signs a new contract soon. Grealish will be on the bench for most games as he has to displace Bruno/Pogba to get in the team, if he's happy to come and be a second choice option then that gives us excellent depth (even if I'm not his biggest fan by any stretch, I think I'd rather he play than Mata, Lingard, or Andreas for example). I just can't imagine him consistently getting in the England squad if he isn't starting the majority of games, so I think something like that is going to be a big decider on where he moves to, or if he even moves at all. Whilst this might sound a bit odd considering we're 5th and they're champions, I think Grealish would have more chance starting every week for Liverpool than he does at Man Utd currently. I'm he's going to any other team with Champion's League aspirations, but I suppose Spurs could resume interest, or Arsenal even if they were able to get reasonable money for Ozil. Chelsea & Man City are the definite no from the so-called big six, whilst I'm not fully sure if he'd consider Wolves/Everton.

Well in an ideal world I would like to sign Grealish this summer and VDB next however gut feeling is they both will be looking to leave in this window

Yeah we can't buy in every position that needs fixing this window so let's fix the ones that are really bad. Having no RW and having Lingard/Pereira as your AM backup are both worse than having Mctominay and Fred as your Pogba and Matic backups and are worse than having Maguire and Lindelof as your starting CBs

Apparently Sancho liked Grealish's instagram post about the game last night. Mind you they are going to be England team mates soon so get that.

That is what I am hoping is the case too

He was very close to signing for Spurs two seasons ago but Levy's brinksmanship and the Villa rake over ended with the ownders telling Levy to do one. Grealish was devastated but signed a new contract. He's given them two more seasons in which they've been promoted. If Grealish didn't have it written into his contract you'd expect a gentlemans agreement at least.

£25m + Lingard + Rojo should do the deal. Wages though, villa will be in trouble.

£40m would be a very good deal for him.

Anything above £50m and I don't think it's happening, we have Bruno and Rashford who would start in his positions so £50m+ for a squad option (a good one who'd play often though) isn't ideal.

We will see at the end of the season

Somehow I don't think signing Grealish would be the brightest thing to do. He has a fairly well documented volatile behaviour and we seem to have a very well knit group of players right now. Last thing we need is a disruptive personality.

Even keeping that aside, while he's a very good player but I don't see where he fits into the game we play, which is based on quick passing and inter play and moving the ball forward quickly. Grealish game is based on holding on to the ball, picking a pass and drawing fouls. In that sense, he's more of a city type player.

His lack of game time here would also be a concern, given that there is no obvious position where he could consistently play.

I'd rather we keep Fred and not buy Grealish. Besides, if we get Sancho, we could play him as an emergency no. 10 in the unlikely event that pogba and bruno are injured at the same time.

Much rather use the 50 odd million for CB.

Hes a spurs type player and that level IMO. I'd take him as a squad player but I doubt he would accept that. He's not as good as Bruno is and that would be the direct competition. Unless we replace Pogba with Grealish (not happening this summer) and push Bruno deeper.

If Villa stay up he will cost more than £45m and at that point I dont think its worth pursuing. You don't spend that kind of money on depth, you look for a solid serviceable player on a bargain who can do job like Ighalo.

I dont see how a backup for Fernandes/Pogba is a priority in any way when you consider that we need an upgrade at CB since all our current options are different degrees of mediocre, and Matic's successor/replacement because have no one else who can play his role. This is before even mentioning the gaping hole on our right wing.

The last thing this squad needs is yet another attacking midfielder.

Some Villa fans on their forum are quite bullish about him staying if they survive on Sunday, however others think he will go no matter what the result at West Ham

There is also the chain of thought that if Villa invest in some better quality around him & Luiz then maybe he could be persuaded to stay too.

So i presume you wouldn't want us to sign Van Der Beek either then if that's the case. Personally i think the drop off when Pogba & Bruno aren't there is huge.

I totally agree that we need to look for a Matic successor but expect we will scout players next season with a view to buying one next summer.

What happens when Pogba or Bruno get injured or need a rest?
